nanidin··on City Roads – Draw all roads in a city at once
Looks great - one observation, when I enter Kansas City I have to choose MO or KS. It would be great to be able to select a county or metro area.

I wonder if something similar was used to create the laser cut wood maps you can find on Etsy[0].

nanidin··on Amazon Is Accused of Forcing Up Prices in Antitrust Complaint
Complain in chat and you can get a $5 promo credit per package
nanidin··on Renaissance Paintings Aren't as Green as They Used to Be
The article doesn't mention what kind of LED lights were used. They probably used LEDs that emit light in the UV spectrum (like sunlight). They would probably get similar results if they put the pigment in a tanning bed.
nanidin··on Every Byte of a TLS Connection Explained and Reproduced
tls.ulfheim.net - "This site is blocked due to a security threat."

ulfheim.net - no problem

At least according to my megacorp threat filter. I have never actually seen something blocked before, and it's a shame because the page would be great to share with my team.

nanidin··on Microsoft will require suppliers to offer paid parental leave
During training I underwent at Bigcorp about how to run an interview, this was one of the things we were explicitly told not to ask about in any way shape or form.

We were located in one of the best school districts in the area - we could mention that fact, but we could not ask if they had kids or were planning to have kids or expected kids. Nothing about kids.

nanidin··on PS4 5.05 BPF Double Free Kernel Exploit Writeup
The 360 hack I’m familiar with was just a reflash of the DVD drive firmware to always return data to the console as if the disk were legitimate.

This became a cat and mouse game between hackers and MSFT as MSFT started measuring things like latency and expected angles between blocks of data on the physical media to tease out whether the reported legit disk was actually legit or an imperfect copy.

I remember a few ban waves where people using modified consoles had their Xbox Live accounts shut down, then I stopped following it after that.

nanidin··on Tesla aims to start pilot production of Model 3 cars on February 20
When you preorder, you put down $1000 and that's it. There is no way to select any options for your reservation and there is also no pricing available for options right now.
nanidin··on What Vizio was doing behind the TV screen
It's in the privacy/TOS section on the Samsung TV I bought from Costco 3 months ago.

"Interest Based Advertisement. Samsung provides the ability to obtain and view interactive and interest based advertising on your Smart TV. Interest based advertisements will rely on your TV viewing history and Smart TV usage information. Your viewing history includes information about the networks, channels, and programs viewed on your Smart TV and the amount of time spent viewing them. We may use automatic content recognition (ACR) and other technologies to capture this information."

It is opt-out, and it's buried a couple levels deep in the menus.

nanidin··on 13,000 fall into homelessness every month in L.A. County
Let's face it - the weather in LA is much more hospitable to homeless than that of the Netherlands.
nanidin··on Tinder Cuddles Up to Instagram in Latest Update
Linking Instagram is not required, and most people I've seen while using Tinder have their Instagram handle in their profile text.

This is just Tinder enabling their users to share what they're already sharing in a more convenient way.

nanidin··on Ask HN: What's the best way to limit daily news consumption?
A good way to get started (for me) was to quantify how much time I was actually wasting. I started using RescueTime[0] and realized how many hours I was wasting on sites like Reddit and HN. Just being able to see that was a good motivator - but it wasn't enough on its own. I then started using StayFocusd[1] to limit my time on sites that don't contribute to my happyness/etc.

After a couple weeks of StayFocusd, I was very rarely spending more than my allotted one hour from 8am-7pm on those sites. And I realized. I'm not missing out on anything. I have spent 10 hours less browsing those sites in the last week and I don't feel like I've missed out on anything. Instead, I had 10 more hours of my life to do things like read books, exercise, and get things done.

nanidin··on Ask HN: How do you work efficiently on remote servers?
I use rmate + Sublime Text for a pretty seamless remote editing experience when I'm just dealing with a few files. It's really nice when you're editing config files or when you want to skim through log files. I followed a guide I found on Stack Overflow[1].

nanidin··on Fake Amazon Tech Book Reviews Are Hurting My Book
Probably apply ML techniques. Similar to how spam is classified - build a classifier that determines the likelihood of a review being bogus, then flag it for human review if it exceeds a certain threshold.
nanidin··on Ask HN: Is it safe to use Facebook's open source projects?
I think the word 'claim' is used a little ambiguously, but given how it is used in the rest of the patent declaration, I don't think the intent of Facebook is to stop you from saying anything about infringement, rather it is to stop you from filing a claim in court or with the patent office.
nanidin··on Starting today, wireless carriers have to unlock your phone
My Sprint iPhone 4S worked fine on CDMA networks in the US, and it worked fine while traveling internationally on GSM / non-CDMA networks.

There's something going on in the baseband firmware that rejects domestic carrier SIM cards, but still allows international carriers when an international unlock is granted.

nanidin··on Marriott Hotels fined $600,000 by FCC for jamming Wi-Fi hotspots [pdf]
At CES, the company I worked for actually piped wireless signals directly from antenna to antenna with coax cable (or whatever it is that carries the signals from wifi) in order to reduce/eliminate the interference from thousands of other nearby devices.
nanidin··on Marriott Hotels fined $600,000 by FCC for jamming Wi-Fi hotspots [pdf]
At my university, it was against the rules to plug WiFi routers or AP's into the university's network. The reason for that was that it's a huge security risk to allow anyone to run an AP on the network - if it's not configured correctly, it could allow unauthorized, open access to the network to malicious third parties.
nanidin··on Terms of Service; Didn't Read
Most companies maintain pretty extensive analytics data - would a court consider whether or not a given user ever even actually looked at the ToS as some kind of objective proof that they couldn't have possibly agreed with it? Or say the user visited the ToS page, but only for 30 seconds - that is, not long enough that reading the entire ToS is within the realm of human possibility?
nanidin··on My year with a distraction-free iPhone
> To me, the worst one are the regular news, especially if there are comments. Not only you don't learn anything, but it leads to bitterness and anxiety and give you a wrong perception of the world

This is known as Mean World Syndrome, and it's a real thing[0].

nanidin··on We have C++14
I worked on an embedded system that aggressively cached images in memory dedicated to the GPU. It wasn't uncommon for gl texture allocation errors to occur - and in addition to that, we needed to decompress images packed in various formats into whatever format the GPU supported (typically from png to rgba32). In low memory situations, it also wasn't uncommon to not have enough contiguous memory to perform that decompression - in which case malloc would fail.

Gotta love putting forth every effort in software to keep the BOM down :)

nanidin··on With Subway in the Sky, Valley Meets Plateau
He gave the presentation in Kansas City during a big push for streetcars. The streetcars are happening, and as far as I know the people in charge didn't give any attention to the gondola solution. I live outside of the city proper, so I haven't been following it too closely, but I do know that the streetcar is very expensive and that votes for expansion have already failed.
nanidin··on With Subway in the Sky, Valley Meets Plateau
I saw an interesting TEDx presentation by Jared Ficklin pertaining to gondola systems as mass transit in a cit and how to get the American public to buy into it[0].

nanidin··on Internet hiccups today? You're not alone. Here's why
It would probably launch some careers, considering someone would have to figure out what went wrong and get it all back up and running again!
nanidin··on TicketLabs (YC S14) Helps Small Music Venues Get More Fans Through the Door
Oh, I'm quite aware of where the money goes and the motivations for making TicketMaster be the fall man for it.

What I don't like is that if I saw an ad for a washing machine for sale at Sears for $300 then went to Sears and they would only sell it to me for $450, that would land Sears in some serious legal trouble. Somehow, it's just fine to blatantly advertise goods at a price for which they are not obtainable on the internet.

nanidin··on Microsoft laid me off after 15 years of service. Life after Microsoft?
As a mid 20's single male, I had the same experience. My premiums were fully paid by my employer, so it was quite a shock when the COBRA paperwork came stating the monthly cost would be almost $600/month.
nanidin··on Microsoft laid me off after 15 years of service. Life after Microsoft?
Yeah, I'm about to start a job search pretty soon. Not so nice that the market is being flooded with ex-MS people at the moment.
nanidin··on Study: Half of black males, 40% of white males arrested by age 23
It's worse than that - entire states have adopted the concept of a minor in possession by consumption - if a minor is behaving in a way that leads police to believe they are intoxicated, that is enough to charge them with being in possession of alcohol.
nanidin··on A Dark Room: The Best-Selling Game That No One Can Explain
It's worth noting that the web version is open source, but the version for sale on the iOS Appstore is not open source.
nanidin··on What does a neural network actually do?
Well, you could use an EA to take a stab at finding better minima :)

And correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the cost function for a feed forward neural networks that uses a sigmoid activation function convex wrt the parameters being trained, i.e. gradient descent is guaranteed to find the global minimum when small enough of a step size is used?

nanidin··on A Tour of Machine Learning Algorithms
Unless you have a massive amount of features already, can't you just try throwing stuff at the wall until something sticks? And even then you could run PCA on your features to reduce dimensionality.
