nanna··on Shenmue (1999) reverse engineering reveals possible sun position oversight
Shenmue I and II will stay with me forever. I waited and waited for Shenmue III, and swore that when it came out I would buy whatever it took to play it, but the reviews were so poor that I haven't even tried it. Is it worth it?
nanna··on Ecosia is teaming up with Qwant to build a European search index
Hi Andreas, the Firefox 'start install' link is broken ("Hoppla! Wir können diese Seite nicht finden.")

https://good-search.org/about/en/set-up-good/

Also, while I have your attention, something that I would miss from DDG are the bang commands, which make DDG much better than Google, for me personally. Does GOOD have something similar?

nanna··on US Ends Support For Ukrainian F-16s
I think this is overly optimistic. Countries around the world can't build strategies around the US that will only hold when the Democrats are in power. Trump and the Republican party as a whole have thrown reliability out the window. Even if the GOP come to their senses and reject the America First ideology and pop their disinformation bubble the damage has still be done to the character of state. The only option for the US is to hold on to its power by sheer muscle power, but that will only last so long.
nanna··on What a crab sees before it gets eaten by a cuttlefish
The deceptive capabilities of cuttlefish has been known since ancient Greece. The 2C AD author of hunting and fishing books Oppian wrote extensively about the 'cunning devices' of cuttlefish, as well as octopuses, which he considers to be par excellennce foxes of the sea.

Yea, the crafty Cuttle-fish also has found a cunning manner of
hunting. From her head? grow long slender branches, like locks of
hair, wherewith as with lines she draws and captures fish, prone in
the sand and coiled beneath her shell.

They have seated in their heads a dark muddy fluid blacker than pitch,
a mysterious drug causing a watery cloud, which is their natural
defence against destruction. When fear seizes them, immediately they
discharge the dusky drops thereof and the cloudy fluid stains and
obscures all around the paths of the sea and ruins all the view ; and
they straightway through the turbid waters easily escape man or haply
mightier fish. ... Such are the cunning devices‘ of fishes.

nanna··on File Pilot: A file explorer built for speed with a modern, robust interface
You do realise that Emacs runs in Windows?
nanna··on File Pilot: A file explorer built for speed with a modern, robust interface
Dired, the file manager that comes in Emacs, is 'completely unrelated' to a file manager named File Pilot?
nanna··on File Pilot: A file explorer built for speed with a modern, robust interface
This is HN so don't bash me for saying this, but Emacs Dired rinses this.

Particularly ironic given that DOGE is reported to be using Signal as its comms platform. [1]

nanna··on Show HN: Bagels – TUI expense tracker
I must say that as an Emacs user, I do feel a bit jealous of UIs like this. Is it something about doing everything in buffers which means we don't make complex layouts like this? Could/should we take inspiration from something like Textual, which this expense tracker is built on top of? https://textual.textualize.io/
nanna··on Icelandic turf houses: Laufas, Glaumbaer and others
Turf roofs are a phenomena of the past in Iceland. In the Faroe Islands the culture is still very much alive and much more ubiquitous and impressive.

nanna··on LineageOS 22
How's LineageOS with WhatsApp, Signal and random banking apps these days?

Or let me put it another way: anyone running LineageOS but struggled to run any essential apps? (I don't care about games or whatever, I mean the apps you need to get around in life).

nanna··on 'The Best of All Possible Worlds' Review: Leibniz Lives Again
> A key to Leibniz’s view is symmetry of creation. The best only emerges against the worst, the beautiful against the ugly, the harmonious against the dissonant.

Leibniz's surviving corpus is massive and sprawling (far larger than any other member of the Republic of Letters) so it could be that i haven't read whatever this is a reference to, but I don't recognise this sense of balance. For Leibniz as i understand him ours is the best of possible worlds because God created it to be this way, in his infinite benevolence and wisdom, and whatever the calamities occur must be part of some kind of plan of which we can only be ken (apperceptive) to a fraction thereof.

Reading Leibniz is like standing at the gate of modern and medieval thought. He didn't so much 'ransack' ideas, as this piece says he does, as try to reconcile even the most contradictory of positions. It's odd but exquisite.

If anyone wants to jump in I would recommend Lloyd Strickland's annotated translation of the Monadology (Leibniz's Monadology). Or really anything by Strickland, including his book on Leibniz on binary. See Strickland's website: http://www.leibniz-translations.com/

nanna··on Code Conversion Language (2019)
Wow Windmove is a little gem that I'd never heard of. Shift-<arrow> is way more intuitive for me for moving around buffers than bashing C-x o or invoking ace window and then choosing a buffer number. Activate with

nanna··on Epic Allows Internet Archive to Distribute Unreal and Unreal Tournament Forever
I made a UT level (DM-Charge) and it got onto the PC Gamer CD as part of a competition. An UT designer reviewed it but was pretty critical which as a teenager made me feel like I didn't have what it took to go further. Shame. These days I look back and think I did pretty damn well to teach myself without any help at all what it took to build a level, one that was good enough to get onto PC Gamer's CD and that I would occasionally see people playing online, even if it wasn't perfect, and wish i had had the confidence to take the criticism on the chin. Something to bear in mind - a lot of talented kids and people out there just need a bit of encouragement and may take criticism harder than you intend it to be.

nanna··on Half-Life 2: 20th Anniversary Update
This. When was the last time you saw anyone write Micro$ith? Young devs wouldn't even know what you're talking about.

It was never about the quality of Windows, but their attacks against FOSS. And I think Nadella largely repaired the damage from that.

nanna··on Debian Junior Desktop live image
That's absolutely wonderful. I got my nephew on Sugar and he's enjoyed it a lot but it's got a hella confusing UI that even stumps me. I've been hoping to install something Windows 98y but packaged for kids for him for years. This looks perfect.

nanna··on Grim Fandango
I'm about the same age but personally I had the opposite experience. For me it was refreshing to play something more mature, more 'intellectual', even if I'm sure a lot of the jokes washed over me.
nanna··on Grim Fandango
I got completely stuck in the Beavis and Butthead adventure game when one of the voice acted characters told me to get a "vee-hickul". As a teenager sitting at my family PC in London, I had no idea what the hell the Texan (?) was saying. Only several years later would I figure it out.

The only other thing I remember from that game is the hock-a-loogie minigame, which I mastered. I wonder if my parents had any idea what I was up to on the computer?
