narrowtux··on WhatsApp Down in Some Regions
Any day now they will find out which company is behind all three apps.
narrowtux··on We Don’t Use Docker
In my experience, developers then still have to implement a lot of behaviour to deal with docker's limitations around networking. (in my case it was trying to connect multiple BEAMs in a docker network)
narrowtux··on How I built a keyboard/video/mouse switch for my two 4k monitors
I had the same problem, and one of my displays is insanely picky when it comes to switching sources. It seems like it will only attempt a handshake once, and when the source is not ready for it, it will switch back.

I bought HDMI/DisplayPort switches which are capable of 4k60 and are very cheap. Only these combined KVMs have outrageous prices, but if you're fine with using multiple switches it can be achieved quite cheaply.

The software on modern displays is often abysmal, with the exception of Dell's in my experience.
narrowtux··on Why Johnny Won't Upgrade
I'm not holding my breath about the TV use-case of 5G. The ISPs will just make it too expensive to allow you to watch as much TV as you like.
narrowtux··on Coronavirus: Germany puts on crowded concerts to study risks
Tell me how that's a scientific trial of huge masses of people coming together?
narrowtux··on Coronavirus: Germany puts on crowded concerts to study risks
Source?
narrowtux··on How to use math input in GIMP
If you want a feature like this in elixir, I've made a library for that: https://github.com/narrowtux/abacus
narrowtux··on Riot is now Element
haha of course not, but that was essentially their argument for the denial.
narrowtux··on Riot is now Element
We tried to trademark Element and another generic abbreviation as a combined name and even that was not possible. The german trademark bureau just sent us printed wikipedia articles of both words as "proof" that it's not possible.
narrowtux··on Think Lazy – Open Letter to Apple Safari Team
Calling anything anybody spent a huge portion of their time on "lazy" and not expecting them to take it personally just shows a lack of empathy.
narrowtux··on Wireless Is a Trap
Yes, phones delay video playback so it matches the reported latency of the audio device. This works via networked audio protocols as well, at least on Apple devices in my experience.
narrowtux··on A Facebook crawler was making 7M requests per day to my stupid website
If their client asks for gzip compression of the http traffic, you could do it.
narrowtux··on eBay is port scanning visitors to their website
Yes, false sense of security hits the nail on the head.

Fits right there with unnecessary password rules too.

narrowtux··on eBay is port scanning visitors to their website
As a developer on a product that uses websocket extensively, I'm afraid that this will lead to the already huge distrust in the technology.

If IT admins get wind of this they'll just block it (or never unblock it since it's been blocked by some from day 1) and our product gets degraded experience.

narrowtux··on Belgian man has been receiving pizzas he never ordered for years
At some places, you can just order them w/o creditcard data and pay with cash when they're at your door.

A person using this to harass someone will certainly not use their own money to do it.

narrowtux··on iMessage for Windows: A labor of love that will never see light of day (2018)
Common use cases include car dashboards that read your SMS out loud and smartwatches.
narrowtux··on Seven years later, I bought a new MacBook. For the first time, I don't love it
Yes, but that doesn't include the ground pin.
narrowtux··on Seven years later, I bought a new MacBook. For the first time, I don't love it
Any clue if there's a version for german plugs with ground pins (schutzkontaktstecker) for the duckhead? I like not having an additional cable going from the AC to the outlet, but not having the computer connected to ground means that there are some problems, including static noise on headphones, and this "rubbing" sensation.
narrowtux··on Lidl to Launch Rival to AWS
No, this site is really fringe, I think nobody here was on this site before. I expect higher levels of quality from reputable news sources.
narrowtux··on An Update on the Status of Our UX Design Program
If I'm skimming this correctly, it's only suspended until they've addressed these issues.
narrowtux··on Researchers create focus-free camera with new flat lens
Interesting thought, if cameras (and generally optics) wouldn't have bokeh, our eyes wouldn't have to focus either and wouldn't have bokeh in unfocussed areas as well.

In that case, we truly woulnd't miss it.

narrowtux··on Researchers create focus-free camera with new flat lens
Hyperfocal focus distance can be achieved with lower focus distances than infinity, see this table: https://www.photopills.com/calculators/hyperfocal-table

It depends on the focal length, the chosen aperture, and to some extent on the resolution of the camera.

What I want to say is, if these new lenses transmit light at a high rate (let's say 1:2.8) while being hyperfocal from 0 mm to infinity all the time, you could take pictures at night more easily without having to focus or stop down to get larger scenes fully in focus.

Thus being actually useful in traditional photography.

Landscape photography could be another application.

narrowtux··on Researchers create focus-free camera with new flat lens
I'd be interested if this lens would transmit more light than a traditional lens stopped down to f/13 and focussed to hyperfocal distance. If that's the case, it could find application in photography for low-light photography.
narrowtux··on Sonos is getting rid of its controversial “recycle mode”
It can literally be any other speaker or amp with an aux port.
narrowtux··on Ask HN: What are good solo developer blogs that you enjoy reading?
Very good articles about Elixir and Erlang

narrowtux··on 13.3" full color ePaper display
This looks like it will only animate the scrolling when clicking on anchor links? Doesn't seem that bad to me.
narrowtux··on Slack’s new WYSIWYG input box is terrible
Yeah, seems this was fixed pretty quickly by not parsing the ` immediately but only after you've entered the closing `
narrowtux··on Apple warns of risks from German law to open up mobile payments
> 10% per payment

that'd be ludicrous. I found a source that says 0.15% which is way more reasonable: https://www.macrumors.com/2014/09/12/more-apple-pay-details/

narrowtux··on We Stood Up to a Patent Troll and Won
Why not skip the middle man? Just patent patenting.
