natemcintosh··on Astral to Join OpenAI
Personally, I'd expect a few good years of stewardship, and then a decline in investment. I can only hope there are enough community members to keep things going by then.
natemcintosh··on GNU Texmacs
I used Texmacs all through my Master's degree. I loved it because it was excellent for quickly writing math, and building tables (I had to do this often). It would not have been excellent if I hadn't dedicated time to learning the keyboard shortcuts, but once I did, I could write math faster than writing it, and much faster than writing it in LaTeX. In timed take-home exams, I would just write the whole exam in texmacs because it was the fastest way for me to work.

To a lesser degree I also appreciated that the files have a similar feel to XML; I think it makes a lot of sense for this type of document.

I remember hearing about the macro system, but never looked into it. It sounded neat though.

When creating a technical document these days, I'd probably reach for typst though.

natemcintosh··on Kagi Assistants
As a Kagi subscriber, I find this to be mostly useful. I'd say I do about 50% standard Kagi searches, 50% Kagi assistant searches/conversations. This new ability to change the level of "research" performed can be genuinely useful in certain contexts. That said, I probably expect to use this new "research assistant" once or twice a month.
natemcintosh··on Servo v0.0.1
Tried it out on Linux. Worked better than I expected. Sites that are text heavy render well, and quickly. Sites with more "customization" sometimes struggled with rendering; stuff all over the place. Memory usage seemed a bit higher than Firefox with the same tabs, but not out of this world higher.

All in all, an impressive release.

natemcintosh··on Figure 03, our 3rd generation humanoid robot
I would love to have something like this for all the chores around my house. But I also have serious reservations about the increased level insight into my private home life this could provide to the manufacturer. Look at cases like the ring camera security violations [1]. A moving robot could be an order of magnitude more invasive of your privacy. If I were to purchase this, I would want serious privacy guarantees.

natemcintosh··on Open Source Maintenance Fee
I watched the video on the open source maintenance fee page (https://opensourcemaintenancefee.org/) and it explains that the fee is for 1) people/orgs who make revenue from the open source code AND 2) want to interact with the GitHub project (e.g. open issues). You can however 1) make revenue from the open source code, but not interact with the GitHub project without paying the fee.

For instance, if I'm an organization that wants to use this open source project for free, I can download and build the code, but not download a GitHub generated release binary.

natemcintosh··on Kelp – simple replacement for homebrew on macOS
Seems like this space is really heating up the last few weeks. The rust based tool sps[0] is also looking to fill this niche, though perhaps being much closer to brew's system.

natemcintosh··on Swiftly 1.0
I think this will be a big boost to the swift ecosystem. The ability to add and remove language versions as needed is so convenient, and I'm glad more and more languages are adding it.
natemcintosh··on TeX and Typst: Layout Models (2024)
This was a really great write-up, and gives me a lot of hope for the future of Typst. I think one of the best ways to overcome the enormous momentum of TeX is to point out its limitations (while still keeping an eye on Typst's limitations), and explain how Typst overcomes them.
natemcintosh··on The two factions of C++
And what about, for example, those government contractors who are in the same position as you: they have a large C++ codebase that currently works, and is too big to re-write in rust? Now they're being asked to make it safer. How will they do that with the "existing C++ process"?
natemcintosh··on Taskwarrior – CLI Task Management
Been using taskwarrior (and the really great TUI interface https://github.com/kdheepak/taskwarrior-tui) for about 6 months now. My favorite things:

- really fast day-to-day navigation using vim-like controls in the TUI

- automatic sorting using due date, task dependencies (A must be done for B to start), age, etc.

- task dependencies. This is really helpful for me

- decent enough cross-device sync with syncthing (I already had it up and running)

- ability to produce reports. E.g. what tasks did I complete for project X last month?

- whole system has a good set of hooks into it, making it relatively hackable

Downsides: - was slightly intimidating at first. If you're starting out, definitely start on the simple end, and slowly add complexity to your setup (creating tasks -> due dates -> using projects -> creating task dependencies -> using contexts for work/play/study -> ... -> ...)

natemcintosh··on Cosmic: A New Desktop Environment
So many negative takes here. Does it look perfect? No, it's an alpha. I think the most important thing is that it's built on a solid base that will allow it to grow into a really really great DE.
natemcintosh··on Zed on Linux Is Here
Tried the advice, but wasn't able to change behavior. Added a [comment](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/13552#issuecomm...) to an existing issue
natemcintosh··on Zed on Linux Is Here
Anyone else get ~60-70% CPU usage when moving the mouse around? And no GPU usage.
natemcintosh··on Students invent quieter leaf blower
Yes, these mechanical engineering senior design projects at JHU are all sponsored by some organization or another, and the sponsor gets to keep the end product (and in this case also patent pending). Source: did a mechanical engineering senior design project at JHU 6 years ago (though mine was less successful, haha)
natemcintosh··on Meta AI
Can't get the page to load anything on firefox. Seems to work fine on Safari and Chrome
natemcintosh··on Responses to unicycling
As someone who once rode a unicycle (also in the North East of England), I can say that I received almost exactly the same responses listed here.
natemcintosh··on The case for Nushell
I love using nushell, and I hope it becomes a standard going forward. I do sometimes feel slightly annoyed that I have to type out a bit more in nushell, as opposed to simply tacking on another flag, but I think JT makes a really great case for doing just that. In terms of adoption, JT asks:

1. Is Nushell compelling enough for a single person to adopt it? 2. Would adopting Nushell broadly as a community move the needle?

I'm 100% on board with nushell in my personal computing. But I'm still worried about number 2. I think something like rust was able to succeed because enough people really felt like there a need for something to fill that space. Do enough people feel like nushell fills a necessary gap? I hope so.

natemcintosh··on I raced a homing pigeon against the Internet [video]
At my previous job we had to get data off a ship after a test. The upload rate off the ship was slow. The solution was to put the data on drives, put them in a helicopter, and fly them to land.
natemcintosh··on Show HN: I made a SQL game to help people learn / challenge their skills
FYI, in the learning mission, it often asks something like "Get all of the columns from the "pods_list" table where status is 'functioning', and range is more than 1500."

I think it really means "Get all of the rows from ..."

natemcintosh··on Post-processing is ruining iPhone photos
Having watched the MKBHD video in question (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=88kd9tVwkH8), I believe he's actually saying that iPhones light people's faces up uniformly, even when light is coming distinctly from one side. Most of the time, it's a pleasing look, but sometimes it doesn't look all that great. Apple went for "it looks better on average". And I think that's exactly what most people want out of the default camera app on their iPhone. If you want more control, there are some really great full manual control apps out there, e.g. Halide

natemcintosh··on Sile: A Modern Rewrite of TeX
I've been using texmacs for a little over year now, and have loved it. For me, the nicest part is much simpler creation and editing of tables and aligned math. I also appreciate the image insertion; in LaTeX my images often end up not quite where I want them (I know, you can specify "here" for your images, but I'd prefer if they were just "there" to start with). Of course, depending on your use case, your mileage may vary.

natemcintosh··on Super-Structured Data: Rethinking the Schema
So it sounds like one of the advantages of the Zed ecosystem is that its data can go into three file formats (zson, zng, zst), each designed for a specific use case, and convert between them easily and without loss.

And it seems like the newer "zed lake" format is like a large blob managed by a server. Can you also convert data to and from and the file formats to the lake format? What is the lake's main use case?

natemcintosh··on Hubris – A small operating system for deeply-embedded computer systems
So for a new OS like this, how does one compile their program for it?
natemcintosh··on SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket will launch NASA's Europa Clipper to icy Jupiter moon
We might, and we are (just not Jupiter's moons)! The Dragonfly mission (https://dragonfly.jhuapl.edu), will launch in 2027 and arrive at Saturn's moon Titan in 2036.

Dragonfly is a nuclear powered octo-copter, that will fly autonomously on the moon. Titan's small gravitational field and dense atmosphere (about 1.45x Earth's atmospheric pressure) make it one of the best places in the Solar System for flight. The general flight plan is to charge up batteries with the MMRTG (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multi-mission_radioisotope_the...), take off, scout a new potential landing area, land in a previously scouted landing area. On one battery charge, it will be able to fly up to 10km, and stay aloft for up to 30 minutes. Dragonfly will carry out scientific sampling both on the ground and in the air.

To quote Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dragonfly_(spacecraft)) about why Titan is an interesting spot for science:

> Titan is similar to the very early Earth, and can provide clues to how life may have arisen on Earth. In 2005, the European Space Agency's Huygens lander acquired some atmospheric and surface measurements on Titan, detecting tholins,[29] which are a mix of various types of hydrocarbons (organic compounds) in the atmosphere and on the surface.[30][31] Because Titan's atmosphere obscures the surface at many wavelengths, the specific compositions of solid hydrocarbon materials on Titan's surface remain essentially unknown.[32] Measuring the compositions of materials in different geologic settings will reveal how far prebiotic chemistry has progressed in environments that provide known key ingredients for life, such as pyrimidines (bases used to encode information in DNA) and amino acids, the building blocks of proteins.[33]

> Areas of particular interest are sites where extraterrestrial liquid water in impact melt or potential cryovolcanic flows may have interacted with the abundant organic compounds. Dragonfly will provide the capability to explore diverse locations to characterize the habitability of Titan's environment, investigate how far prebiotic chemistry has progressed, and search for biosignatures indicative of life based on water as solvent and even hypothetical types of biochemistry.[6]

> The atmosphere contains plentiful nitrogen and methane, and strong evidence indicates that liquid methane exists on the surface. Evidence also indicates the presence of liquid water and ammonia under the surface, which may be delivered to the surface by cryovolcanic activity.

natemcintosh··on Arabian Nights
I would highly recommend the musical interpretation by Rimsky-Korsakov (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scheherazade_(Rimsky-Korsakov). The violin soloist as Scheherazade leads the Sultan through the stories. See the Overview section of the wikipedia page for her theme, and his theme. It's a piece I always love to come back to.
natemcintosh··on Show HN: Play with Shaders Inspired by Slime Mold
Like you, I also loved Sebastian Lague's video on slime mold. Would you suggest starting on a CPU based version if I have no knowledge of shaders?
