namecheapTA··on Meta managers are urged to identify, push out low performers
I feel like every company in existence has basically had a memo or meeting like this.
namecheapTA··on Tell HN: HN Moved from M5 to AWS
People joke but from the top of a decent mountain I can reach 45 miles into the bay area from me on a $150 2m radio in my truck with rooftop antenna.
namecheapTA··on Former Japan PM Shinzo Abe Unconscious After Shooting; Man in Custody
I stopped going to San Francisco and Oakland years ago, so my odds of death are not anywhere near that. I also wouldn't go to Chicago and several other cities. When I drove down Baja Mexico, I also avoided stopped at all in Tijuana. If you don't go where the murders are, it's pretty safe out there still.
namecheapTA··on Notice of termination of Twitter merger agreement
Sell $40b of Tesla without causing a dip, is worth a lot more than $1b. A 3% dip from news he's selling that much stock would cost way more than $1b.
namecheapTA··on Former Japan PM Shinzo Abe Unconscious After Shooting; Man in Custody
Statistics still matter. The odds of dying in a car accident throughout your life are about 1 in 100. If you take out suicide and gang violence, getting shot randomly is much less likely than dying in a car. Yet I go and drive around for fun some days and don't worry one but about it.
namecheapTA··on “Homelessness is a Housing Problem”: More housing lowers homelessness
A home in SF is over $1 million, or a 1 bedroom apartment is $3000.

How much would home prices have to fall to make it 'affordable' and a viable option compared to homelessness? Are there really people living on the street because they can't find an apartment for $1200? But they aren't willing to move 90 miles to Merced for an $800 studio?

namecheapTA··on Vets today are like doctors yesterday
I've worked in car sales for over a decade. I've always hated the service departments for their totally militant focus on extracting as much money as possible from customers, with any concept of value or honest recommendations be damned.

The last few times I've stepped into several vet offices, I get the exact same sense of money extraction and even see many of the same methods/training/tools/tactics.

namecheapTA··on A 6-foot man earning $62K per year is as desirable as a 5'6“ man who earns $237K
I just think the money is a weird metric. If a guy is 5'6", he could either remain a chubby dork and try to earn $270k, or he could work out and have some kind of leadership role in his community to get a better quality woman. Sounds like working out and being more assertive is a lot easier than making 3x the national income for most people. Also, if you do remain a dork and use money, your wife will still feel like she sold her soul and sex life for money. Why not just become desirable instead and then also make as much money as you want?
namecheapTA··on Why your next home computer should be an old Xeon workstation (2019)
Northern California is not much different. It actually makes most plug in hybrids cheaper to run on gas than electric at around $3.50 a gallon and below.

namecheapTA··on A 6-foot man earning $62K per year is as desirable as a 5'6“ man who earns $237K
While I'm not short, I have short friends and have also seen the exbfs and new bfs of my girlfriends. A gf in med school once left me for another med student that was maybe 5'7". My exgf just married a guy 6 months after meeting him.. he's 5'8" at the most. I have countless examples of girls that sounded like they really appreciated my height, and maybe they did, but they end up with shorter guys that have other physical or attitude traits going for them. Basically as you would expect statistically.
namecheapTA··on A 6-foot man earning $62K per year is as desirable as a 5'6“ man who earns $237K
I'm 6'4" and have been a serial dater for 20 years (thanks Spark Match then POF then Tinder.)

Ive played around with personas a bit, while obviously my hight stays the same.

Height is not the be all end all. Even at 6'4", if I get a bit chubby, I get zero attention from women and the ones I contact basically need to be treated like relationship wife material to get anything going. If I work out for 6+ months, cashier's are giggling and fumbling my change every time I buy something.

If I'm feeling off that week or month and not putting out "interesting fun vibes" I'll get ghosted pretty fast online. If I'm in the mood to put in the work, they're ready to take my home after the first date.

I bet that if a 5'6" man is rocking a great personality, he will outdo a tall man with a bland personality. Is it easier to fake a positive attitude when you're tall and feel stronger than most guys around? Sure. I think this is what women associate with height more than just pure height.

A 5'8" firefighter could easily steal the gf of a 6'4" chubby software developer, atleast for a few nights.

namecheapTA··on Rare video games collection heist
The stat I gave was for the home owner being injured during the burglary. This is not even talking about all the burglaries when no one is home or when they run off when they realize someone is home (and could have a gun). But definitely, if someone doesn't live near a big city like SF or San Jose or Berkeley, they probably don't need a gun as much as people in those towns. But it's still probably a good idea just in case. Without one, you just have to hope it never happens to you.
namecheapTA··on Former Apple exec who enforced insider trading rules admits to insider trading
My father works construction and owns two houses in California, both paid off even. Although in the central valley.

If an apple engineer can't buy a house or two in the bay area, who can?

namecheapTA··on Rare video games collection heist
In America, a home robbery including injury to the habitants, is more common that a whole house fire. I looked this up years ago when discussing gun ownerships with friends, refuting why they think gun ownership is for the paranoid, but yet they all have fire insurance on their homes.
namecheapTA··on Ask HN: Where have all the forums gone?
I often add the word forum to car/motorcycle related things I'm searching for. If I leave the word out, I end up in worthless seo retail span world. Put the word in, I get people discussing the issue. Thanks Google.
namecheapTA··on SQLite or PostgreSQL? It's Complicated
It seems a lot harder to setup correctly and use, and I don't really know what benefit I'd get.
namecheapTA··on SQLite or PostgreSQL? It's Complicated
I have a fully working SaaS with 30+ companies paying, with 20 employees each on average. I wrote it as a self taught programmer via YouTube and stackoverflow. It is hosted on a $2 a month namecheap sharedhosting. Php back, jQuery front. I use cpanel to set things up.

It runs faster than 90% of webapps on the internet.

namecheapTA··on 58% of Americans are living paycheck to paycheck – including 30% earning $250k
Do you think this was a worthwhile trade-off? Would life be that much worse back home near family, with a stagnated career owning your own cheaper home?
namecheapTA··on Basement Fertility
My parents moved to a country with zero support network and where they didn't speak the language, all so that they could soon afford to buy a home.

Tons of young people today won't even move to the valley or to another state.

I worked in car sales and basically every dealership mechanic over 28 owns a home. But tech people complain about how they can't buy one somehow.

namecheapTA··on Mental Model: Difficult Problems vs. Hard Work
I sold cars for a living and was basically top 0.1-0.2% at it nationwide.

Every now and then a coworker would say that selling cars was easy work. So I'd ask him if it's so easy, why didn't he promise to double his sales next month? Ohh.. because that would be hard.

A lot of things are easy to do casually and hard to do intensely at scale.

namecheapTA··on SMS phishing is way too easy
Burner phone numbers in the US seem to be of a particular range of numbers and can also be flagged. I used to use pay as you go burners for random tasks in the past and noticed they gave me trouble when trying to use them to get verification codes sometimes.
namecheapTA··on SCOTUS Says You Can't Sue the Cops for Violating Your Miranda Rights
Police arrest millions of people a year, and a few go south often when the person getting arrested won't follow directions. I bet less than 1% go poorly, which in my opinion is pretty impressive considering the people they are arresting.
namecheapTA··on About Last Week’s Announcement
75% of people assembling a kit car said it was pretty easy!

Ignoring that 95% of people looked at the parts requirement list and instructions and ran away.

namecheapTA··on Starbucks may close its bathrooms to the public again
Why does there need to be more housing built in an already dense area? People have moved for thousands of years to areas where they were more easily able to afford to buy or build a home. My parents moved from basically a 3rd world country to the US, not speaking the language, with about $200 in 1988. They already had me as a child to deal with too. Now a college grad doesn't want to move to another part of the US to afford a cheap house?
namecheapTA··on SpaceX said to fire employees involved in letter rebuking Elon Musk
People working at a rocket company work under the same basic value structure that a person working at a concrete company does.

People in academia do not. The fact that you missed this and thought comparing the number of people in a particular industry subset of a capitalistic enterprise to academia would somehow prove a point basically shows me how poor the thought/logic skills are in academia... The one thing they're supposed to be better at.

namecheapTA··on SpaceX said to fire employees involved in letter rebuking Elon Musk
Implying that academia is anything like the real world that 99% of people exist in is something only an academic would be foolish enough to imply.
namecheapTA··on Toyota unveils 8.7 kWh battery for residential applications
I live about an hour from San Francisco and my power goes out about once a quarter for several hours. It's not the end of the world, but twice in the last year it happened while I was making dinner. A weird feeling to realize I can't even make food without the governments help.
namecheapTA··on Starbucks may close its bathrooms to the public again
If rent wasnt super high, where would the person that happily rents an apartment for $4k a month actually live? Since his apartment wouldn't be available as someone paying $900 a month would still be in it.
namecheapTA··on Faced with scooter seizures, Bird pays property tax bill months late
The fact that they are basically taxes not tied to income is pretty annoying. If you're barely scraping by, the state should not be taxing you as heavily on a gallon of gasoline as a doctor that barely blinks as they fill up their Sclass.
namecheapTA··on Carmakers feel chip crisis easing
Gas was not below $1 a gallon in 1996. Especially not in California. Also, cars weren't getting the mpg they are now. Cost per mile relative to minimum wage probably isn't that far off.. which you can probably see from data that basically everyone is driving as much as ever.. because other than mental sticker shock, it's still fine.
