mwint··on Automakers try to scuttle Massachusetts ‘right to repair’ law
Did you suffer any increase in premiums? I’ve never been involved in any sort of accident (other than being a passenger), so what happens after an accident re. premiums, etc. is a Scary Thing that I’d love to demystify for myself before I learn by experience.
mwint··on Tesla created secret team to suppress thousands of driving range complaints
It doesn’t measure those factors in advance.
mwint··on Tesla created secret team to suppress thousands of driving range complaints
I’ve thought that ever since they got caught rolling an EV down a hill for a promo video, after taking tons of money from a major automaker.

Wait? That wasn’t Tesla? Okay, I guess there’s a level below “fraudulent to the very core”

> My 2016 ICE car's "miles left" meter is accurate to +/- 2 miles from the moment I top up the tank (80% highway driving, 20% hilly city and rolling country roads).

No way. That’d be accurate to under 1% - well within the variation you’ll get just from different air densities (temperature, pressure, humidity). Forget about A/C on or off, tire pressure, etc.

It’s gotta be tricking you somehow.

mwint··on Ask HN: My child was diagnosed with sensory processing disorder. What to do?

Does this mean optical nearsightedness, or a neural thing limiting vision by distance?

mwint··on Ask HN: Why is nobody manufacturing low tech electric cars?
Charge timer is the only thing other than the backup camera that is materially improved by the larger touch screen. The charge timer is moved to the little dashboard LCD in the S model, and it’s a bit janky.
mwint··on Ask HN: Why is nobody manufacturing low tech electric cars?
I have a 2014 Nissan Leaf S (the lowest trim). It’s refreshingly simple, it has a screen but it’s only for the radio and it’s not a touch screen. Tactile controls for everything.

It has an 80 mile range, which is fine for everything around the region, and my family has a gas car anyway. The 80 mile range keeps the prices pretty low, too. Highly recommended for a nearly free-to-use EV without the techno stuff.

(We also have a 2015 Leaf SL, the top trim, and it has the touchscreen stuff. SL has 360 camera, leather seats, fancy sound system and that’s about it. Get the S. It’s all you need.)

mwint··on Electric Vehicles for Everyone? The Impossible Dream
Okay, so 20mi of where you were born and the four other places easily accessible by rail. It just wouldn’t work in rural, spread out America.

(Anyway, if we cave to this demand, getting rid of trains will be next on the docket. Remember when the green folks were all about EVs, until they started happening? And now it’s “no personal transportation”?)

Keyboard brightness - you can put the control into control center and then it’s two clicks to get to a slider for it.

Not awesome, but for the relatively rare times I want to change it manually, it’s been acceptable.

mwint··on Android phone hits 24GB of RAM, as much as a 13-inch MacBook Pro
Not Apple PR magic, but true firsthand experience. Objectively, this is the computer that makes me happiest and most productive. It could run on a 6MHz slime mold processor for all I care.
mwint··on Android phone hits 24GB of RAM, as much as a 13-inch MacBook Pro
See, this is the thing about M1: I don’t care about your numbers (which I have no doubt are true), I care about my personal experience with the magic cold $999 aluminum slab that runs circles around everything I owned before.

Reading these always feels like winning an F1 race, then being gaslit about how that’s not possible because of inferior cylinder design.

mwint··on Android phone hits 24GB of RAM, as much as a 13-inch MacBook Pro
I have one, and it did/does. Those statements were not untrue.

Idk if it swaps fast or what, and I don't care.

mwint··on Disabled at 22 million commits
Git commit timestamps are 100% fudgeable. You could implement this based on GitHub repository age, but the assumptions would break for imported repos.

(Understanding we’re waaaay off in edge case territory here and this is all basically academic.)

mwint··on ChatGPT is now a brilliant tool for winding up telemarketers and scammers
Collect calls.
mwint··on ChatGPT is now a brilliant tool for winding up telemarketers and scammers
Good point. I’m mostly talking about following the phone tree (the vehicle extended warranty people needed you to hit 1 to get to a human). Definitely a good call not to just mash numbers.
mwint··on ChatGPT is now a brilliant tool for winding up telemarketers and scammers
A couple years ago I committed to answering all phone calls and keeping spammers on the line as long as possible. Within a couple weeks it had real effect, and now I’m legitimately excited when the rare spammer calls me.

Probably 2h net investment for the near-guarantee that calls to my phone are legit. Totally worth it.

Steps:

(1) If it’s a robot, punch numbers until you get to a human. (2) Act like you’re 120yrs old, incompetent, and forgetful. Tell them some stories about your great-grandson on the baseball team. (3) When they call you on it, switch to your real persona and just tell them you’re setting the phone down on the table and they’ll have to hang up. They hate hanging up, it messes up their stats or something.

This is how you get put on the _real_ do-not-call lists - the ones in India labeled “unprofitable_numbers.txt”.

mwint··on Reverse-engineering Google’s "Skip Button Guarantee"
This is somewhat pedantic. With this logic, you could say that the purpose of a car is to get somewhere, and therefore the optimal speed is c.

But that would be a completely useless thing to say, because we can’t get your Camry to c. There is a whole system of tradeoffs that we all know exists.

Google could easily lower ”bad things” to 0 by shutting down tomorrow. The government could easily eliminate racism by nuking everyone. None of those are interesting or intellectually stimulating discussions.

“Optimal” is different than “perfect”. Everyone else here is talking about it from a system view.

mwint··on NXP has messed up their password form validation
Agree. Apple’s default password generator has always seemed to strike a sane balance - plenty of entropy, technically contains special characters (-) but nothing that needs escaped, and very typeable or readable.
mwint··on Quality of new vehicles in US declining on more tech use: study
My requirement is to tow the Space Shuttle up Mt Everest. I found a used Prius and am unsatisfied with its performance.

Cmon, that’s not a defect. That’s being irritated because you didn’t spec out what you need.

mwint··on Submarine missing near Titanic used a $30 Logitech gamepad for steering
Yeah, and there will always be a country willing to let you do anything short of actual piracy under their flag, maybe for a fee. There’s no world government, thank goodness.
mwint··on Rivian embraces Tesla's charging standard for EVs
1. The Tesla charger is _better_ in essentially every measurable and subjective way.

2. They want to sell cars, and cars with the Tesla connector have access to Tesla superchargers without a dongle.
