mynameisvlad··on macOS Golden Gate Is a Buggy Mess
This. I stopped reading about halfway through when I realized they were almost all minor nitpicks or personal opinions. The others seem to be corner or edge cases and judging by how nitpicky the author was with the others, probably required going out of one's way to reproduce.

So then... Just do that and it's no longer reckless.

If someone wants to be reckless they can be. If someone doesn't, they also have that ability.

> The final major downside is having to switch apps out of navigation to control music then switch back,

But... you don't. Tapping on the home button once more or swiping to the right on the app page reveals the home screen which has navigation and music together:

mynameisvlad··on U.S. government will decide who gets to use GPT-5.6
Nobody denies or even claimed that.

Just as a reminder, the claim (only two comments ago) was that it will never reach people and be limited only to certain government-approved companies.

The press release pretty clearly outlines the next steps that will eventually get it into people's hands.

That is the claim that is being refuted. Nothing about the obvious government overreach happening here. You are the one that decided to bring that in as a strawman.

mynameisvlad··on U.S. government will decide who gets to use GPT-5.6
From the OpenAI press release:

> We don’t believe this kind of government access process should become the long-term default. It keeps the best tools from users, developers, enterprises, cyber defenders, and global partners who need them. We are taking this short-term step because we believe it is the strongest path to broader availability in the coming weeks, while we work with the Administration to develop the cyber Executive Order framework and a repeatable process for future model releases.

It seems like the exclusion is temporary. There is no process for individual users to get access to the new model _right now_.

I'm not exactly sure what your point is.

This has always been the case considering Microsoft made the encryption itself.

You can save your recovery key in different formats (printed, on a USB stick, etc). The online recovery is just automatic.

mynameisvlad··on Malware developers added nuclear and biological weapons text to to their spyware
I would argue that preventing instructions for making biological and nuclear weapons is a pretty reasonable guardrail to have.

mynameisvlad··on Astronauts told to return to ISS after sheltering over air leak repairs
100% and it has regularly happened in the past as live updates change the current state. Things like service status/degradation is a big one that comes to mind which is almost the same.
mynameisvlad··on The desperation of NYTimes
Marketing emails are send to existing and new paying customers all the time, it's exceptionally strange that that is the line you decide to use to determine if something is marketing or not.

Once again, regardless how you want to try and spin it, nobody signs up for a 14 day marketing campaign willingly, and subscribing is in no way shape or form an indicator of said acceptance. Most people would bat multiple eyelashes at any service that claims that is a transactional email and some might even be so put off they don't decide to subscribe or, like the author, are so frustrated that they'll likely unsubscribe because of said marketing spam. That right there is already indicative of how helpful and necessary these emails are.

Not sure why this is the hill you're deciding to die on but this ain't it.

mynameisvlad··on Astronauts told to return to ISS after sheltering over air leak repairs
The point of the rule is to not editorialize, not to keep an always-updating title.
mynameisvlad··on Astronauts told to return to ISS after sheltering over air leak repairs
It has "Live Updates" in big bold text as one of the first and most prominent lines on the page so... yes? Is that a problem?

Publications have had live-updating articles for things ongoing for years. This seems both entirely reasonable and normal, and I'm not sure what the concern or issue is.

mynameisvlad··on The desperation of NYTimes
A transactional message is something like "Thank you for signing up" or "Your password was changed" once per transaction. Hence, transactional.

Regardless how much they and you want to spin it, this is a 14 day marketing campaign. A single transaction (ie. subscribing) should not result in 14 emails sent. And certainly not one a day. By that logic I can send you unlimited emails because you bought one thing from me once and somehow consider all of them "transactional".

mynameisvlad··on The desperation of NYTimes
What is transactional about a daily message for 14 days? Especially when you haven't made a transaction to trigger said message?
mynameisvlad··on I built a vulnerable app and spent $1,500 seeing if LLMs could hack it
That is a completely separate question and discussion.
mynameisvlad··on VoidZero Is Joining Cloudflare
What promises? The announcement for BastionZero was quite clear as to what would happen:

> The BastionZero team will be focused on integrating their infrastructure access controls directly into Cloudflare One. During the third and fourth quarters of this year, we will be announcing a number of new features to facilitate Zero Trust infrastructure access via Cloudflare One. All functionality delivered this year will be included in the Cloudflare One free tier for organizations with less than 50 users. We believe that everyone should have access to world-class security controls.

Did you expect them to continue running their own service when it was pretty evident their work would be integrated into CF's zero trust suite?

mynameisvlad··on I built a vulnerable app and spent $1,500 seeing if LLMs could hack it
I mean, yes. Most people aren’t security researchers, and either way it’s apples to oranges at that point if you’re counting “the guardrails stopped me” as a negative for one but not the other.
mynameisvlad··on I built a vulnerable app and spent $1,500 seeing if LLMs could hack it
It seems harsh to critique guardrails and take them into account in the scoring when GPT-5.5 seems to have been explicitly whitelisted to remove most of said guardrails. A more fair comparison would be a vanilla GPT account.

So… You’re trying to hide spam by making it seem like human interaction.

That doesn’t address the actual issue with these messages… which is that they’re still spam, regardless how you try and dress them up.

mynameisvlad··on Launch HN: Chert (YC P26) – Twilio for iMessage
Not even the worst reading of their reply would lend to that implication.

It’s pretty obvious that they meant that anyone who depended on their service would/should probably run away kicking and screaming if they were looking for a dependable service that will do what they claim to in the long term.

If they were Apple sanctioned, then at least you’d have some reassurance that the service won’t die randomly one day when Apple has had enough, à la Beeper.

You can set up recovery keys at any point in time, not just at creation. Just because people don't do it doesn't mean it isn't and hasn't been available for almost 2 decades.
