nathanaldensr··on A whole civilization might die tonight
The question isn't what must be done; look to the very founding of the United States for wisdom on that topic. The only question is, do people have the collective courage to do it?
nathanaldensr··on US deploying nearly all stealthy long-range JASSM-ER cruise missiles to Iran war
This is simply not true by most objective metrics... unless you don't like plastic and fertilizer?
nathanaldensr··on F-15E jet shot down over Iran
Yep. It's just a lie.
nathanaldensr··on Copilot edited an ad into my PR
It's gaslighting on a worldwide scale is what it is.
nathanaldensr··on Young Graduates Face the Grimmest Job Market in Years
Right. Whether it's absolutely true in an empirical sense almost doesn't matter. If enough people believe it's true--and I'd argue Gen Z absolutely does--it will become the reality. Whether it's a self-fulfilling prophecy or truth out of our control, it's the reality.
nathanaldensr··on I tried to prove I'm not AI. My aunt wasn't convinced
Agreed. The sphere of trust around each of us will shrink back to only those in our physical proximity. Outside of that, no one can be trusted.
nathanaldensr··on LaGuardia pilots raised safety alarms months before deadly runway crash
The FAA's problems are systemic and structural. They've existed long, long before the 2024 election.
nathanaldensr··on Cyberattack on vehicle breathalyzer company leaves drivers stranded in the US
LOL, exactly! The underlying problem is people's addiction to drugs, not all the symptoms that come from those addictions.
nathanaldensr··on Cyberattack on vehicle breathalyzer company leaves drivers stranded in the US
I have no idea why you'd been downvoted. Everything you said is common sense. I guess this is a case of "it's hard to get a man to understand something if his paycheck depends upon him not understanding it."
nathanaldensr··on Cyber.mil serving file downloads using TLS certificate which expired 3 days ago
Right. It's the same debate about how long authorization cookies or tokens should last. At one point in time--only one--authentication was performed in a provable enough manner that the certificate was issued. After that--it could be seconds, hours, days, years, or never--that assumption could become invalid.
nathanaldensr··on The Trillion Dollar Race to Automate Our Lives
The Rube Goldberg of the electronic world.
nathanaldensr··on Our commitment to Windows quality
"Our Commitment to Gaslighting Everyone with Corporate Marketing Language"
nathanaldensr··on Death to Scroll Fade
ZeroHedge is one of the worst offenders for this.
nathanaldensr··on 100 Jumps
For mobile, it might help if the developer had a clearly-indicated long-press circle somewhere near the block.
nathanaldensr··on Uber is letting women avoid male drivers and riders in the US
Idealism meeting reality.
nathanaldensr··on Uber is letting women avoid male drivers and riders in the US
Hardly a rant. You're just describing the "move fast and break things" ethic (or should I say unethic). Or said another way: "all of the convenience with none of the responsibility."
nathanaldensr··on Ask HN: Is HN becoming more toxic?
Lots of people of a certain ideological persuasion view it as their religious mission to invade spaces--all spaces--and force their ideological perspectives on everyone. To be sure, they're a very, very vocal minority, but you know what they say: "misery loves company."

I share your observations.

nathanaldensr··on Facebook is cooked
As someone with a Filipina wife and who's traveled many times to the Philippines, your characterization is exactly correct. Facebook is the option, not just one option.

Interesting side fact: The Philippines is #1 in social media usage in the world.

nathanaldensr··on History of AT&T Long Lines
There are some very cool videos on YouTube[1] showing what the insides of these bunkers looked like.

nathanaldensr··on Waymo exec reveals company uses remote workers in the Philippines
They are being exploited. I've traveled to Cebu City where many of these call centers are located. My wife is from the area. To Filipinos, it's a good job, but the quality of life for these workers is still very poor. It's not a living wage; most can't afford to live on their own.
nathanaldensr··on Man, 83, tricked by scammers, gets 21 years to life for killing Uber driver
Agreed. We (meaning the United States) used to have this for the most part. It doesn't scale to mediate all human interactions with authentication/authorization.
nathanaldensr··on Stop Using Face ID
Exactly! Biometrics have never been less secure than they are now. It's approaching Social Security number levels of insecure. LOL
nathanaldensr··on Stop Using Face ID
This is the advice I give to everyone who comes to me for digital security advice. I let them know that building habits of using lengthy PINs (my own personal PIN is far more than four or six digits) takes some time to get used to but makes them immune to device seizure followed by law enforcement-compelled or court-ordered biometric unlock (this is specific to US law).
nathanaldensr··on Ask HN: How realistically far are we from AGI?
To know "how far," you'd have to know the exact location of your destination. We don't know that; therefore, your question is not possible to answer.
nathanaldensr··on Ubisoft cancels six games including Prince of Persia and closes studios
I'm going to fire up Super Metroid on Snes9x later.
nathanaldensr··on Downtown Denver's office vacancy rate grows to 38.2%
I, for one, love my low-density agriculturally-rooted Massachusetts town founded in the eighteenth century.

Not everyone likes what you like.

nathanaldensr··on Downtown Denver's office vacancy rate grows to 38.2%
Oftentimes, the homeless themselves don't want to be fed or housed. In fact, they--especially the ones with mental health and/or addiction problems--often destroy public housing. Reality does not match the propaganda that all homeless are just down-on-their-luck unfortunate people who would otherwise fit into society.
nathanaldensr··on AI Usage Policy
The high-trust Boomer brain cannot comprehend the actual low-trust society of grifters in which we live.
nathanaldensr··on HPV vaccination reduces oncogenic HPV16/18 prevalence from 16% to <1% in Denmark
In high-trust societies these things work, yes. Not all societies are high-trust. Often, they once were high-trust but are no longer thanks to sociopathic, non-empathetic actors.
nathanaldensr··on CEOs to Keep Spending on AI, Despite Spotty Returns
If only we could stick that fork in the AI bubble and call it "done."
