Bookworm since the 90s. Learnt programming at the start of the millennium. Have been taking a meandering (frog approach iykwim wink) smell the flowers approach to it so far. However I feel like I've hit some sort of extremely boring desert or one huge mountain of one big ass rock.

nandhinianand··on It Turns Out You Can Bullshit a Bullshitter After All
As someone oscillating between loser and clueless, I appreciate the reference..
nandhinianand··on NFTs Are a Dangerous Trap
Because not everyone is the "economically rational agent" that just wants to maximize profits as much as they can. May be you disagree, and think most people are and it's strong enough to be a normal distribution. (I am not sure it is, but i sure hope it is not a normal distribution and there are enough people outside).

I disagree with the last part about direct proportionality between energy and money. But my real wonder is if we can use this hashed/mined out coins for something that is actually useful socially.(even if it is a transaction of services anonymously.) I keep wondering if we can create a crypto currency + IOT devices + energy tracking system that can value the coins you have based on the energy sources that fed into mining it. But it feels so complex that I am not optimistic about creating such a thing..
nandhinianand··on NFTs Are a Dangerous Trap
> There is no such thing as "excess power" for crytomining.

I was thinking the idea seemed to have some validity.. For ex: storage of solar/wind-powered is critical and the current inefficiencies and batteries rely on lithium and alternatives are still in research.(http://worrydream.com/ClimateChange/#moving-storage) ..

so in theory there's a system that can be built around the excess energy(of renewable systems) + crypto mining as a incentive for taking up renewable energy setups.(Of course this cannot convert the mined stuff back to energy so it's a one-way stuff at best and has it's own cons and pros).

Loved it .... I've been craving a replacement for Douglas Adams for a while now.. Terry Pratchett was quite close.. but now he too is gone.. perhaps it's time for me to find other writers or write stuff myself..
nandhinianand··on Do Language Models Know How Heavy an Elephant Is?
Seriously a downvote ?? for what?? ughh.... "bavula kappa" ==> frog in the well.. a metaphor for biased people(or people who live in a bubble).
nandhinianand··on Do Language Models Know How Heavy an Elephant Is?
Bleh.. .English and it's weird grammar .. Sometimes I find it such a messed up language compared to my native tongue..... I guess it's the separation of modifiers and nouns that's part of the problem.
nandhinianand··on Why Learn Haskell? (2018)
Ooops i meant to say type inference.. Ah well fat fingers.. or is misconnected synapses between Broca's area and the motor cortex?? shrug whatever.
nandhinianand··on Why Learn Haskell? (2018)
Hmm.. interesting.. i was and still am excited about the type inheritance. Alas I code with python for a living.. :-(

Please do write about other rabbit holes too.. ..If not a long form article, a short compilation of the holes (and links if you can find the time to get them) would be very useful.. I've been interested and flirting with haskell for a while, but become too time-poor the last 4-5 years to do anything even hobby level.
nandhinianand··on Show HN: Mind Graph
Ughh.. turns out heroku and the aspell-en + pyenchant dictionary don't play well together.. gotta figure out a way to fix it.

nandhinianand··on A Simple Way to Reduce Cognitive Bias
It's a very lovely speech..
nandhinianand··on Parents of daughters are more likely to divorce than those with sons
Here's my take on it... A younger non-parent me understands the western take on "not beating your children" very well. But the current parent me can also see why parents sometimes would beat their kids.(not that it is right.). Honestly, negative feedback/reinforcement is also needed to discipline(and I agree physical assault is the wrong way to do it.). The point I'm trying to make here is the stance against hitting your children stems from a "ideal well-adjusted parent" (not different from the "rational actor" in economics). And Yes, I'm contrasting the "ideal vs the actual". For context: I grew up in India in the 80-90s in a rural area. Personally, in my parenting I'm starting to use the "sama-dhana-beda-dhanda" ordering to some extent and customization for family settings of course.

The question is "Is the (total) cost of those high quality food from greenhouse ops cheaper than same quality food from traditional land agriculture?"
nandhinianand··on Over 90% of Indian techies in the US are upper-caste Indians
> If the person is so forward with this, isnt that a good filter (of sorts) to avoid a specific person who will judge you by such things rather than your character?

Sure do note, this is a friends' mom so atleast a couple of decades older than me.. I've a good friendship with her son, so i guess it's just a question of being polite with her and limiting spending time with her.

nandhinianand··on Over 90% of Indian techies in the US are upper-caste Indians
Okay few pointers, there's a bunch of dialects in the language that vary mostly based on which sub-part we come from. In turn, most sub-parts have one or other caste majority, additionally, people take a guess based on looks, accent and choice of vocabulary too.. So she'd assume something and keep moving on..
nandhinianand··on Over 90% of Indian techies in the US are upper-caste Indians
I have a friend whose parents converted to christianity, and so my friend grew up christian. But guess what, the first time I met my friends' mom(at his wedding), the first question she asked after verifying native state(TamilNadu) was which caste I belonged to. (And yeah just to be clear, she asked which caste I'm from, and she/they're from xxx caste). So no caste is not something people escape from converting religion.
nandhinianand··on Scientists say a mind-bending rhythm in the brain can act like ketamine
I've experienced and seen this too. I agree, the sensation is probably induced and probably also was used (in the past) as a way to air out grievances anyone might have over other, the type of grievance that would usually be considered too trivial for a local panchayat or law centric solutions.
nandhinianand··on Let employees sell their equity
> reason about equity comp on a per share basis The one reason I find this highly skeptical, is that this is in some sense a made-up figure. In Options, It's an estimate of a per share once the company goes public. In other cases, it's something the founders have estimated based on market potential and other things.
nandhinianand··on Fast Typing: Keyboard Layouts
I didn't .. and yeah the OP is right about the jhkl keys getting broken up, but I don't use them as much to move around as either wordwise movement or line wise movements in vim. I don't have to more than say 3/4 character wise movements. But then I'm a pythonista, and not a regular programmer role anyways.(more closer to data science /BA roles)... So yeah, that plays a part ..
nandhinianand··on Fast Typing: Keyboard Layouts
I also learnt QWERTY->vim->DVORAK in that order... And yeah i started experimenting with DVORAK when I was trying to build a habit of journal and found that it makes quite a bit of difference to typing continuously for say 15 minutes or more. Much less tiring and much less errors.

Currently considering expanding out from vim into vscode or pycharm.... (have failed and come back to vim multiple times in the past due to muscle memory).

nandhinianand··on San Francisco will put ‘CEO tax’ on the ballot this November
Uhmm.. mostly because the value an employee(CEO or not) brings to a business is already a probability function with variables(one of them simply being time and it's impact a unknown) and different expected values. If we believe that result-oriented rewarding is practiced, it's questionable that it can be estimated how much of an impact CEO can have and how it can be 200x of other employee. Infact, the reverse question of why pay a CEO a high salary should be the more common question, rather than why not.

-- I am skipping unknown unknowns for now, but you use your imagination.

nandhinianand··on Thank You MDN
Ah.. I don't know how much of a demand it is, but Mozilla being a non-profit and such a big presence in the Open source browser space, I think we all have the right to criticize and even start forks of it if we can afford the time.
nandhinianand··on Thank You MDN
By MSF do you mean medicine sans frontiers(https://www.msf.org/) ??
nandhinianand··on Epic Systems workers are organizing
Because currently there's a employer PR, services like glassdoor, etc. but still not enough power to influence or avoid future bad faith executive decisions. I think the case of google's work on a defense project counts. When I was a fresh grad, Google was the great, good go-to place, it has changed. Given how big it is I don't know what effect Unions can have, and I hate the negative nepotistic and other effects of Unions, but an argument could be made, google would still be true to the "Don't be evil", if there were unions.* P.S: Admittedly it's just an argument that may not be tested/testable.
