nabeelahmed13··on How linear regression works intuitively and how it leads to gradient descent
As another ardent user I actually think it is a good but unfortunate heuristic.

Previously I rarely saw it used in my English-as-second-language peer group, even by otherwise decent writers. Now I see it everywhere in personal/professional updates in my feed by. The simpler assumption is that people over-rely on LLMs for crafting these posts, and LLMs disproportionately use em dashes.

Probably speculating given the lifetime of most small-scale Google apps.
nabeelahmed13··on Ellen Pao Is Stepping Down as Reddit’s Chief
I understand your point. In the announcement over at Reddit, people have noted how much of a textbook PR move this is looking like, so I'm assuming the "this is why" is equally calculated and not the whole picture.

However, you're right. The two reasons are not mutually exclusive.

No one is "reducing" anything.

Altman is not justifying the arbitrary bans (or any Reddit admin shenanigans) here, that is not the topic of this sentence. He is talking strictly about one dangerous activity that gets offenders banned: death threats, which Ellen Pao (the human at the other end) received.

We don't know why Pao went out. We can suspect it was the backlash (more likely), or disagreements with the board [0] but we can suspect.

But that does nothing to make her opposition entirely legitimate, when at its strongest it was hijacked by namecalling, cyber-bullying, and yes, threats to Pao's life. The subset of Redditors who did this deserve to be told how shitty it is. The remaining, legitimate opposition should recognize the distinction.

nabeelahmed13··on How to become an unpaid technical support worker for Google
Or:

1. Be Taylor Swift

2. Write blog post

3. Have the company publicly fix the issue for all users in one go.

nabeelahmed13··on Edward Snowden: The World Says No to Surveillance
Those mistaking Snowden for being naive and idealistic, note that he may actually believe there has been progress.

Sadly, I don't have a source, but I remember him saying in an interview that when he handed over the documents to Greenwald and Poitras, he thought nothing would come of it. That it would be forgotten and never get on the radar.

That isn't the case.

Sure, we have a long way to go, and the situation is much more nuanced than he makes it to be, but from his view, this is progress.

nabeelahmed13··on Show HN: Markov chains explained visually
This is at a tangent, but I'm a fresh CS undergrad and this simple explanation really hooked me.

So my question is, where can I find more of this stuff? MOOCs are tough to manage with university, but if I wanted to learn more about these mathematical concepts presented in an interesting way, where should I start looking?

I'm a tad bit indecisive about how good I am with CS theory but I know if I took the leap and mastered some basics I would enjoy it. Any recommendations will help.
