nashashmi··on GPT-6 Astra has gained the ability to drive a car
I wonder if the companies would be willing to bet entirely on AI driven innovation if liability for misalignment was put squarely on companies, individuals, compute vendors, and LLM vendors. I don’t think they would opt for it, especially if an alternative option to use human-programmed tech was already available.

There is something to be said about emphasizing on liability as a way to freeze or solidify AI Development. Right now it is too unfettered leading to predictions of AI dooms.

nashashmi··on Pentagon says overreliance on AI contributed to missile strike on Iran school
US classifies military age at 16, not 14. You can join the US army at 16. But you cant be sent to war. No. That is different than Israel.
nashashmi··on I built the fastest PHP webserver in the world
They are asking about why would you need an alternate system? What is the technical reason behind it? What’s the disadvantage in the current system? All while acknowledging that they used to work in PHP and haven’t recently so they understand a lot less.

nashashmi··on iPhone Duo
Surface Neo came out in android form called surface duo. It had the amazing hinge that somehow locked in place when rotated just the right way. I think The windows version never came out because MS couldn’t commit to this form factor
nashashmi··on iPhone Duo
Compare those to an ipad+phone+macbook. For a $2k price. What does this duo offer over the alternative?

Does it have extended desktop support for a docking station???

nashashmi··on I resigned from Anthropic today
Nukes have difficult maintenance and deployments. AI is is readily available software and hardware. That makes this far more accessible than nukes.

The fear is that developing AI at full speed will lead to giving people the ability to do incredible harm. Like something worse than a machine gun.

nashashmi··on I resigned from Anthropic today
The tweets justify his position that this is bigger than nukes. Nukes still have the problem of production and deployment. This is just software.

He is blowing the whistle on how reckless we are at furthering the tech. There is no second thought at maybe development of this tech is not a good idea. Its just full speed ahead.

nashashmi··on Florida revokes permits for license plate readers on state highways
The fact that it is private data, they could have made this openly accessible
nashashmi··on Florida revokes permits for license plate readers on state highways
I am thinking that Palantir has fully established tech and AI systems to be weapons of harm. All tech companies should now be seen as private defense contractors.

We are sleeping here

nashashmi··on Florida revokes permits for license plate readers on state highways
What would proper governance of a powerful flock like tool be? It is a public private partnership. Public benefit. Public infrastructure. Private collection. Private software. Private computing. Private access.

Private power.

nashashmi··on Paint.net 5.2 alpha now runs on Linux
I'd reverse the question and ask is there any reason to continue developing in .NET and windows-only languages when windows allows for WSL apps.
nashashmi··on Paint.net 5.2 alpha now runs on Linux
I wonder if we will ever get AI-optimized language sets, ie code instructions given specifically to AI agents to develop code for a JIT interpreter. This gives the same results each and every time the instruction to AI is given no matter the version of LLM used.
nashashmi··on Paint.net 5.2 alpha now runs on Linux
Paint.net used to be an open source collaboration project by Rick Brewster, a Microsoft Employee and the students at the University of Washington. Today it is a private closed source project accepting donations, and still headed by Rick Brewster.
nashashmi··on Playa Phone
The FSM is a fetish attempt to mock some of the world’s largest religions. One day I hope to see the FSM come to be the exact mockery of the people who made it, ie the ones who take somethings in life so damn seriously that they make it something they serve and worship, and then ask it to help them back.

nashashmi··on SK Hynix CEO sees memory chip shortage lasting until 2030
Given the possibility of setting up new memory fab plants takes 10 years, given that data companies are spending money on power plants based on power consumption forecasts, but are not spending on memory fab plants, I take it that data companies are seeing the current memory makers as sufficient for their needs.

Meaning if the avg consumer is going to buy memory, they are going to have to fork a whole lot more money than they did before, because they will be paying the price of profit generating data companies.

The next phase of improvements will have to be in consumer software to be more memory efficient. Gone are the days of electron apps and other memory intensive systems of programming./

nashashmi··on GUIs should be fully keyboard-driven
Yes the search feature plus using tabs and spaces bring about accessibility. Frequently it misses the underline letter , alt keyboard shortcut.
nashashmi··on GUIs should be fully keyboard-driven
Somehow that is a bigger insult: reducing a desktop to act like an iPhone.
nashashmi··on GUIs should be fully keyboard-driven
> Windows components however, especially old ones, are incredibly accessible

Bing, Bing, Bing! I came here to vent how the new windows 10 and windows 11 interfaces (made by Mac enthusiasts, ughh) have omitted keyboard accessibility for a cleaner look. They also dropped drag and drop support (which I never knew about in windows 7) and I completely missed how useful it could be on Windows 10/11.

nashashmi··on GUIs should be fully keyboard-driven
You would be baffled to know that after the creation of the mouse, Steve Jobs wanted to remove the arrow keys so developers would be forced to create mouse only interfaces.
nashashmi··on 11,000-year-old sculpture of man riding a leopard found in Turkey
nitpicking: Sumerians were the oldest civilization to have been found using cuneiform or scripted writing. The actual civilization to have truly invented writing is not known.

Micro-regressions will largely be in the realm of charity and hospitality as society has aggressively embodied capitalism's cost and benefit analysis.
nashashmi··on Early-life stress leaves a 'scar' inside brain cells in mice
You missed the point. Israel banks on making Gaza look like the enemy, seeks reasons to seek war, and bets on a hostile takeover of Gaza and expulsion of the people.

At this point, Hamas’s stories are meant to feed Israel’s hunger for annihilating Gaza. No stories of dictatorship or instigation or terrorism or hostage taking or can even measure back to the violent nature of Israel. It’s not Israel “is no angel”, but Israel is this earth’s worst demon who is trying to delegitimize the Palestinians, and you are their allied propagator.

nashashmi··on Felony charges for citizen deleting phone data at US Border
Once police open an investigation or once there is a lawsuit served, destroying evidence relevant to that lawsuit is illegal.

The question here is whether the police were in investigation mode. I believe it is an overreach to claim that everybody at a border was going through an investigation. And it is also a overreach that everyone who is selected for search at the border is under investigation.

nashashmi··on A 25-year-old video patent just expired, ending a legal headache for Linux
I remember DivX fondly. Even on dialup, picture quality was just phenomenal. Web tv watching was actually doable after this
