nappy-doo··on Meta and Google are cutting staff
Not really. Meta raised 10B (really their first debt ever) in April 2022, and GOOG has like 14B in debt. Google could pay that with less than a quarter's worth of earnings, and I think Meta's not far behind.

IMO, the market is overreacting. Both companies look pretty cheap to me.

nappy-doo··on New Webb image captures clearest view of Neptune’s rings in decades
No. It's very hard to go fast, and to get to Neptune, you need to burn a lot of fuel to get there. Getting home needs a whole lot more fuel too. Space travel is hard. You can go with lower energy transfer orbits, and wait forever to get there, or you can go high-speed and carry a ton of fuel with you.
nappy-doo··on Go Developer Survey 2022 Q2 Results
I don't understand. You're upset that Go's documentation from 2014 is adequate, and that the language hasn't changed to make it obsolete?
nappy-doo··on US has lost at least three nuclear bombs that have never been located
I came to recommend this book as well. The book is simultaneously fascinating and terrifying.
nappy-doo··on Bitcoin Falls Below $20k for the First Time Since 2020
You're writing OP, an almost perfect put. Although I have no interest in BTC, and would never take someone up on a bet like this, there's almost no upside on this bet for you.
nappy-doo··on Bitcoin Falls Below $20k for the First Time Since 2020
The arbitrary signposts are because the only way to look at Bitcoin is with technical analysis and looking at the graph. There are no earnings releases, press releases, or business conditions to discuss. We can only look at the price, and speculate. (NB: speculate, not invest.)
nappy-doo··on 37% of jobs in the United States can be performed entirely at home
You're asking someone to respect your choice to work from an office, while it feels like you're disparaging their choice to live where they want to (or possibly can afford as, for example, most of the suburbs have become cheaper than cities for much of America.)

Can we all just agree that people want different things?

nappy-doo··on Big tech makes a big bet: Offices are still the future
I wouldn't take the opposite side of Google's bet. They're spending a couple of billion on the bet. GOOG, AAPL, FB, that's about a week's worth of earnings to them. And if they're wrong, they have a depreciable asset that they can spend the next 30 years writing down. NBD.
nappy-doo··on Investors bought a record share of U.S. homes in 2021
Uh, and demographics.
nappy-doo··on Go performance from version 1.2 to 1.18
We published a 5% win, but it was really closer to 10% (for amd64). We were conservative in our marketing. The arm64 register ABI (which will be in 1.18 [March]), is showing performance improvements of over ≥ 15. (Rob Pike saw 20% on some of his stuff.)
nappy-doo··on Meta shares drop 20% on Q4 earnings miss, weak outlook
The vitriol on HN for FB is something else.

The earnings for this company are truly staggering. They made 11$/user. Their earnings were up 34% year-over-year – on a base of 29B dollars. They made 10B more this year than they did last year, and the comments in here are all about, "boy Apple fucked them, and Meta suxor!"

You people are nuts.

While I don't love FB as an entity, as a business they are making fucking bank. They are running a printing press, and the world is eating it up. Y'all need to switch to decaf or something. Their numbers are truly staggering.

nappy-doo··on Ask HN: Who wants to be hired? (February 2022)
Location: Boston, MA.

Remote: yes, please.

Willing to relocate: no, or depending on the opportunity.

Technologies: management, leadership, Go/Golang, C, C++, Python if needed, various assembly. Also have hardware experience, circuit design, signal processing/DSP, control, and embedded systems.

Résumé/CV: upon request

I care passionately about building the right team, and the right product.

I've been at FAANGs for approximately 14 years now, and am looking for a change. I've been a TL, manager, and individual contributor. I currently manage an /extremely/ senior team of engineers at a FAANG working on cloud technologies and computer languages. In the past year, products I've managed have delivered hundreds of millions of dollars in savings to my company, and others in the cloud space. Would consider almost any role, depending on the product space, responsibilities, compensation, and team; but, it's more likely to attract my attention and serve you best if you're hiring for senior leadership or management.

nappy-doo··on [dead]
I am a largely disinterested outsider, but I have yet to see any documentation and examples of misbehavior. (This isn't to say they aren't there, just that I don't follow Rust intimately.) The recent banning of a Go contributor, and the ensuing discussion on HN and reddit was illustrative of showing behavior, showing instances where people asked them to correct behavior, and finally their suspension, I feel will correct behavior.

I've been a SWE, SWE manager, TL at FAANGs for a number of years (>13). I've been in the industry for > 20 years. I've run the gamut on work from compilers to mobile to ML to signal processing to embedded RTOS development.

I'm looking to move to a lower stress lifestyle, ideally remote part-time Golang work. I am happy to consider other roles, but want a smart team looking to offload some crunchy work. I work fine independently and remotely.

nappy-doo··on Is going to the office a broken way of working?
How much of this is fixable though if you could have a normal social calendar? I don't think current circumstances offer a fair comparison.
nappy-doo··on Allbirds S-1 IPO
EBITDA in a non-comparison context is meaningless. EBITDA is only useful when you're comparing ownership of two like businesses.

What is interest, if not an expense? What is tax, if not an expense? What is depreciation if not an expense? Alright, amortization, yeah, that one could get added back in – I buy that.

Whenever someone starts talking about EBITDA, check your wallet.

nappy-doo··on Go 1.17 Release Notes
Important note: it's the preview release. Not everything will be done, there will be gaps. But the first parts of the work have already merged to master, and it's coming.
nappy-doo··on Go 1.17 Release Notes
The merge has already happened. The generic preview is going to be in 1.18 (early 2022).
nappy-doo··on The death of the ‘Millionaire Next Door’ dream
Probably because people want to spend what they make. If you live in SV, you see people driving Teslas, and you think, "I want to do that too." So, next time you fly first class for the family vacation, and stay at the pricey villa. On your next trip, you add a couple of private tours, and can't find a good return flight, so you buy some NetJets credits. Next thing you know, you're spending 65k/year for a nanny (to support those high-paying Google T6 jobs), and it's eating into the 200k/year savings it would take to reach that level of wealth.

Most people end up spending close to what they make. Most people don't save like what 100M would require you to save.

nappy-doo··on Go 1.17 Beta
Just buried in the middle of the release notes: Oh, your code's 5% faster.
nappy-doo··on Tech Interviews Are Stupid
Ok, go ahead. Ask me a question. I've done > 400 interviews at FAANG companies, so I guess I'm due.
nappy-doo··on Ask HN: Favorite purchases of last two years?
I bought a Prusa MK3s during lockdown (don't think I'll do the upgrade to the +, doesn't seem much changed), it is amazing. I've never owned a 3D printer before, and it was painless to put together, took about 1 hour to tune and fix one assembly glitch. It's sitting right next to me printing right now.

The other thing I bought myself was an M1 mac. I just got frustrated with cleaning my butterfly keyboard again, and just said, "fuck it, I'm buying one". It is an amazing machine. Battery for days, nice, light. It's probably my favorite computer ever (well, after my first – an Apple //e).

nappy-doo··on Tesla Makes More Money Trading Bitcoin Than Selling Cars
I think that's because Wall Street believes it when a company does that much more revenue.
nappy-doo··on LSD, cargo shorts and the fall of a tech CEO
While I support medicare for all, there needs to be a transition. There are probably hundreds of thousands of people involved in insurance that need to find new work.
nappy-doo··on Ex-Netflix VP found guilty of awarding tech contracts in exchange for bribes
probably because it worked so well last time.
