myth_buster··on Early employees take the most risk today
This is sadly the norm in non-software industry where IT is just a peripheral service rather than the core domain.

To add insult to injury, Software Engineers are treated as bunch of nerds who are replaceable.

myth_buster··on Early employees take the most risk today
Isn't the armed forces model relevant here, which also happens to fan out:

"Experienced" soldiers work on the strategy while
new recruits work in the trenches.

myth_buster··on How to know if where you live is “up and coming”: fried chicken vs. coffee shops

A physically draining job should keep one somewhat fit and healthy,
  after all.
Not necessarily, ex a waiter or a sales person would be drained by the end of the day but that doesn't make them fit and healthy.

Their children too, are obese - which really suggests that it's
  more of a culture issue.
There is a premium on healthy food while inexpensive food are fatty. "Organic produce" is multi-billion dollar industry.

The not so expensive meat that is available are frozen and/or have hormones & preservatives.

If you live off of "Dollar menu" you can't expect to be healthy. Most of the homeless are obese.

If I'm perpetually hungry the chances are that I'll eat food that will take longer to digest and in turn make me hungry lesser times during the day.

Poor on average take worse care of their health and fitness
I think it can be primarily attributed to the low income jobs being more physically and emotionally draining which result in them being sapped by the time they reach home.

This can also be witnessed in the amount of nurture they can provide to their offspring. An interesting argument in one of the Quora thread about being rich was that financial freedom let's them have the flexibility to spend more time with their kids.

myth_buster··on Square files for IPO

We generated net losses of $85.2 million, $104.5 million, and $154.1 million
in 2012, 2013, and 2014, respectively. As of December 31, 2014, we had an
accumulated deficit of $395.6 million. For the six months ended June 30, 2015,
we generated a net loss of $77.6 million. As of June 30, 2015, we had an
  accumulated deficit of $473.2 million.
Could someone explain the motive to go public while operating in the losses? Isn't the public market more averse to companies operating in the negative.

Also wouldn't the timing act more as a distraction for Jack?

myth_buster··on Facebook Reactions
How about 9
myth_buster··on Facebook Reactions
Would just clicking on the "Like" button consider it as like or would the users have to hold press and select "Like"?

If someone has already selected "Wow", "Sad" or something similar, it perhaps would be useful to just click on the icon next to aggregation rather than doing the long-press behavior.

I suppose on the desktop site, perhaps mouseover may show the reactions.

I think overall it requires more effort on the user's part as opposed to just clicking on the like button and moving on. Which perhaps was the reason for the like button's initial success.

myth_buster··on 'Extreme poverty' to fall below 10% of world population for first time
I'm not questioning their intelligence just their approach.

well-respected development organizations are made up of smart people
that know what they are doing
Well, that was the thought about the financial industry, FCC, S&P etc before 2007.
myth_buster··on 'Extreme poverty' to fall below 10% of world population for first time
I'm always wary of the numbers that are put out. There has been long history of fudging numbers to fit a narrative. The unemployment numbers in the US comes to mind as such an example.

So, the question is how realistic is the extreme poverty line. And this doesn't help it much:

The World Bank first introduced a global poverty line in 1990,
setting it at $1 a day.
It was adjusted last in 2008, when the group raised it to $1.25 a day.
$1 seems like such a convenient number to pick!

An interesting graph will be to plot the extreme poverty threshold against inflation _in_emerging_countries_.

With the falling emerging market currencies and extreme inflation (hyper-inflation perhaps), I don't think that $1.90 a day cuts it.

myth_buster··on YC Research
I'm not saying Google came up with 15/20% culture, all I'm saying is that they got some benefit from it just like Xerox got.
myth_buster··on YC Research
Glad to hear that! Some of his thoughts really resonated with me although they run counter to the current corporate research culture.

I think Google managed to recreate something similar with their 20% projects

myth_buster··on YC Research
Apparently not.

YCR is a non-profit. Any IP developed will be made available freely to everyone.

We’re not doing this with the goal of helping YC’s startups succeed or
  adding to our bottom line.

This thread [0] from couple of days back on Alan Kay's views on recreating Xerox PARC seems relevant.

myth_buster··on What’s in a Boarding Pass Barcode?

Interested in learning what’s in your boarding pass barcode?

Woah! We are talking about private information being easily accessed from our boarding passes and there is a passage on uploading it to some site online. Wouldn't that be ill-advised.

The whole Instagram ecosystem is a testament to the need for phone camera!

Additionally, given that most people only have their phone cameras with them and don't invest in SLRs/Mirrorless/Compact cameras, the need for good quality for preserving their memories seems important.
