mystifyingpoi··on Pixel 11 doesn't yet meet the GrapheneOS security standards and may be skipped
I know it's not really an argument, but I tend to change my devices also every 2-3 years, just so I can pass the "old" one to my less technical family.
mystifyingpoi··on Pixel 11 doesn't yet meet the GrapheneOS security standards and may be skipped
I have Pixel 9a and considered Pixel 10 for a while, but seeing Pixel 11 show up with absurdly microscopic improvements over 10 made me realize, that this smartphone line is just a solved problem since years ago.
mystifyingpoi··on Sites in ChatGPT
Pretty sure if you give Claude your AWS keys, it will easily deploy the stock CloudFront setup in minutes. But that's not as seamless.
mystifyingpoi··on Gemini 4 Argon
> I tried the DIY provider agnostic harness thing and it performs like shit

Just ask AI to make it perform not like shit. /s

mystifyingpoi··on Singapore govt dating app uses Gale-Shapley stable marriage algorithm
Exactly. Using a dating app is just asking for being lied to.

Also, the whole concept of finding your significant other by ONLY going out on dates is... kinda broken in concept? It's not really that hard to pretend to be someone else for a few hours a week.

mystifyingpoi··on Pirating the Pirates
Almost exactly first half of Inception is the setup and worldbuilding before the actual main heist begins. So that could explain why.
mystifyingpoi··on PipePipe: NewPipe hard fork implementing SponsorBlock
Your experience is strange, I use the official Chrome (not Chromium) with uBlock Lite and everything works perfectly (except the 5s delay at the start).
mystifyingpoi··on Owners mourn spoiled food after firmware update bricks Samsung smart fridges
Well, they saved Pied Piper in the end. So maybe it was worth it :P
mystifyingpoi··on I don't like passkeys
So if I drop my phone to the toilet, I will forever lose access to everything? Since the vault is on my phone.
mystifyingpoi··on I don't like passkeys
> how do I log in on a device that I don't own?

Sad reality is that such usecase is less and less common, thus, no one cares about it. I think majority of my friends would not be able to access their email, or facebook or alike, if they were forced to use my computer in emergency.

mystifyingpoi··on Show HN: Share your AI Setup, Learn from others
That's a fair judgement, thanks. Sure - if we consider the entire economy, then it is definitely true that more collaborative companies will outcompete companies full of self-centered monks. I am only considering the local situation, and I certainly hear similar voices from friends at many other organizations.

People think that job security means "I'm unfirable god and king". What it really means is "I am sitting comfortably mid-low on a sorted to-fire candidate list, if it needs to happen at some point for some reason".

Two years ago, I'd consider this attitude as ungrateful. Today, this attitude is 100% correct and I slowly start to be like that.

People might think I'm a dick, I don't care, my tools, my knowledge, my job security. I actually recently thought of nuking the entire IaC setup and go back to shell scripts on random virtual machines. Too bad that Claude can figure things like that out pretty easily. Well, the world sucks now.

mystifyingpoi··on The same nine streaming subscriptions cost $702/year more than in 2021
Subscribe, screengrab what you like, unsubscribe. Repeat. Really easy to do in a virtual machine, so it doesn't conflict with anything else happening on the computer.
mystifyingpoi··on Show HN: The same nine streaming subscriptions cost $702/year more than in 2021
Easy, just make kids pay for these, if they need them this much.
mystifyingpoi··on De-Brainrot Vacations
> vacation after their vacation

Having a family, the best rest for me is the 2-3 days when I'm back at work after vacation. No kids running around, no need to plan anything, just slowly going through hundreds of already irrelevant emails, pretending to do something productive, sipping coffee while telling everyone that I'm "catching up, sorry, can't help ya".

mystifyingpoi··on Cloud in a Bottle: making self-hosting accessible to everyone
Precisely. My uncle has been using the builtin Samsung web browser for years on his phone, just because it said "Internet" in the name, and "Chrome" just wasn't a familiar name to him. Most people are like this.
mystifyingpoi··on Audacity 4.0
Reaper install is 13 megs. I have no idea how is this possible today.
mystifyingpoi··on You Know Who Hates AI? Insurance Claims Adjusters
You are mixing up "being an asshole" with "doing abuse". Ordering 10 t-shirts and returning 9 of them could be classified as assholery (subjectively, I'd classify it as that), while it's very likely not abuse, we'd have to check the ToS of a specific seller.
mystifyingpoi··on Google Antigravity introduces Boost deep reasoning (/boost)
All these /boost, ultracode and other magic incancations seem to be just "throw more money/tokens at the problem and maybe it helps".
mystifyingpoi··on Bug Blindness
No, when they hit a problem with Windows, they blame Microsoft and/or their hardware. When they hit a problem with Linux, they blame the person that recommended it to them.
mystifyingpoi··on Bug Blindness
Matches my experience. I think that 98% of the people that used our software were using only 2-3 battle-tested happy paths, and just never hit any bugs, not because there weren't any (there were hundreds of bugs in JIRA spanning 3+ years of development) but simply they didn't trigger the non-hot code path ever.

The software was crap, but it made money, so it wasn't crap.

mystifyingpoi··on Tailcat – Like netcat, but over Tailscale’s data plane
> In the case of tailscale the added value seems to be avoiding going into your router and activating port forwarding?

Well, ignoring the tone... kinda yeah? I mean, if port forwarding works for you, and you have public IPv4, and you have no CGNAT, and you need a connection only between 2 hosts, then port forwarding is actually a half-decent idea. However, it's not what Tailscale excels at.

mystifyingpoi··on Tailcat – Like netcat, but over Tailscale’s data plane
> pain in the ass to configure it

Idk? I found it pretty easy to configure by blindly following the tutorials and copy-pasting keys. The only footgun is the keepalive setting, which will screw up the tunnel if one end is behind NAT, that tripped me hard, but besides this, no issues at all.

mystifyingpoi··on There's no such thing as a small software team anymore
> Fire up a coding agent for each one, tell it to “improve performance”, and there’s a good chance you ship significant improvements across all of them.

But I can do this like what, once or twice? Maybe once every release? Then my agents finish "improving performance" and it's Monday 10am. What the fuck I'm supposed to do the rest of the week?

mystifyingpoi··on Remote workers report the highest well-being in study of 7,700 employees
I find it easier. In the office a boss can stop me and ask to stay late, a coworker might ask question at 4:59pm, etc. When wfh, literally no one can stop me from closing the work laptop.
mystifyingpoi··on For the love of god stop using CPU limits in Kubernetes
Exactly on point. Shit happens, performance bugs appear, someone messes up Kafka config and it starts consuming from the beginning of the world, etc. Limiting CPU is a must. I could see maybe if someone has a super good monitoring + oncall response team, then letting things go loose for a bit is a lesser evil than working out limits, but still.
mystifyingpoi··on What I love about Django
Unironically, AI could automate the boycott.
mystifyingpoi··on Atlassian Rovo Exfiltrates Data, Bypassing Controls
That's some hillarious misnaming, I love it. It probably was meant to be something like "make more comprehensible, use simpler language but more words" and we got this.
