mutagen··on Stompenberg FX: Demo and play over 150 pedals live via the internet
This is genius and makes me wonder why I didn't think of it.

Edit: they already thought of that!

mutagen··on AstraZeneca vaccine doesn't prevent B1351 Covid in early trial
Is this the Israel study you're referring to?

https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa2101765

Just curious, as I've received the Pfizer/Biontech vaccine.

mutagen··on Satellite imagery shows Northern California kelp forests have collapsed
The paper and a repo a few clicks away with better figures and explanations of how they're obtained.

mutagen··on FDA authorizes rapid, at-home coronavirus test
How common is this? Aside from the initial news that this happened I haven't heard much. Any studies looking at a larger scale?

Friend of mine got COVID, the health department told him he could get reinfected and to continue taking percautions. He was sick enough with it that he's taking the threat of reinfection seriously.

mutagen··on 14nm and 7nm are NOT what you think it is – Visiting Tescan Part 3/3
Feature size between Intel and TSMC compared by viewing and measuring a section of L1 cache from modern Intel and AMD processors in an electron microscope. Parts 1 and 2 of the video covered creating and preparing the samples.
mutagen··on The Birth of Unix with Brian Kernighan
I think your podcast and format is great, keep doing it and refining it. I look forward to listening to each new episode because of the interesting and wide ranging guests and the broader viewpoint you look for in the discussions.
mutagen··on AI Camera Ruins Soccer Game After Mistaking Referee's Bald Head for Ball
Lighting conditions was my first thought, the camera aimed almost at the sun presents some challenging contrast that may not have been trained properly.
mutagen··on The original source code of Microsoft GW-BASIC from 1983
Ones of my early long lasting memories from 7th grade computer lab, my first exposure to programming, was helping another student kick off a deeply nested tangle of IF statements to build his own adventure program.

Years later learning about the Z-machine was a revelation.

mutagen··on Cryptic transmission of Covid-19 revealed by genomic epidemiology
I'm glad to see that the Seattle Flu Study has been able to start doing localized community testing for COVID-19 in the past week and that their work will be able to help 'decrypt' the transmission among the community.
mutagen··on How to Find New Music
Every Noise At Once [1] has a nice web of genres and artists to check out.

From their description: Every Noise at Once is an ongoing attempt at an algorithmically-generated, readability-adjusted scatter-plot of the musical genre-space, based on data tracked and analyzed for 3,883 genre-shaped distinctions by Spotify as of 2020-01-30. The calibration is fuzzy, but in general down is more organic, up is more mechanical and electric; left is denser and more atmospheric, right is spikier and bouncier.

mutagen··on Show HN: A tiny isometric city builder in JavaScript
My wife saw this on screen and said “Oh, is that a kitchen planner?”

Hmm, MIT license, this could be a kitchen planner for her :)

mutagen··on Can one earthquake trigger another on the other side of the world?
At the scale of the Pacific Plate it isn't one rigid piece but more of a soft plastic plate. Sure, movement in one area changes stress in other boundaries but there are quite a few more inputs and outputs like the diverging boundaries spanning the east side of the Pacific Plate (Juan de Fuca, Explorer Ridge, Galapagos Rise, East Pacific Ridge, Pacific Antarctic Ridge are a few). Some of these are more responsible for the Ring of Fire than the Pacific Plate boundaries: the other end of the Juan de Fuca plate is the Cascadia Subduction Zone and the Nazca Plate as part of the Andean orogeny to name two.

Significant earthquakes can be produced by motion that isn't aligned with the general east to west movement of the Pacific Plate. Fault structures around the plate boundaries, fault complexes associated with the bordering plates (North America, South American, Antarctic, etc), and localized stress associated with subduction and volcanoes all produce large earthquakes. This research includes at least one of these quakes (Landers).

mutagen··on SimplyNUC Unveils Sequoia: AMD Ryzen V-Series-Based UCFF PC
Beefy firewall is the first that comes to mind.
mutagen··on Overwatch's Mei Is Becoming a Symbol of the Hong Kong Resistance
Incoming subtle nerfs (or buffs to other characters) to shift the meta away from any usage so there's no controversy, no chance of anything Mei being used in a tournament.
mutagen··on Smoke point of cooking oils
There’s a bunch of articles on this site digging into the chemistry of cooking with EVOO. I haven’t dug into the references but it looks like a thorough look at exactly what heating various oils does to the chemistry of fatty acids.

mutagen··on A Primer on Shooting in Manual Mode: Aperture, Shutter Speed, and ISO [video]
There's a variety of apps that give you manual control. Apple has provided RAW access to sensor data for a few years now and I think some Android manufacturers beat them to it. You're still dealing with a tiny sensor but you can practice and get your mind around the concepts.
mutagen··on Aldi, a brutally efficient grocery chain, is upending America's supermarkets
Our local WinCo, a US West Coast chain, utilizes checkout dividers to great effect (and employs some of the other cost saving measures mentioned in this article). People aren't nearly familiar enough with using them, though, they park their cart alongside the conveyor belt blocking the next customer instead of going to the end of the conveyor to bag their groceries. An efficient cashier can move faster than two slow customer bagging groceries, some of the local cashiers will have three customers bagging at once.
mutagen··on Microsoft Gives Paint the 11th Hour Reprieve It Deserves
Greenshot [1] is a great open source Windows screenshot utility for the workflow you describe. Prt Scr, select region, editor opens with screenshot where you can add boxes, arrows, etc. and save, copy to clipboard, etc. Like MS Paint, it is lightweight and focused in a way few Windows programs are these days.

mutagen··on CVE-2019-9193: Not a Security Vulnerability
Yeah, I discovered a flaw in SSH the other day, if my account on the remote server Is listed in the sudoers file I can escalate to root priviliges, as soon as I create a snazzy logo I'm going to get myself a CVE.

Seriously though, security research is starting to drift into bizarro land, security contacts at companies are inundated with port-scans asking for bug bounties because there's an open port and now people are registering CVEs on expected and documented behavior.

mutagen··on Morning Cup of Coding – A curated daily newsletter for programmers of all fields
Thank you for doing this, I've found the newsletter refreshing and, even if the handful of articles aren't my cup of tea, they aren't retreads of stuff I see elsewhere. Programming language of the day is an especially deep well of stuff I've never heard of. Even though I'll likely never use any but the most mainstream of languages, it is always interesting to see what pops up.
mutagen··on Exercise, fasting shown to help cells shed defective proteins
I've found short term fasting to be like a muscle I have to exercise. Skipping a meal with abundant calories around me was hard. I had to start off small (skipping one meal) and slowly work up to slightly longer fasts (skipping the next meal, etc). I think we all have different physiologies and different mental adaptations (certainly for me hunger is partly an emotion, a desire to satiate that only bears a passing resemblance to how many calories my body needs) though and what works for me might not work for you.
mutagen··on A Case for a New Language
While that is one quite useful application of DSLs, they're certainly used more widely than config files. Care to expand further?
mutagen··on SQL: One of the most valuable skills
I have the same issue, procedural thinking. I've made some small progress thinking in sets and working to re-phrase my goals in terms of sets of data, sometimes using window functions (row_number(), etc) when I need n-1 items from the query.

Some problems can to be assembled from CTEs / subqueries when you might have reached for a procedural solution to 'finish' the problem. Grasping CTEs was a big thing for me and now I'm wrestling with issues of style mixing CTEs with tiny subqueries and wondering if the increase in readability (for me) is correct.

I'd love to see suggestions for digging deeper on this too.

mutagen··on Criminals Are Tapping into the Phone Network Backbone to Empty Bank Accounts
An app or hardware generating TOTP or HOTP codes is generally considered better than SMS based authentication but is susceptible to phishing and requires planning around phone upgrades or backup measures in case of a lost device. Google Authenticator app, Yubikey, or the like.
mutagen··on 773M Password ‘Megabreach’ Is Years Old
>Another fun fact, each time my password was mentioned, it was missing the first letter.

I get an old password in these kinds of emails that has been stripped of case, the capitalization I used is not what what I received. Still, the first was was attention grabbing, even if I've long moved on from that password to a password manager with a randomly generated password for each site.

mutagen··on Understanding the BeagleBone’s built in microcontrollers (2016)
I bought (or crowdfunded, don't remember) the https://bela.io/ cape for the BeagleBone and have it sitting on the shelf waiting for me to free up some time to dig into the existing ecosystem and try to take things further.
mutagen··on Clojure REBL [video]
I stumbled upon importlib.reload(module_name) in the Spyder IPython console, which I use as a REPL alongside the code editor in Spyder. REPL based programming has spoiled me and I find myself drifting towards lispy things like Clojure for the REPL alone, nevermind all the other good things.
mutagen··on U.S. Robocall Data
Seems like an effective use for Lenny: https://blog.acolyer.org/2017/08/28/using-chatbots-against-v...
mutagen··on Call Python functions from VBA in all Microsoft Office apps
Props to openpyxl, just used that module to do some quick and dirty spreadsheet manipulation to save some colleagues a bunch of time.
