n3on_net··on The 10,000-hour rule is wrong and perpetuates a cruel myth
Still, the concept of hard work beating talent without hard work is a very powerful one. You won't be the best but after such dedication and hard work, you will always achieve above average results in your area.

So, keep on hustlin!

n3on_net··on A response to “How to never complete anything”
"you have fucked up your priorities"

Different people have different priorities, so there is no such thing as generalized "fucked up priorities" if you don't know the priorities of the person.

n3on_net··on Ask HN: Books you read in 2016?
Here is my list of 2016:

- The Elegant Universe: Superstrings, Hidden Dimensions and the Quest for the Ultimate Theory

- The 48 Laws Of Power

- Freakonomics: A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything

- Crossing the Chasm

- The Richest Man in Babylon

- Confessions of an Economic Hit Man

- Europe: A History

- The Penguin History of Europe

- The Everything Store: Jeff Bezos and the Age of Amazon

- Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind

Every of the books was awesome. The only thing is that I haven't finished Europe: A History from Norman and read The Penguin History of Europe instead because the Norman book was just too long for me. But It has way more details.

I switch between business-related books and non-business related (it can be everything from philosophy to language history to hardcore science) but I don't read fiction (The Richest Man in Babylon is fictional, but still the focus is on self-development).

Hope you could see some titles that might interest you.

n3on_net··on The Web We Want
JavaScript is default technology. So it's like if you could disable C++ on windows and then complain that application don't work anymore.

JS is like HTML and CSS, core part of today's web.

Thanks, this is the aim. Still a long way to go. But first steps are already done!
n3on_net··on Show HN: Ceilfire.com – Online HTML5 Game Maker
The assets are stored on amazon S3 and I added CORS entries, but somehow there are still some issues. Thanks for testing!
n3on_net··on Show HN: Ceilfire.com – Online HTML5 Game Maker
Very good suggestion. At the moment ceilfire is not optimized for mobile, but it's definitely on the TODO list. Thanks for trying out.
n3on_net··on Show HN: Ceilfire.com – Online HTML5 Game Maker
Hi, thanks for trying out! Mobile is definetly on my TODO list, but at the moment it only works for Desktop machines.
n3on_net··on Show HN: Ceilfire.com – Online HTML5 Game Maker
Hi ghosh, yes it's made by me. But still in the early stage.

Technology used: NodeJS/MongoDB on the backend, vanilla JS on the front-end + PhaserJS as a game engine.

n3on_net··on Career opportunities
" At least here, in the South, your status still greatly depends on 1) if you managed to raise a family (single 40 years old ultra rich Corporate managers don't get much credit); 2) if you have a good network of friends (and people here don't look down at blue collars). "

A little bit offtopic:

Well, Italy is economically not at the top and South Italy even much worse. So, I just wonder if this is a healthy attitute.

Even on micro level: If you don't have ambitions besides friends/family, this is very sad. At least I couldn't imagine living like that.

There was an interesting quote from Max Levchin, can't find it, will edit later. It was something like this: "Interviewer: Why do you keep founding companies/push yourself? Levchin: Well, you sleep 8 hours a day. Then you play 2 hours with your children, spend 1 hour with your wife. Wtf do you do the remaining 13 hours?" This is actually a nice summary.

And this is the similar reason why people are defined by their education. It's just a small amount of years that elivate your value. It will be strange to miss the opportunity without a very good reason.

n3on_net··on Show HN: CodeHalf – Write Code Everyday, new design and new features
Awesome work. But I would prefer log-in/registration with own email/password combo. I hate 3rd party logins.

One alternative would be, and what worked for me, is a simple old school pomodoro tracker:

1: get pomodoro app/timer like http://tomato-timer.com/ 2: aim for 3 or so pomodoro sessions/day for your project or new thing you want to do or to learn 3: profit

Nice thing about pomodoro technique is that the distraction is already included. You focus 25 minutes and then have 5 minutes distraction time. It adds up for motivation if you know that you can have a break after a short perdiod of time.

n3on_net··on Social Engineering from Kevin Mitnick
I read all three of the Kevins books and like "Ghost in Wire" the most. It is a really nice and interesting biography.

If you want to have the other side of the story, then I would also recommend "Takedown" from John Markoff.

n3on_net··on How Jack Dorsey Runs Both Twitter, Square
"Now, why is it that some writers like to make CEOs look like gods? I wish there was a platform where you can rate writers based on their work. I'm pretty sure making them look like gods is very unhealthy for the community. Like doesn't these kind of articles piss you off?"

Why is this a bad thing? Becoming one like Dorsey or a CEO of huge company or simply a successful founder requires a certain mindset. A "growth" mindset at least, where you want to spend more hours for your passion (in this case business) than watching netfix. I think this mindset is pretty good. Working 18 hours a day doing your passion (And this is passion and not "work" for Dorsey or Musk) is much better than wasting your time away.

So there is nothing wrong with articles like this, showing only a normal day of people who like doing what they do.

n3on_net··on Ask HN: Books you read in 2015?
Very nice. How many hours per day do you read for 3-4 books/month?
n3on_net··on Ask HN: Books you read in 2015?
There are several books I read, still want to increase my reading amount:

1. "Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman!", nice bio about Feynman

2. "Elon Musk: Tesla, SpaceX, and the Quest for a Fantastic Future", inspiring biography and business book.

3. "Apollo" by Catherine Bly Cox. Awesome book about Apollo Programm. Goes even in some technical details.

4. "Mastering Bitcoin: Unlocking Digital Cryptocurrencies". Very good and thorough book about bitcoins, the author implements most import concept in the book.

5. "F'D Companies: Spectacular Dot-com Flameouts". I seldom don't recommend a book, but this one is hard to tell. It is interesting read about a lot of failed dot-com era companies. But the layout and writing style looks like an automatic rip-off of some blog articles (I read on kindle). It's not totally bad, but be warned before buying. Try some free chapters.

6. "Structures: Or Why Things Don't Fall Down", good layman general introduction into static. Nice overview why all the buildings/bridges etc around you don't fall apart.

7. "Never Eat Alone", Classics of networking. Actually basic stuff that people probably already know about networking. But still good to read, and author always shows examples on successful persons or himself.

8. "The Elegant Universe: Superstrings, Hidden Dimensions and the Quest for the Ultimate Theory", reading this at the moment. Very nice and simple introduction to relativity theory and quantum mechanics. I finished around 100 pages and like it.

I read 8 books this year. My aim is around 2 books/month.

Reading can make difference.

n3on_net··on Sheryl Sandberg Says an MBA Doesn't Matter in Tech
I wonder if she would still become COO of Facebook without Harvard MBA and all the oportunities resulted from it.

MBA is probably really not necessary, but if you have the oportunity to do one on a top school, it may open some doors and expand your network. At least it has no negative effects (if you can efford it).

Especially if you have technical background and want to move to management position. It simply diversifies your background and strengthens signaling.

n3on_net··on Show HN: Learn Chinese Through Novels
Nice app. I would also suggest http://lingq.com, it is similar but with a huge amount of content for every level. It has text for something like 10 languages, chinese included.

Other similar sites (but not so much content like lingq.com): http://readlang.com/ http://lingocracy.com/

n3on_net··on Ask HN: Are there startups that went open-source and succeed?
codecombat went opensource and this accelerated the growth. http://blog.codecombat.com/uid/137237
n3on_net··on Ask HN: What projects are you working on?
More or less. "Container" and "Commit" are probably not so good choices here because it doesn't create repositories for you. But yeah, it makes a lot of stuff automatically. At the end the editor creates a game JSON file that specifies everything in the game and is interpreted by the engine. But the enduser don't have to think about it.

The platform has three components. 1. game portal for playing/rating/commenting... of games 2. The assets market to find and/or share game assets and 3. the game editor

Basically the editor workflow is:

For every game you need game assets like graphics and sounds. You can upload your own assets or import assets which were shared in the community. Then using these assets you make gameobjects by grag&drop. You can define all kind of properties for the objects like velocity, animations and so so. To make interactions (e.g. fire where a key is pressed or play explosion animation on collision) you define event rules by selecting specific conditions and actions. By creating more of objects and rules you make your game. After your game is finished you can save it on the platform and/or import as android/ios file. But the MVP will allow only webgames in the beginning.

There are already a lot of great game editors, but I hate installing stuff or searching for the assets, so wanted something more integrated all in one place without entry barriers.

n3on_net··on Ask HN: What projects are you working on?
I'm working on a platform that allows everyone create HTML5 and mobile games directly in the browser without any programming knowledge. Still in a very early stage. First MVP will come in a month.
