mzhaase··on Norway Eyes Partial Ban of Smart Glasses
Dashcams are banned for example in Germany.
mzhaase··on cp: -r or -R?
Wow, 24 years of Linux, I never bothered to look it up. Thanks.
mzhaase··on So you think you could be an electrician?
It is in Germany for example, same as sysadmin and IT-Electrician. They all go to trade school. Personally found it a bit useless though.
mzhaase··on Agents don't need memory, they need documentation
I've done that too, called it Decisions. Was happy for a while, but then the agent started to make decisions longer and longer, putting "x, not y" in there. It started to write them without asking. Suddenly in code review it would say "violates D-236". Some rule it made up that I never approved. Then I made very clear that it should never touch those files. Still does. Now it's just context bloat.
mzhaase··on Agents don't need memory, they need documentation
Do agents actually follow it though? Everything I tried that was not just simple instructions had the same failure mode : ADR, mnemonic, hindsight, code-review-graph, etc were simply ignored by agents after a while. They always fall back to their baseline: grep and Python.
mzhaase··on Backblaze drive stats for Q2 2026
I remember back in the late nineties / early 2000s drive failures really were pretty common. During my childhood I think I had three. I've never had a catastrophic failure since then, really came a long way.
mzhaase··on Does Georgism work? Five years later
How many people do you personally know that live a better life today than 20 years ago?
mzhaase··on Does Georgism work? Five years later
Inflation does not hit everyone equally. Poorer people are disproportionately affected.
mzhaase··on We're gonna need a lot more mathematicians
This is so sad for me. What's humanities purpose? Generate shareholder value? Is this the best we can come up with?

We are destroying the planet and ourselves. There are a few things which we do that are just good in of themselves, which can inspire and proof that there is good. Friendly competition, exploration, art and understanding the world around us.

What world do we want to live in? And what are the kind of personalities that would be required for such a world? A thousand Picards or a thousand Musks?

mzhaase··on Unsealed Briefs in Authors’ Case v. Microsoft/OpenAI
This could go the star trek or dystopian route, and which way depends on who controls the models.

There is going to be a very shitty in between time where we still need blue collar, but no white collar labor. The amount of conflicts out of that will be insane. And who controls the news?

mzhaase··on MentalHealthBench
This seems to miss the point for me, therapy is a series of 20+ conversations, steered by the therapist.

Current LLMs would instead be steered by previous tokens, meaning the patient does. So someone that for example has schizophrenia may actually convince the LLM it's true.

mzhaase··on DeepSeek v4.1 Flash
I use this for automated bug triage, just gets all unique error messages every night and tries to find the bug, for this kind of work it's great.
mzhaase··on I resigned from Anthropic today
The danger for me is that it's centralized, controlled by a handful of people with their very specific ideas how the world should work. If you believe that AI can be an amplifier to do work than these people now have the most access to the biggest amplifier.
mzhaase··on On the Navier–Stokes Millennium Prize Problem
The singularity happening under trump? We could have had star trek, instead we're getting the combine.
mzhaase··on Why are European countries moving their gold out of North America?
As a European, that would change nothing for me. The issue is systemic disinformation, fundamental lack of empathy and all those echo chambers. As long as this exists, the current situation will repeat or get worse.
mzhaase··on U.S. sanctions against the A/I Collective
They're just anti-capitalist nerds, example, they host Linux user groups in a couple cities, collect computers for schools etc.
mzhaase··on Tragically, as many as 9625 out of every 10k individuals may be neurotypical
I got more things done in one week on ADHD meds than in the three months before that. And the only reason I went out to get a diagnosis was an ADHD meme community that constantly made me go "haha, that is so me".

If I got diagnosed 10 or 20 years earlier, I wouldn't have dropped out of university and my life would have been profoundly different and better.

mzhaase··on AI companies destroy physical books – let's scan rare books before it's too late
What you personally find important is not what everyone else finds important or inspiring. Destroying something takes it away from every single future human being.
mzhaase··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (August 2026)
Thank you!
mzhaase··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (August 2026)
It's an homage to cultist simulator, another card game, and inspiration. :) But looking at CTR vs conversion rate you might be right. Anyway, too late.
mzhaase··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (August 2026)
I'm working on Dictatorship Simulator. A deckbuilder where, instead of directly attacking your enemy, you manipulate a political simulation to do it for you. You start out on the fringe, and slowly work your way up, fighting an increasingly worried and panicky government - as well as your own.

mzhaase··on Man seeks millions after being shot by police in game-related swatting incident
How about firing them and sending them to jail?
mzhaase··on Exercise intensity influences body composition in healthy older adults (2025)
This is specifically cardio. High intensity interval training can be safe, for example, air bike, battle ropes, etc. High intensity running does have higher injury risk.
mzhaase··on Lore – Give your coding agent the decisions your team made
I have been doing this to great effect and it's maybe five lines instructions total.
mzhaase··on 45°C cooling design cuts data center water use to near zero
Evaporates and rains down in a different area which is not necessarily the same it evaporated in. Leading to potentially local net water loss.
mzhaase··on Millimeter wave technology drills 100 meters into granite
Maybe you could hook up a mass spectrometer to the purge gas to get real time composition.

Have custom slash commands in forgejo that spawn an agent using deepwhale which creates a branch, then commits and opens a PR when done.
mzhaase··on Claude Fable 5
I now chat with opus about architecture, let it make an implementation plan, and then it calls codewhale with deepseek in parallel on all tasks, reviewing their output. Works pretty well.
mzhaase··on HashiCorp co-founder says GitHub 'no longer a place for serious work'
Forgejo. Significantly faster than gitlab
mzhaase··on How Complex is my Code?
Something that I have started doing is to tell it to spawn a reviewer agent after every code change, and in the Claude/rules folder I specify exactly how I want stuff done.

Mostly I use it to write unit tests (just dislike production code that is not exactly as I want). So there is a testing rule for all files in the test folder that lays out how they should be done. The agent writing the tests may miss some due to context bloat but the reviewer has a fresh context window and only looks at those rules. So it does result in some simpler code.
