n_··on Epic, Spotify, and Tinder form advocacy group to push for app store changes
I think that’s where I have a problem with the policy.

I’d specify though, that it makes sense Apple would not allow developers to make the signup via web a work around, just to avoid paying Apple and still use my service through iOS.

However, if I block access to my service from native iOS apps until a user agrees to pay the 30% extra, that feels fair and still follows the spirit of the rules IMO.

Not letting me tell users what they are paying for, or why they can’t access my service on iOS until they cough up an extra 30%, that’s overreach.

Does Apple allow developers to just charge 30% more when users sign up through iOS, and just note in the app that access to the service though iOS costs more?

Seems fair to me, and let’s consumers know where the money is going (to Apple, presumably to pay for ecosystem things like app privacy and security reviews, billing, etc).

If users don’t like it, then the market will do it’s thing right?

It’s unclear to me what types of messaging Apple bans developers from adding though. Like is it ok with Apple for me to build an app available on web for a certain price, but block access via native iOS apps unless the user agrees to a 30% increase to cover the Apple tax?

I think this is what I would want to do if I operated a subscription service available via native app in the app store.

n_··on How to do a code review
Full disclosure, I work at Google, and I actually find positive comments mostly rare, but code review culture is very different team to team, so I can hardly speak for the entire company.

Personally I try to make them often, but I also try to be thoughtful about making them as to not come off patronizing like you mentioned.

Though I’ve never felt like a positive comment ever made me feel patronized in any situation, I think a good way to not come off patronizing is to to make the comment more personal than general, ie:

“This is a cool way to use the rest operator (or whatever thing), Ima steal this”.

Obviously it needs to be an authentic comment, but I think it’s a significant difference vs

“Great use of the rest operator!”

When the interpretation on the other end might be “oh so this person is surprised I know these basic language constructs”.

I learn things from doing code reviews all the time, and I like letting my coworkers know that I feel like I’ve gotten better at my job as a result of reviewing their contributions.

I think it’d be a shame if I didn’t let them know.

n_··on New York Times Co. Reports $24M Profit, Thanks to Digital Subscribers
I pay to support their journalism.

The amount that I consume is probably less than what requires a subscription, but I started paying because I can afford it, and I feel like it’s important for them to have resources to do what they do.

I like to think that if any future employers don’t enjoy my self-deprecating humor it probably won’t make a great fit anyway.

I used the site as an opportunity to roll my own static site generator for no reason. Bit of a whatever website, but it was a fun learning experience nonetheless.

n_··on Google bans cryptocurrency ads
I loved this tweetstorm, but I must say, it's never taken me weeks to take a BART trip, but it's definitely taken me weeks to clear a BTC transaction.

Like hey, BART isn't that bad.

n_··on Puerto Rico files for biggest ever U.S. local government bankruptcy

My mind immediately went to that too. Smh.
n_··on Why we should all have a basic income
This.

This is the biggest challenge to UBI becoming a serious mainstream topic in the United States IMHO. It takes me hours of conversation explaining UBI to any of my southern/conservative family members to get to a point where they at least acknowledge that it isn't just a fancy word for socialism... and even then they still don't like it.

Granted, I'm their left coast liberal silicon valley nephew so they aren't really interested in anything I have to say anyway.. but maybe thats the point. To a lot of Americans it just sounds like free liberal hand outs, no matter how much data/math/science/economics go into it.

Hopefully smarter people than I can figure out how to message UBI to that part of America.

This is the worst comment I've ever read on HN.
