mvlipwig··on Nearly 200 people under observation after Irkutsk lab worker dies from plague
It's difficult to say for sure, but the consensus is leaning towards zoonotic origin from a bat or pangolin in a wet market. (I'm not very well researched on this topic and don't have any formal background in it, so hedge accordingly)
mvlipwig··on Powerless F1 drivers frustrated by Bahrain F1 software glitch
I think those engineers had some memories of their FSAE / FSUK days during that patch.
mvlipwig··on SpaceX's Starship launching to orbit for first time ever today
I could elaborate with a photo if you'd like
mvlipwig··on SpaceX's Starship launching to orbit for first time ever today
36 full flow staged combustion engines all working is no easy feat
mvlipwig··on Spymarks, not Watermarks
US bills use both, and the invisible watermarks have proven their value. Imperceptible imperfections intentionally (yay, illiteration) placed on 100 dollar bills have managed to catch advanced North Korean forgery attempts. Same goes for magnetic inks and all kinds of visible and invisible watermarks on US currency.
mvlipwig··on Spymarks, not Watermarks
If checking for counterfeit bills becomes harder, trust in the currency is degraded. Once that happens, vendors will either incentive digital payments (which are definitionally tracked), switch to a tracked currency, or barter more. Trust in bills is super easy to take for granted.
mvlipwig··on One-Electron Universe
This might be a result of me not understanding theoretical physics, but this seems "not even wrong." How could you even go about testing this?
mvlipwig··on METR and Redwood Offer Holy %^ Postmortem of the HuggingFace Hack
The technology to kill hundreds of millions of people has existed for around 75 years now. This has been dealt with in the past through deterrence, and likely will be dealt with through deterrence in the future.
mvlipwig··on CoMaps integration with the wider FLOSS ecosystem
A wzsabre(https://wzsabre.rocks) integration would be helpful in jurisdictions where that's legal
mvlipwig··on Nitter and XCancel receive cease and desist notices
If piracy sites are a good indicator of locales that let you hide from American lawyers, then probably Russia
mvlipwig··on Spotify Soloist, official terminal client for headless and DIY setups
This is great. I've spent a lot of time dealing with 3rd party versions of this (which had all the finickyness expected of a reverse-engineered API) and hopefully this makes headless Spotify less irritating.
mvlipwig··on AI companies destroy physical books – let's scan rare books before it's too late
I wonder if Anthropic could rent or sell access to their collection to the internet archive? It would probably be a good PR move (which they probably need right now), but I'm not sure what type of legal shenanigans they would need to do in order to not violate copyright law.
mvlipwig··on Watching TikTok and Instagram deactivates the cognitive control network: Study
Small-n fMRI studies tend to have issues with replication because of how noisy and difficult to use fMRI machines are. I would take this research more as an indication that more research is needed, as opposed to the be-all and end-all of how short-form video interacts with the brain.

(Caveat: I have no expertise with neuroscience or using fMRI machines. I'm mostly basing my comment off pre-replication crisis fMRI experiments that failed to produce useful data upon scrutiny.)

mvlipwig··on Show HN: ponzy.io – I made a casual trading game you can play in the browser
That's a really spectacular UI, and the concept is a lot of fun. However, the market ends up settling on the true value of PONZI ($0) pretty early on (n=2). The first three minutes are great, but after that the price is more or less stagnant.
mvlipwig··on Young People Hate AI CEOs So Passionately That It's Almost Hard to Believe
This is anecdotal, but "hate" is absolutely a good descriptor here
mvlipwig··on Young People Hate AI CEOs So Passionately That It's Almost Hard to Believe
I'm skeptical of the income inequality hypothesis as the US Gini has been mostly stagnant for 20 years (as per https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/SIPOVGINIUSA). I'd imagine that (social|) media has a fairly large impact on this phenomenon as it makes inequality more visible than before.
mvlipwig··on Young People Hate AI CEOs So Passionately That It's Almost Hard to Believe
As a young person, the data I would like to see on this topic are how AI/tech CEOs compare to CEOs on other industries. I would be surprised if Nadella polled significantly lower than the median non-tech CEO, based on gen Z's opinion of CEOs.
