nasso_dev··on Ask HN: What's your opinion on automatic light/dark mode switching on websites?
I strongly believe it should be the default everywhere.

IMO, you can even skip having a theme switch—that's how native stock OS apps behave (calculator, notepad, settings, etc.).

For websites, I think that should be enough. For web apps however, you might want more control over the theme somewhere in the settings page, as people are more likely to spend a lot of time in your app and may want to customize it a bit more.

nasso_dev··on I Switched to Firefox and Never Looked Back
The browser doesn't need to support WebGL?! Together with Web Audio and Web Assembly, they are exactly the kind of technologies allowing desktop-class apps like Figma to run in the trustworthy browser sandbox.

I don't want to have to install more apps, and more web APIs means more things can be done inside of the browser shell without having to install software that could literally do anything on your computer (and is often hard to remove completely when you're done).

Despite HTMX being backend-agnostic, I heard it pairs extremely well with Django, so that's probably why! Maybe the two are particularly well fitting pieces of the web dev puzzle.
nasso_dev··on The Engagement Is Better on Bluesky
A major difference with Bluesky tho, is that users can choose their own "algorithm". Nobody is forced on Discover (Bluesky's "for you" algorithm).

I wonder if this will play a role.

nasso_dev··on Bluesky says it won't train AI on your posts
for the record: Dorsey has nothing to do with Bluesky today (he even hates it now)

have you considered that perhaps you're not the target? perhaps your problems are just better solved with different languages and that's okay?

nasso_dev··on Steve's Jujutsu Tutorial
Actually, `jj git push` will only push named branches, which are now called "bookmarks".

You simply don't attach a bookmark to @, and `jj git push` will NEVER push it (to what branch would it push?)

The branch you're working on is instead on @-. So when you squash, it updates the branch.

nasso_dev··on Whence '\n'?
> This post was inspired by another post about exactly the same thing. I couldn't find it when I looked for it, so I wrote this. All credit to the original author for noticing how interesting this rabbit hole is.

I think the author may be thinking of Ken Thompson's Turing Award lecture "Reflections on Trusting Trust".

oh. that's an OLD old tool..

nasso_dev··on I'm forking Ladybird and stepping down as SerenityOS BDFL
my understanding is that serenity will focus less on the web browser in the first place. it might just go back to being a simple html viewer with rudimentary js support?

my hope is that they take this as an opportunity to come up with a purpose built "web" stack for serenity? use it as an excuse to reinvent the web and "fix" the mistakes that were made? maybe by actually Putting Scheme In The Browser rather than js?

nasso_dev··on Linux When?
wgpu (and webgpu more generally) is often presented as a very good choice for a cross platform low level graphics api. but it was designed around safety/security constraints to support the web, sometimes at the cost of performance (my understanding)

i heard somewhere this nice example: only big actors like AAA game engines would really benefit from the extra development effort it would take to use an even lower level api like vulkan/dx12 to squeeze the last 10% of performance that wgpu can't get you

so if i understand correctly, zed, just like a AAA game engine, wants to squeeze every last bit of performance from the gpu, and so wgpu is "too high level" for it? and blade is "like wgpu, but no design tradeoffs and lower level" so its a better fit? does that mean someday zed might reach for vulkan directly one day? im assuming dx12 is gonna be used on windows anyway?

i love kvark's work btw, we need more kvarks

you can speedrun by playing with the phone screen facing down. tilt it slightly and the ball will go super fast. you can sort of "fly", too, and climb up walls. i got to level 9 in like 30 secs like this
nasso_dev··on One UX researcher ignited changes to how the company (YouTube) built product
i tend to forget what the youtube home page even looks like. years ago i bookmarked the subscription feed rather than the "home page". never looked back. thats what it should be!
nasso_dev··on I'm Peter Roberts, immigration attorney who does work for YC and startups. AMA
Hey Peter! How can a YC startup be founded in the US if none of the co-founders are US citizens? Does it mean after their batch they need to leave the country? Or are they allowed to stay in the US by the "$100k investment rule"?
nasso_dev··on 3D + 2D: Testing out my cross-platform WASM graphics engine

nasso_dev··on Building a dynamic Canvas rendering engine using JSX
very interesting... i am literally in the middle of building my own canvas rendering engine so this article really made me excited

it saddens me a bit that the author doesn't talk about the performance of their implementation... one of the great benefits of using canvas to render ui is that you are able to render far more elements than using the dom with a much smaller memory footprint

im curious to know more about their rendering strategy... does it just redraw everything at 60hz or do they have a smarter way to trigger redraws? do they always redraw the entire canvas or do they somehow only redraw updated regions?

nasso_dev··on How we engineer feedback at Figma with eng crits
> We’ve been thinking a lot as a team about how to bring AI into Figma and FigJam

i hate how we're not even hiding the fact that we're just looking for excuses to use AI everywhere at this point...

do Figma and FigJam really need AI to solve their problems?? can't the AI use-cases in Figma/FigJam be implemented as plugins? is it okay to not use AI in 2024?

nasso_dev··on Documentation for the JSON Lines text file format
im guessing: all values must always end with a terminator, but a separator doesn't need to be present after the last value

i.e. a documemt without a newline at the end is valid jsonl, but invalid ndjson

nasso_dev··on Web apps are better than no apps
maybe wasm+wasi(x) would allow us to build an open "app store" platform or a sort of package manager for desktop apps?

it could provide a cross platform, sandboxed alternative to Shipping Chromium, while still supporting web technologies to build the GUI (powered by the system's native web view?)

i dont like having a centralized platform but i guess we could establish a standard file format (like .deb or AppImage?) or have a federated platform? i really know very little about all this though...
