nabusman··on Alarms in medical equipment
Pure deregulation can lead to a bit of anarchy, but a more measured approach that ensures that the regulation doesn't act as a way to decrease supply and increase profits for the industry would make sense. Probably something for Lina Khan to look into.
nabusman··on Cognitive reflection, intelligence, and cognitive abilities: A meta-analysis
Isn't the other way around? Take a fireman, he's running into a burning building, whereas I'd think the first impulse would be to run away, hence he's reflecting on his first impulse to be brave.
nabusman··on Show HN: Talk to Me Human – my game about social persuasion
Came here to say this. I could see people with mild social anxiety (mild enough that it doesn't require professional help) using this to improve themselves.
nabusman··on Google Voice goes US only
I used to use Skype for this when I was traveling outside the US. I also imagine you can set up something simple with Twilio as well, IIRC they have a no-code configuration tool for this kind of thing (simple forwarding, text to email, etc.)
nabusman··on Ask HN: What are you passionate about at the moment?
I'm starting down this path soon as well. Any books/resources that you recommend?
nabusman··on Ask HN: Lessons learned from implementing user-facing analytics / dashboards?
Any recommended libraries for making external dashboards?
nabusman··on Code Llama, a state-of-the-art large language model for coding
I would add that having open source gen AI will enable the creation of content for metaverse / AR / VR, which will improve the chances that all of that will take off.
nabusman··on Pyro: A universal, probablistic programming language
Is revenue optimization about adjusting prices of products/services to maximize profit/revenue or something else?
nabusman··on Show HN: BrowserBox – do stuff with browsers that you can't normally
Maybe I'm being obtuse here, but isn't that was Selenium does? How is this different?
nabusman··on I tried starting a manufacturing unit in India (2020)
I think the state of Bihar is trying to do that (just armchair analysis from reading the news)

IME the bribes are often not asked directly but instead the people in the office throw up insurmountable obstacles so that you initiate the conversation of bribes. I don't know why they do this, maybe because it puts them in a better negotiating position?
nabusman··on Indian lawmaker arrested after tweet criticising Narendra Modi

nabusman··on Ask HN: Do you use an optimization solver? Which one? Do you like it?
Not OP, but I work as a data scientist consultant, so various industries applications require different types of solvers e.g. mining operations optimization, branch location optimization, etc. would often each require a different solver depending on the problem space.
nabusman··on Ask HN: Do you use an optimization solver? Which one? Do you like it?
What are you thoughts on GLPK?
nabusman··on Tell HN: Recruiters are lying about remote positions
You can also get denied and get kicked out, it's not a guaranteed process AFAIK IANAL.
nabusman··on Ask HN: Any scientifically proven techniques to boost concentration?
This happens to me with higher BPM music e.g. drum & bass or techno, but with lower BPM and a little melody (but no voices) I can listen for 10-12 hours while coding without beat fatigue.
nabusman··on Ask HN: Any scientifically proven techniques to boost concentration?
Couldn't agree more, Goa trance/Goa psych is great for this. I usually throw on digitally imported [1] for listening and discovering new genres. My recent favorite is psydub and melodic house.

nabusman··on Obsidian – A knowledge base from a local folder of plain text Markdown files
I use simplenote for this. It is basic text-based note keeping and free (by the Wordpress folks).
nabusman··on Regularization is all you need: simple neural nets can excel on tabular data
Any references/recommendations on the best practices to analyze a network, weights, etc.?
nabusman··on Brave buys a search engine, promises no tracking, no profiling
Grocery stores do not just use the data internally but also sell their Point of Sale data to third parties that analyze it and then sell their analysis to anyone willing to pay for it (mostly that is CPG companies). Point is: it isn't necessarily a direct benefit to the end customer.
nabusman··on On the Experience of Being Poor-Ish, for People Who Aren't
I would love to understand how this is different in a metropolitan in Canada (e.g. Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal). Is it much better than it is here in the US of A or more of the same?
nabusman··on How Chinese Officials Hijacked My Company
So, you are saying to brand yourself but what stops someone from copying your brand and marketing?

Also, not all business can be personalized solutions (would you want a custom car that no mechanic knows how to fix?), furthermore you lose economies of scale, which is a major reason why most companies are viable outside of tech.

nabusman··on Ask HN: What startup/technology is on your 'to watch' list?
Sounds interesting, what language is best positioned for GPGPU's?
nabusman··on Ask HN: Not resting fully because can't sleep long enough
From what I've seen in meditating both morning and night is that the purpose of morning meditation is to ground and focus, whereas for evening meditation is to relax and let go. Subtle difference in intent.
nabusman··on Ask HN: Feasible Alternative to the MacBook Pro?
I bought a Zenbook a year ago but the trackpad was pretty much unusable. Though Ubuntu 16.04 worked with minor tweaks.

nabusman··on Ask HN: What book have you given as a gift?
- 48 Law of Power (Because we all have to deal with power games and politics)

- The Intelligent Investor (Because people ask how do I invest)

- Fooled by Randomness (Same ideas as Black Swan but oriented towards the markets)

Edit: formating

nabusman··on Ask HN: What book have you given as a gift?
Is this a new form of comment spam?
nabusman··on Ask HN: What book have you given as a gift?
On Writing Well by William Zinsser was a great book on writing. Though it's a bit more conceptual than Strunk and White.
nabusman··on Hello from Orkut
It was big in Brazil and India. I saw the transition from Orkut to Facebook in India. I arrived in India with a Facebook account in 2005 and nobody was on Facebook, so I created an Orkut account. By 2008 Orkut was gone, Facebook was all everyone knew.
