I would love to hear why HSR is not "public transport."

Also, Central valley is not just an agricultural place: "On less than 1 percent of the total farmland in the United States, the Central Valley produces 8 percent of the nation's agricultural output by value: US$43.5 billion in 2013." From https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Central_Valley_(California)

Well, how about living in Merced and working in SF area? If a trip from Merced to SF would be less than 70mins, this would beat all rush-hour traffic along 101, and become viable living option.

Isn't it a classical chicken and egg problem? Reliance on car => no public transport; No public transport => reliance on car. Someone should make an effort to change it.

Judging the road by its endpoints is not a fair assessment. Merced to Bakersfield will connect a large portion of the Central Valley, which is one of the most productive agricultural regions in the world with 7.2M people living in it. While indeed Merced and Bakersfield have 84K and 380K populations in the cities, the population of these and covered areas are much larger; (250K in Merced, 930K in Fresno area, 850K in Bakersfield, etc.)

I just want to mention that these algorithms were known way back and it is sad that the authors of CRAN package do not acknowledge it in their docs:

1. O(NK^2) dynamic programming from 1965 by James Bruce (https://dspace.mit.edu/bitstream/handle/1721.1/4396/RLE-TR-4...)

2. O(KNlogN) dynamic + divide&conquer algorighm from 1989 from Xiaolin Wu and John Rokne (http://doi.acm.org/10.1145/75427.75472)

3. O(NK) algorithm from 1991 by Xiaolin Wu (http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/0196-6774(91)90039-2)

I stand corrected regarding your account. The protest have started due to increase in natural gas prices (not the gasoline), but the root cause is not the price but income inequality. In any case, it has no (even not a remote) connection to the bitcoin network and its energy consumption, nor to coal plants.

My comment was an urge to stay civil and prevent any rush excitement regarding the Bitcoin's crisis without knowing the whole picture. Specifically to counter the comments of "Let's hope they stay shut off then."

PS. Yes my account is green: I have registered today once I saw this discussion, but believe me it is not a throwaway.

Do you know that internet is down due to civil unrest and many people are reported dead? While I understand your excitement towards Bitcoin's problems, please read up on context why it is happening.

While Kazakh people are generally tolerant to Borat jokes, the timing of this one is most inappropriate. In case you do knot know, there is a civil unrest in Kazakhstan, many people are killed, and many more are missing. I urge users of this website to be civil and stay away from any demeaning jokes, at least for now.
