n_coats··on My really successful, unfundable, piece of shit startup I hate to love
Well put! (and a bit unusual to see such kindness in an HN comment haha)

Kudos to the author, best wishes for the future!

n_coats··on How do you validate an idea before you build it? Sell it
Sorry to hear about your experience. I've felt your pain and it can be terribly discouraging. Couldn't agree more with your thoughts.

Well done, good idea to offer the service in dosage manually and then identify what needs to be streamlined!
n_coats··on Who's willing to optimize the front-end our 1M pageviews/day website?
I'd be interested in taking a look at the project. Can you connect with me to offer some more insight? My info is in my profile. Thanks!
n_coats··on Ask HN: When did people start paying for your SaaS and why?
I've considered it. Looking around for some other options, or considering doing something organic with streaming api. Have any suggestions?
n_coats··on Ask HN: When did people start paying for your SaaS and why?
Wow, sounds like quite the experience. Seems like your in a good place now... so quick to squash any interpretations of being a canadian, eh?! haha Thanks for sharing and good luck!

n_coats··on Ask HN: When did people start paying for your SaaS and why?
Great! Same thing I've been doing with mine (http://sociostock.com) with regards to the lander. I've reviewed some landing page debates from the likes of 37signals, but was curious as to how often you altered your design and the effect it had on signups/conversions?
n_coats··on Ask HN: When did people start paying for your SaaS and why?
Awesome insight, Josh! Thanks for sharing!
n_coats··on Ask HN: When did people start paying for your SaaS and why?
Are you considering another venture? Did you learn anything form the experience?
n_coats··on Ask HN: When did people start paying for your SaaS and why?
Fantastic! Congrats, I think I'll pick up that read as well!
n_coats··on Ask HN: When did people start paying for your SaaS and why?
I see. Makes perfect sense. Congrats on your recent success, best wishes for the future!
n_coats··on Ask HN: When did people start paying for your SaaS and why?
Incredible! What did you find was the best way to access the decision makers in your niche? Sounds like you contacted them directly and met with them, but what type of marketing/promo did you do? Seems like your SaaS hit a tipping point somewhere between year 1 and 2 and really caught fire?
n_coats··on Ask HN: When did people start paying for your SaaS and why?
Very cool! Awesome to see you taking a specific focus and seeing results. How did you go about reaching your ideal market?
n_coats··on Ask HN: When did people start paying for your SaaS and why?
How many times did you try and in what markets?

I see your perspective regarding quality content in the sense that inquisitive founders/geeks may not be "qualified" to weigh in with your standard of "quality".

However, for some "inquisitive minds", discussion (flawed as it may be) yields insight and can create enough interest to further investigate a topic via "quality" sources. Of course there is erred content on HN, but it still provides an introduction for someone to determine whether or not they want to dig deeper into a subject from more credible perspectives.

n_coats··on Ask HN: What makes you go for it?
Yes, I think early release is critical. It keeps momentum and lets you hear feedback while you're still fresh in dev mode.
n_coats··on Ask HN: What makes you go for it?
Well put about the 80%-20% of work.
n_coats··on Ask HN: What makes you go for it?
Thanks for this great response! Really agree with the bit about about making it quick and resourceful. Kudos about not pulling teeth to convince people they have a problem you are solving. This is particularly difficult for many first timers and can be incredibly disheartening for some.

If I may, take a look through some of the bootstrap docs (both free and for-cost). They're amazing looking and incredibly simple to work with. If anything, some designs can provide you with styles to work off of.

n_coats··on Best Practices for Scraping/Data Mining and interpreting?
Twitter has an API that allows you to more or less scrape tweets.
n_coats··on Best Practices for Scraping/Data Mining and interpreting?
Would you suggest any specific scraping API's or API's for each source I'd like to scrape (granted they offer it)?
n_coats··on Best Practices for Scraping/Data Mining and interpreting?
I'm seeing a fair bit about node.js and bobik, has anyone ever worked with either framework?

n_coats··on Why my startup failed
Why do you think people resorted back to phone orders, etc? Did you have some type of recommendation component for users?

For example, when someone places a phone order (especially for wine), they may ask the associates preference or suggestions. It would be awesome if you had a program that took drinkers preferences into consideration and then suggested maybe 3-5 wines.

n_coats··on Why you shouldn't do what Aaron did
well put
n_coats··on Aaron Swartz commits suicide
Regardless of everything happening in his life, it's terrible in any instance when someone is pushed to the point where they rationalize taking their own life. Best wishes and thoughts to Aarons family and friends as they mourn during this horrible time.

Great post by Alex! Some cool bits there for sure!
n_coats··on Review my startup, Listnerd.com
I thought it was rad! I found value in some lists as well. I think you've got a lot of potential and hell, if you're about the experience and helping people discover, then keep rolling with it!

I must warn you though, I've been down a similar road relating to intention, all the while thinking in the back of my mind that I can somehow flip the switch and create monetary value. It didn't work like that.

If you're not being true to yourself with your motives for the sake of justifying where the project currently is, then take a step back and re-evaluate what you need to do to achieve your real motives/desires with the project. This is a personal suggestion stemming from my own experiences and is not meant to be offensive in anyway. Good luck!
