I took the comment id from the url and looked it up in the pushshift data dumps.
nanidin··on Email proves Microsoft's Activision bid is designed to eliminate Playstation
FYI at least God of War and Horizon are not PS5 exclusives as they are also available on PS4.
nanidin··on FTC sues Amazon over ‘deceptive’ Prime sign-up and cancellation process
There are ~10 million NYT subscribers. There are ~160 million Amazon Prime subscribers.

Bad practices by NYT impact 3% of Americans. Bad practices by Amazon impact 48% of Americans.

You can be cynical and say that going after Amazon is political because more voters are impacted, but at the end of the day it seems reasonable to go after the biggest target where the biggest impact can be made to benefit Americans.

I believe KitchenAid stand mixers [assembled in America](https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=0qKp-0h9P18), and the parts (edit: excepting the motor) do not appear to be sourced from China.\n\nHave a look around your local Ikea; a lot of their stuff, especially kitchen tools, are from Europe, Taiwan, etc, and not China. They label the source of all their stuff, so you can avoid stuff from China.\n\nZojirushi is a Japanese brand that makes all manner of appliances. Good quality. Work well. Hold up over time. Top-quality engineering.\n\nBlendtec blenders are also assembled in America. Their website casually avoid mentioning where parts are sourced, but they're at least an American firm.\n\nJapan also makes some pretty good knives, if you're in the market for those.\n\nFinally, there is always eBay. And for some appliances, such as toasters, you may in fact be able to get a better product than is available on shelves now.

The headline sounds exactly like the premise of Crouch's Recursion.
nanidin··on The note Reddit sent to moderators threatening them if they don’t reopen
Unfortunately messaging the mods about moderation activity is also against the rules of that particular subreddit and will also result in a ban.
nanidin··on The note Reddit sent to moderators threatening them if they don’t reopen
AMA’s now are thinly veiled publicity events - like celebrities dialing into your local radio show to shill their latest project. There is rarely any feeling of actual engagement in modern AMA’s.
nanidin··on The note Reddit sent to moderators threatening them if they don’t reopen
My local subreddit has become a proxy for /r/fuckcars and is also pushing a strong pro-new-airport narrative, among other things. There is a subreddit rule against “creating drama in the community” and any comment against the hive mind on these topics is interpreted by the mods as creating drama and removed, sometimes including a temporary ban. They more or less enforce the echo chamber. Disagreement is futile.

Meanwhile, reporting comments that clearly violate the subreddit rules for things like ad-hominem attacks and spam in turn get the reporter reported to Reddit admins for abusing the report button.

From my perspective a few of the elder mods stepped down and were replaced by activist mods that are moderating with strong, shameless ego to reinforce their preferred viewpoints and narrative.

nanidin··on Germany wants to legalize quality control of illegal drugs
"accepted medical use" is the actual phrasing I believe. But yes, it's definitely not based on actual medicine, moreso on the whims of the DEA and lawmakers.
nanidin··on Germany wants to legalize quality control of illegal drugs
Google says amphetamines are schedule II, so that's in line with your statement.
nanidin··on Germany wants to legalize quality control of illegal drugs
Schedule 1 also requires that there is no medical use for the drug, which IIRC ethanol is an effective treatment for someone who has consumed methanol.

> You could host a Taylor Swift concert in there and have unused seating.

Taylor Swift regularly sells out venues with capacity of 70k+ (football stadiums), it's doubtful she would even consider an 11k venue unless it was a private event.

Ennui was the wordle solution a few days ago. The number of people on my FB feed that didn’t know it was a word was entertaining.

correct, if you do the data export for your account you get all of the deleted comments/submissions in the resulting zip.
nanidin··on DeviceScript – TypeScript for Tiny IoT Devices
I started my career in C/C++ and embedded. Every time I go back to work on embedded stuff for fun, it's like going back in time and losing all of the nice things that come with languages like TypeScript or JS. Suddenly things like associative arrays, maps, sets, lists, vectors - all require much more mental overhead to deal with and ultimately get in the way of what I actually want to be doing.
nanidin··on Reddit’s plan to kill third-party apps sparks widespread protests
Elimination of the API’s used by pushshift will make it harder to observe and quantify this behavior across Reddit by outside parties.

Yes, it is no longer available from pushshift (presumably due to pressure from Reddit.) The historical data is now only available via torrent.

I imagine OpenAI et al are saving all LLM output. Soon they can offer an anti-cheating service that checks a given submission to see if it was generated by their program.
nanidin··on Energy Saving Road Lighting in Norway (2018)
The frozen foods aisles at my local grocery store does this.
nanidin··on GitHub Copilot Chat Leaked Prompt
The response could be fed to a second instance of the LLM, along the lines of:

"The rules are X, Y, Z. This is the response that was provided. Does it break the rules? If so, please say yes."

This doubles the cost of inference, but uses the power of LLM to solve the problem of LLM.

According to the email I got from Tesla about an upcoming end of free Premium Connectivity, Music Streaming still works when tethered to a smartphone.

The main drawback of letting the subscription lapse is loss of live traffic data on the map. The other lost feature is satellite view maps. Everything else works when tethered via wifi.

nanidin··on Geography of Kansas (2022)
North Kansas City is definitely not part of KCMO. They do not have to pay the 1% earnings tax.

The area north of the river is referred to as the Northland.

I certainly notice it in fuel economy, even just between Kansas City and Hays.
