mxcrossr··on The Njahi Wars: Behind Kenya's Controversial Black Bean
Interesting read. I like rice and beans, but I go absolutely crazy with the seasoning. In that sense, the bean being bland may be no trouble for me!
mxcrossr··on Snow science; 100 years later
Maybe I missed something but… did they not actually explain how his invention works?
mxcrossr··on Lima: Linux-on-Mac
You forgot BSD… oh wait I guess they’re also user hostile because they dare to ship without GNU grep
mxcrossr··on The Missing Semester of CS Education
The trick is to find a CS professor who actually knows how to write makefiles instead of just copying and pasting his last one!
mxcrossr··on The Missing Semester of CS Education
Perhaps if you had taken a course on ethics you might recognize the good that comes from something that doesn’t directly lead to financial gain!

> Fix typo in file name #12181 Tasty: set experimental to zero #12438

Ah key commits that you just know you have to bump the version up after receiving.

mxcrossr··on Even If You Think Discussing Aliens Is Ridiculous, Just Hear Me Out
> This has even been true with aliens. The science fiction writer Kim Stanley Robinson reminded me that in the early 1900s it was widely but mistakenly believed that we had visual evidence of canals on Mars.

I wonder how true this is. Whenever I read old science fiction it does seem like aliens on Venus/Mars was believed to be a real possibility. So while we now think that aliens existing would be this huge existential crisis for humanity… maybe we would just accept it without issue as speculated by the author.

mxcrossr··on Study: Vitamin D won’t limit risk, severity of Covid-19
From the paper:

> Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) of serum vitamin D levels identified genetic variants that are robustly associated with serum vitamin D status in different populations and ancestries.

Edit: thanks for both the replies below. I just wanted to answer the question about whether genetic markers are predictive, but I see now that leaving it at just that would be misleading.

mxcrossr··on Investigating how the New York Times A/B tests their headlines
I think user written, three sentence summaries for hacker news posts would be nice. I like that I can submit random interesting articles here, but sometimes a bit of context is necessary to get others engaged.
mxcrossr··on Investigating how the New York Times A/B tests their headlines
If people don’t like click bait I recommend not using news aggregators that only show the headline and are curated based on the votes of users who don’t read the articles!
mxcrossr··on The international student bait-and-switch
That was a typo, thanks for the catch!
mxcrossr··on A Steve Jobs masterclass from a decade ago
It's been interesting to me to see that despite staying at home all the time due to the corona virus, my smart phone usage hasn't really dropped off. I would have expected to be spending more time on my laptop, but it seems like there is something compelling about the medium.
mxcrossr··on The international student bait-and-switch
I guess I just don't believe the notion that ICE made this decision to try and force universities to reopen. It just makes so little sense. I understand that this administration's is interested in returning to normalcy, but surely university's aren't high on their priority list?

Meanwhile, we have now four years of evidence that at every moment where they can reduce the number of illegal immigrants to the US, they make that decision. Whether it's banning people based on their religion or kicking out people who have been legally living here for decades as refugees. It just makes far more sense that the administration's real goal here is to reduce the number of foreign students, not to force universities to reopen. The director of homeland security just doesn't want to admit it.

mxcrossr··on MIT and Harvard file suit against new ICE regulations
We really should just be making whatever accommodation is necessary to reduce travel. The last thing we need is tens of thousands of students flocking to the airport when their visas expire. If you went home, you stay home and continue from there. If you're in the USA, stay put.
mxcrossr··on National Science Foundation reveals details on foreign-influence investigations
They mention the case of Charles Leiber [1] which might be informative.

mxcrossr··on Why we won’t be supporting Sign in with Apple
They mention customer support so many times in that article, but it's a grocery list app! When is the last time I asked for support for the sticky note attached to my refrigerator? I don't doubt that there are indeed customers who need support from time to time, but surely it's a small minority.

These seem to just be contrived arguments to protect their customer data selling bottom line.

mxcrossr··on Silurian Hypothesis: Were There Civilizations on Earth Before Humans? (2018)
The problem is to insert something into the genetic code that survives evolutionary pressures over hundreds of millions of years. There would of course be great irony in this point; a civilization knows how to modify an animal in a way that is more adaptable for millions of years, yet it that civilization itself went extinct.
