mysterydip··on US killer's sentence quashed because of AI video of victim shown in court
“Rather than document an event or recording a particular moment, the AI video presents a depiction of the victim and his thoughts created from the imaginings of the victim's sister," the court of appeals wrote on Wednesday.

The issue is it’s not real testimony one way or the other, it’s a fabrication. And allowing it is opening the door for all kinds of things. I think it’s the right move.

mysterydip··on I Quit OpenAI Because Its Culture Is Broken
Yeah, I wasn’t intending to make judgement in this instance one way or another, rather I was rephrasing the original comment for clarification.
mysterydip··on Barcodes are about to go extinct
Only if it hits the Meteoric region of France, otherwise it’s just sparkling rock :)
mysterydip··on I Quit OpenAI Because Its Culture Is Broken
It’s that they didn’t have concerns about the ethics of a company for the years working there until they were financially secure
mysterydip··on Your Big Mac might cost more if McDonald's AI thinks people nearby can afford it
For some skeptical reason, I only see this raising prices when demand increases, not lowering it beyond a base “regular” amount.
mysterydip··on Ask HN: What are you reading?
I just finished Scott McCloud’s Understanding Comics and it had so many “aha” moments for me. Definitely recommended if you have even a passing interest in reading or making graphic novels or comics.
mysterydip··on Pentium II at 600Mhz with Voodoo 3 Emulated on 86Box with M6 Mac Mini
I think part of the reason it holds up still is things had to be designed for newcomers at the time, since people largely were.
mysterydip··on Anthropic: The Situation Report
> it's very critical to move with speed and accuracy

Traditionally one of the weak points with this tech has been accuracy, are there new techniques to increase or verify the validity of the dashboards being generated?

mysterydip··on The "Windows XP Box" (2003)
I used to love the mini-itx form factor. For the time, lots of features in a compact space. I think micro atx might be a more popular form factor now?
mysterydip··on What to do when your Waymo holds up a Secret Service motorcade
> Said assistance was activated within seven seconds but was escalated to a team that deals with emergency personnel — hence the delay.

Shouldn’t emergency escalation be an immediate response, rather than a delay? Do they not have enough people to handle the amount of emergencies they receive?

mysterydip··on Show HN: Conway's Game of Life in boot sector
One of my favorite simulations! Thanks for sharing, hope the journey was enjoyable and you do more.

Love the use of VGA memory for the simulation grid. Were you able to double buffer, or how did you handle holding the previous state while processing the next one?

mysterydip··on An update on how we confirm your age group on Discord
There’s secondary effects from not using their platform to consider as well. There’s several applications (open and closed source) I used recently that moved all their support (email/forums) to discord.
mysterydip··on 'We hacked the FBI:' Hackers say they have data on all FBI employees
How do we know the models are writing memory-safe code? How will people who haven’t written it audit the output?

“Bob is a person and can make mistakes” but we still hold them accountable (generally). But I assume all the AI have licenses with terms similar to (from the MIT license):

mysterydip··on AI-generated posters don’t have to be horrible
Isn’t the most overused trope the most statistically weighted to be chosen from a group of options? It makes technical sense but as you say leads to boring outcomes
mysterydip··on Google illegally retains customer data, and I am taking legal action against them
> Google’s own developer (Lalit_Kumar, 2025) wrote that the chat is actually not the JSON file in Drive, but only metadata. Due to the loss of the metadata, AI Studio “does not recognize” the chat — but this is not a deletion.

This is like deleting a shortcut and saying the file is gone, right?

mysterydip··on Recreating Voodoo Graphics and a Late-1990s Gaming PC on an FPGA
I hadn’t thought of that possibility but it would indeed be fantastic!
mysterydip··on How much oil-market buffer is left?
I’m really tempted by current sienna hybrids, my current gas one gets 20mpg on a good day. Plug-in for the daily school commutes and after school activities would be great
mysterydip··on How much oil-market buffer is left?
It doesn’t seem irrational if their friends/family/donors have investments in the incumbent energy systems.
mysterydip··on Ask HN: Anyone still coding like 2021? Where do you work?
As the saying goes, “the best time to start would have been 10 years ago. The second best time is today”
mysterydip··on Ask HN: Anyone still coding like 2021? Where do you work?
The code we write here is all human-generated. There’s been an initiative to explore LLM usage. So far it’s been in a reviewer role only, as in “here’s some things I found that you could fix”, and then humans discuss each one and determine if it’s valid and how to fix it.

Also one of my domains is in microcontrollers and using specific hardware that needs bit-banging drivers written for, so it’s unlikely any LLM has enough data to write those things itself.

mysterydip··on Claude, change the “Add to Cart” button to blue
Which also explains why response speed is so important.
mysterydip··on OUI-1: world's first model for Generative UI
> Interfaces must be generated in under a second

Why? Is two seconds too long? Would your other constraints be easier (usability and hardware spec) if this was longer? Does anyone actually need a UI generated in under a second?

mysterydip··on Elevator of the Year Winner Modernization of the Metropolis Trust Building
Oh, definitely. I just saw a funny parallel with projects even today, where something is done to make something work at the time (and we’ll make it better later), and later never arrives.
mysterydip··on Elevator of the Year Winner Modernization of the Metropolis Trust Building
“this is just temporary,” said the construction worker in 1907
mysterydip··on Elevator of the Year: Modernization of the Metropolis Trust Building
My first thought was “there’s an elevator of the year award?” but reading it was fascinating. A lot of planning and work went into executing that modernization project from what was originally a fairly unique system. And 45-50% energy savings per year is a great ROI.
mysterydip··on 120 days until Google restricts side-loading, declaring war on Android freedom
(warning dumb question incoming): since android apps are java, is it possible for a third contender to create a jvm for their platform and some hooks for android api’s and run anything that was made for them?
mysterydip··on Japan halves speed limit to 30km/h on all narrow city streets
I agree overall, with the caveat that it really depends on the infrastructure available and sprawl. I had flown in to a city late at night, and all the subways and busses had stopped for the night. My only option was a taxi or stay at the airport.
mysterydip··on Japan halves speed limit to 30km/h on all narrow city streets
Back in the early 00s my host family had an imported left hand drive chevy blazer, and it felt enormous there. I can only imagine in the years since how ridiculous it would be with ballooning SUV sizes.
mysterydip··on ReactOS 0.4.16
Looks like a lot of improvements on long-standing hard-to-find issues. Kudos to the team and thank you for providing an alternative OS that keeps getting better
