Self described maestro at trolling stupidity with common sense and a second rate hacker. On the lookout for interesting people, companies, or opportunities -- it's subjective if my past comments can satisfy somebody's definition of the no asshole rule.

I like algos and I hate learning interfaces or dealing with unnecessary rigor. Basically, I'm lazy.

If you are working on large scale fraud detection and need someone pathologically motivated but with no experience I go by myaso on keybase. If you are an expert on algorithmic coding theory I also may want to pick your brain at some point. Actually if you have something interesting to say just do so.

It's HN, it's like a mandatory one liner to toss out -- the equivalent to "that's what she said" on here. A healthy diet of HN reinforces the reality from a couple of years ago when things actually seem to look more and more barren with actual opportunities scarcer than ever. But the answer is the idea that these words represent in the heads of the people who spout them doesn't actually reflect what it means in practice.

That's the price you pay for having a big country, there are quite a few benefits you enjoy from this -- carve it up into more easily manageable jurisdictions or deal with it. A bigger fraction of your tax dollars being absorbed by the bureaucracy in the US compared to let's say Canada or Estonia isn't something that can be changed -- your Congress doesn't seem to have an appetite for trimming waste or implementing responsible oversight. How is the Great Wall of Trump doing btw? ;)

Doing what is right isn't the same as "good feels" -- does conceding your own personal self interests on behalf of a group feel good? Trying to empty the ocean with a bucket is "good feels". You present a theoretical reason against a system that works already in other jurisdictions -- this is not some far off space age shit with flying saucers, it can be done and if done and it functions well enough will improve the lives of A LOT of people.

Is medical care something people need? That's how you tell if the government needs to provide it or subsidize it -- the market like US politics has schizophrenia which doesn't lead to a terribly efficient mechanism for allocating certain resources - it's great at giving people what they want. The right will come around eventually and maybe it will a little harder since there is a larger population to draw from to form a critical mass of stupidity. You just need to wait for the entrenched living carcasses that have been in the game since the 70's & 80's to die out gradually before anything will really change -- I will bet anything this is why kings and emperors were convinced to drink mercury.

That territory is the price for being in bed with the Germans -- it's like people conveniently seem to forget why it is so; my mother likes to talk about history when she has had too much wine, it's surprising there is anything left between Stalingrad and Berlin -- I still get mistaken for being Jewish which is ironic considering Jews didn't exist in the region I'm from after around 1944 - also about 25% to 30% of the civilian population. Given how much a pain in the ass the Winter War was (my grandfather volunteered for the Red Army in the 1930s) somebody likely decided it simply wasn't worth it at some point to have the Scandinavian countries be part of the USSR -- has it really worked out that bad in the end? Best of both worlds between capitalism/socialism and widely regarded as a region people want to live in.
myaso··on A.I. And Big Data Could Power a New War on Poverty?
This is an utter fantasy. Small scale limited scope tools being rolled out to augment diagnosis -- Yes. AI doctors -- No :( Also the data is probably mostly shit -- physicians are fallible and like all people potentially incompetent or negligent -- these trends would be reflected in whatever historical data is used, that inefficiency would simply be made much faster with automation -- which is why they will try it first in India before it is ever approved on Western soil.

On the other hand a RL system that pokes and prods a living persons brain with electrified needles and uses a conv net to watch for feedback from the resulting facial expressions is completely possible -- with enough training experience anybody could convince me of anything using it. One 30 second session to ensure a lifetime of compliance and happiness -- the promotional material can have a guy drinking a glass Kool-Aid with a look of tranquil bliss on his face.

myaso··on A.I. And Big Data Could Power a New War on Poverty?
This is load of reasonable sounding horseshit. This tech is excellent at extracting every drop of potential value that flows through organization boundaries and little else (self driving cars aren't reality yet, when my mother is in a self driving car my opinion will change) The thought of an online system that can do this being bolted onto government IT systems on this scale is hilarious, the bottleneck here isn't knowledge of AI or deep learning. It is an idealistic future that fails to take into account all the shit it will have to be built upon. I'll interpert the title in it's literally sense -- another way for the poor to get fucked over by something they don't understand!

This Singapore comment needs to die before someone else ever repeats it again. Lee Hsien Loong (2004-now) is the son of Lee Kuan Yew (1965-1990) -- compensation has nothing to do with it in this case. Past a certain compensation range you are selecting for greed and nothing else -- if you earn in the top 10% and can't make do I seriously doubt you are 'intelligent' or your children must eat a lot and you have my sympathies.
myaso··on NSA’s top talent is leaving because of low pay, flagging morale, unpopular reorg
Who knows what the future will bring -- on a 10 to 20 year horizon anything can happen. US prestige is waning and China's role is growing. Middle East is all fucked up and so is most of Africa. Russia will do something if somebody does something stupid in Belarus. North Korea is a wildcard, and of course there is Israel too. Being vigilant doesn't hurt. There are plenty of rats in sewers left too -- people just choose not to see them when it isn't convenient. Information flows faster now and is globally accessible so that helps to dampen things somewhat.
myaso··on NSA’s top talent is leaving because of low pay, flagging morale, unpopular reorg
The populations of these countries is significantly smaller than the US. Apples and oranges dude, things are always simpler when your bureaucracy doesn't have to cover 330m people -- you get a combinatorial explosion from all the additional interests and incentives with a larger population. Your points sound like they come from a bad econ textbook or a collation from poor reporting -- I know I heard them somewhere before.
myaso··on NSA’s top talent is leaving because of low pay, flagging morale, unpopular reorg
Most places don't work like IT where workers have easily transferable skills across a large market -- getting rid of somebody who you can't easily replace is not rational, suboptimal is better than none. It's not the people it's the organization and incentives around it that matter -- things get really complicated in larger orgs and systems of orgs. In your post it's like there is an easy and clear cut solution to this. You do understand that in an organization you take orders top down or you have a lack of information at the lower levels to make a decision right? You get what you measure and no rank and file employee controls that process + career progression depends on adherence to whatever incentive structure is set up before you started. Also hard as it is to believe, governments don't deal in stupid little apps that are based around some gimmicks. Quality is hard to measure, either you set up an arbitrary hoop for people to jump through or do it based on past performance which is almost completely tied to the environment -- which coincidentally dictates what problems are available to work on which also coincidentally dictates the skills you develop; it's not like implementing a ranking system is a perfect art either. I'm not a fan either of how things are, I know more about the pharmaceutical procurement process and pharma regulations than I ever wanted to.

Sure it's technically possible. If you were a woman would you want to have sex with Henry Kissinger?

Drugs, alcohol, and whores are cheap compared to the value you can extract from people using them. This article was fun to read; there have been lots of hit pieces coming out this year on SV, can't say it's undeserved either. Nothing here is shocking or unexpected, pederasty would be shocking -- no names which takes a whole lot of fun out of it for the spectators.

How would take the guns out of circulation already? There are millions of them out there and a whole tribe of diehards who will never give them up, and on top of this an entire industry around it -- the amount of people that die from this problem isn't worth the political capital and sustained decision maker attention needed to push this through compared to everything else that could be done using the same limited bandwidth.

Out of curiosity what is the state of the art today for extracting text or other data from scanned documents (forms, legal docs, receipts, etc) ?

How is keeping data local a good idea? Given how often there is a major breach reported, everything points to this being the opposite -- there aren't enough security specialists to go around for every company. Why not take advantage of the work done by the major cloud providers or SaaS companies instead of redoing everything in house all the time. It's like people want to actually solve the same problems over and over for eternity.

You have a problem discovering people in real life if you have niche interests -- I was talking to a gay grad student and he explained how isolating it is outside major cities. Relying on organic social dynamics to do their job will get you nowhere. The chief concern for projects like this is can they gain enough traction to be useful. Also it's unhealthy to have expectations of absolute privacy, in private communication you rely that the contents are not leaked from one party -- with data driven platforms you give a little piece of information in return for a service. Hell, half the businesses on here can only work because it's possible to market to niche groups and for niche interests. This is peacetime if you ignore what is effectively a low intensity conflict for the West happening in the Middle East. If the country you are living in was mobilized for war you would have zero expectations for anything, individual concerns of autonomy are irrelevant at that point and with very good reason -- no gains made for individual privacy would remain in that situation anyways. The 'secret police' doesn't care since they are concerned with the willing and unwilling agents of other countries 'secret police' -- there are plenty of targets to fry before they ever bother with you, aiding and abetting their primary concerns is a quick way to move yourself up the list.
myaso··on Ask HN: Any open source code/materials on predicting future crimes based on data?
Take a look at crimereports.com. You might get lucky and find a good source on a per city or county basis, it's too fragmented overall too try this. Different countries might have different documentation standards and publishing guidelines for this kinda of data, might be worth a shot to look.

Swartz is dead. Nobody to rally behind now, no real leaders. Online communities are older and more mainstream and are getting ossified. Much more brutal competition in the web space now, can't afford to voluntarily bleed + content is no longer special if someone doesn't get their fix in 5 minutes now they go somewhere else; ethics and values cost money and lots of people in this field have neither now. Lots of people running around in tech that don't share our views ever since 'tech' went mainstream around 2012/2013. What would a black out accomplish? The people in power don't give a fuck as far as I can tell regardless of how much public outage can be generated. Maybe we will finally get mesh networking out of this.
myaso··on Ask HN: What tech were you convinced would take the world by storm but didn't?
Likely will happen at some point. It's the next logical extension of consumer devices after the smart phone. It will happen eventually, except there isn't a clear time table as to when. The concept is general purpose enough that interesting things can be done with it.
myaso··on Why do we care more about benefit ‘scroungers’ than billions lost to the rich?
There is nothing to manage at least from the perspective of monetary assets, things would disappear too fast for you have a chance to 'manage' them; also it's the opposite, the poor are very efficient with the limited resources they have -- you kinda have to be wouldn't you? Lest you end up from just being poor to being a corpse. Below a certain breakpoint money only functions as a means of consumption. With what they are bringing in they will never be able to save enough to make any investments that will have a net positive in their lives and a negative shock will very quickly wipe out whatever progress they make. From their perspective it is actually logical to buy lottery tickets and gamble since the price of admission is low enough for them to afford; the calculus for them is shifted in a way that is different from your experiences. When you have an abundance of resources you are in a completely different position since you don't need to be concerned with survival anymore -- also you get many chances since your eggs won't end up in the same basket. It's not impossible but the chances that somebody who is poor can execute the process for a legitimate means of making money outside whatever formal arrangement they are in as opposed to brewing meth (which can be considered a 'side project' depending on your frame of mind) is unlikely given the context they find themselves in. The prior statements also hinge upon the unlikely event that someone can escape the cess pit of proletariat culture in the first place. It's structured to be this way, the range of choices somebody can make at the bottom of the socio economic ladder is much more restricted -- why do you think there are such stringent drug and prostitution laws in certain places? It's to reduce the actions that poor people can take outside the game that a relatively small group collectively decided we need to play -- when you reduce people's agency enough you can get them to do absolutely anything through a 'legit' channel: like taking a bullet to the head in some far off country, doing back breaking work in a kitchen, or something else that is equally unpleasant. A certain fraction of the population needs to be meat for the grinder to do it's job.
myaso··on I poured my blood, sweat and life savings into my restaurant. It ruined my life.
Agreed again. Starbucks coffee being over roasted is a common complaint, also I find the atmosphere unappealing usually. Most coffee shops I frequent have to hit the sweet spot of having decent coffee + price and being a pleasant place to work while having access to reliable wifi -- for me that turned out to be the local supermarket, I get real ambient noise as well without having music being blasted over speakers all the time. The trick I found is to look for places where people want to hold conversations in public; I often see Arab immigrants gathering to converse, local meetings proceeding, retirees conversing, and people conducting business at this location -- the defining feature is that nobody is really under the age of 30-35 usually if they use the venue for social functions. It changes from city to city, sometimes it's a local hipster cafe or a random 24h chain where interesting things happen outside the purview of what is mainstream.
myaso··on Ask HN: How do you manage multiple learning projects?
Pick a single thing to focus on and maintain sustained effort on it. Pump brown noise/ambient noise into your head at 3 to 6 hour intervals while you study. Tell other people to go hell if they bother you. Disconnect from the internet, use offline materials, and keep your phone in airplane mode. Repeat until goal is satisfied and move on to the next thing. If you focus on one thing you don't need a schedule since you just do that one thing every second you are free. Having less time forces you to manage your time better. Minimizing the bullshit in your life is also helpful and may actually be a prerequisite before you can get anything meaningful done.
myaso··on Fewer than 10k people have the skills necessary for AI research?
It assumes a math background implicitly. I feel like you need some context already to get value out of it. I wouldn't bother reading it without doing something hands on or going through another course like cs231n or fastai first. It's an excellent book regardless of the above points.
myaso··on Ask HN: Why does FaceBook insist on attaching business account to personal one?
Lock in. You won't be able to quit. Much more powerful motivator than telling yourself 'i keep an account to keep in touch'. Basically ensures continuity of Facebook across however many years you would expect to work and prevents them being wiped out with changing preferences across generations. It's not accidental.
