narrowtux··on ASK HN: Does Apple store the facerecognition images on their platform?
For unlocking, the data will be stored on the Phone's secure enclave which is locked with your passcode. They say they won't upload it to their servers (which you have to trust them on, because it's hard to see if they do it).

However, there's an API for this tech as well and apps could abuse it. I bet they'll introduce a permission request for this though.

narrowtux··on Hack – A typeface designed for source code
Not even readable on a 15" laptop screen.
narrowtux··on Hackers send silent commands to speech recognition systems with ultrasound
The speakers would have to be able to emit ultrasonic waves. I'm pretty sure that you need special hardware for this. (because the researchers themselves used a special ultrasonic emitter, not the speaker of the phone they used).
narrowtux··on Show HN: Make Medium Readable Again
Hackernews has a few CSS rules that optimize the site for mobile. For example the page is full-width on mobile instead of 85% width on desktop.

Also, the layout of the site is just rows which makes it easy to translate to a mobile device.

narrowtux··on What makes a good REPL?
You could just store your modified state to new variables though
narrowtux··on SoundCloud faces do-or-die vote by investors
What irked me about that one was that the UX being a mess can't possibly be only caused by the layoff woes 2 weeks ago.
narrowtux··on Show HN: Twitch Plays Doom
Mixer also has the possibility to add buttons directly to the stream, so viewers can use WASD and stuff on their actual keyboards.

Key card* (?)
narrowtux··on Tesla Model 3 First Drive Review
I drive a Mini Cooper from time to time and it's not great. They have a small screen behind the wheel which also displays the speed, but with a low refresh rate so you can go over the limit easily if you don't pay attention.
narrowtux··on Microsoft Paint to be killed off after 32 years
Also no drag-and-drop
narrowtux··on LeoCAD – A CAD program for creating virtual Lego models
I just got a VR and I'd pay for this!
narrowtux··on Ask HN: What business service would you pay $100/mo for
Very good pay though. It's like a job.
narrowtux··on Taking control of all .io domains with a targeted registration
I'm 25 and had to zoom to read and even then it wasn't comfortable. (not the OP)
narrowtux··on It is as if you were doing work
Just like real life. I am sure this is intentional.
narrowtux··on Tesla's Long-Awaited, Lower-Priced Model 3 to Arrive Friday
True, because it takes long to actually get to that speed.

But imagine if you'd like to drive 160 km/h on the highway all the time, you probably need a car that has a rated top speed of at least 180 km/h.

narrowtux··on Tesla's Long-Awaited, Lower-Priced Model 3 to Arrive Friday
I do live in Germany, and it is a concern for me.

The VW e-up costs 22k EUR and has a top speed of 130 km/h, the BMW i3 full electric version w/o range extender costs about 35k EUR and has a top speed of 150 km/h.

This performance would be fine if I bought a car under 10k EUR but not for this price.

narrowtux··on Differentiating laptops: How about a decent keyboard? (2015)
They made the new trackpad so big that the gap between it and the spacebar shrunk to something like 3 mm. I used to rest my thumbs on that gap and I can't any more. Took a fair bit of time getting used to it.

Same with not being able to rest your fingers on the touch bar.

narrowtux··on Ask HN: What business service would you pay $100/mo for
pilot.co/x - you'll get projects that pay well and go for 3-6 months
narrowtux··on #c0ffee is the color
I found it easier to view after I added `border: 10px solid #111;` to the `.flexer` class
narrowtux··on Fireflies
If the fireflies take that time in their clocks to "charge the light", could it be that when they nudge their clock once or more in the cycle, the intensity of the light is a bit lower than it would normally be?
narrowtux··on Consider a Dell Optiplex FX160 Instead of a Raspberry Pi
Did the same thing, used an old Dell Optiplex Mini tower, put some WD Reds inside -> Now I have a nice NAS with Plex.
narrowtux··on How to shoot on iPhone 7
Portrait mode is a feature that uses the dual-camera in the iPhone 7 Plus.

EDIT: Everything else in that guide should work on the normal iPhone 7. Most of the guides work with older iPhones too.

narrowtux··on A faster BBC News front page
Maybe they just like to code with a component based framework, but don't actually need dynamic components.

That means it would just be a different way to use templates on the server side.

narrowtux··on Introducing paid subscriptions on GitLab.com
Per worker? That seems bad, yes.
narrowtux··on Introducing paid subscriptions on GitLab.com
This sounds like you threw in a few buzzwords. Why would a CI runner DDoS their database? How would WebSockets help them scale?
narrowtux··on Electron is flash for the desktop (2016)
Probably because Qt apps don't feel like native macOS apps.
narrowtux··on Scrolling on the web: A primer
IMHO this is only needed if the scrolling is not smooth like on mobile or macOS.
