mustafa_pasi··on 'Tradwives' promote a lifestyle that evokes the 1950s
I cannot roll my eyes further if I tried. I have been told that I am conservative and dominant. However this is very far from what I want in a partner.

A wife who doesn't have her own career is not something I would ever consider. And although I might be called dominant I am also more attracted to assertive women, than women who act or are very timid. I want somebody who can also help me in life, not just depend on me.

I am definitely not a feminist either, though. I very much want a woman who has some self respect and dignity and does not jump in bed with random men, because she thinks it is some act of self-empowerment.

Anyway the impression I get and this is going to be very controversial but basically stupid people mostly have trouble forming healthy relationships, try lots of things, fuck up a lot and then join subcultures like feminism and tradwife whatever as a reaction. Smart people are more cautious, and less adventurous, take longer to find a partner, but then mostly have functional relationships and do not feel the need to start using some internet label to guide their daily life.

mustafa_pasi··on If everyone bicycled like the Danes, we’d avoid a UK’s worth of emissions
> If it's -15C and sunny it's good, but if it's +15C and raining it's a pain.

In the Netherlands and I think even in Copenhagen, 15C and raining is much more common. In my own experience, raining isn't the biggest pain. I hated the wind the most.

mustafa_pasi··on If everyone bicycled like the Danes, we’d avoid a UK’s worth of emissions
I find it depressing that reducing all global commuting related carbon emissions would reduce global emissions by just 1%. And then the EV is supposed to be poster child for "doing something about the climate" and in that best case it would be much worse than this.
mustafa_pasi··on Ask HN: Meal Planning App?
For me cooking and eating is very spontaneous. I also believe this is what separates people who can cook from those who cannot. I can cook because I can mix and match my current appetite, with what I have available in the fridge and figure out something out of that. I know the general idea behind many recipes and cooking techniques but I do not aim to reproduce them to the letter. Nor do I have some kind of meal plan for the whole week written down somewhere, because that would conflict with my daily appetite changes and whatever I have lying around in my fridge or what I stumble upon in the supermarket.

So to answer your question: I don't. I keep myself open and let myself be guided by my current appetite and my instinct.

I tried having a meal plan in the past and that just proved to be more of a hassle and incredibly boring.

mustafa_pasi··on Tech Compensation in Europe
I couldn't give a rat's ass about relocation costs, or furniture, or even home ownership tbh. Those are all relatively minimal costs.

But if you have a nice life, a nice social circle of friends, ...etc, do not take all that for granted. You won't magically get all that back once you move. You probably never will to be honest. You will meet other people but building a social life from scratch in a new country is hard and you will end up with a lot of shallow relationships, or maybe nothing at all.

But it really depends on your personal situation. If you are a 20 year old nerd with barely any social life to begin with, go ahead. It might even improve your life.

mustafa_pasi··on Tech Compensation in Europe
Only if you ignore the cost of moving, which is enormous. Basically dropping your whole life to get maybe 20k€ more, abroad. If you are happy with your life, not even 150k€ would justify a move because good money ain't going to buy you the same friends and family.
mustafa_pasi··on Tech Compensation in Europe
Demand: US has much more investment in pure-tech. In EU a lot of SWE are working in IT offices of non-tech companies. So the job market in the US is more competitive.

Supply: In the EU university is easily accessible, meaning that there are thousands of universities pumping hundreds of thousands of graduates a year. Plus, now they even invented the Blue Card to make it easy for skilled second/third worlders to immigrate to the EU.

mustafa_pasi··on U.S. drone pilot leaks footage reveals accidental killing of children and adults
No sorry, there is no complex geopolitical matters at play here. It is actually very simple.

These are civilians minding their own business. You don't get the right to murder them just because you are fighting nearby with some other group of people.

If that most basic of human rights is not protected then nothing is.

You might maybe be able to excuse civilian causalities in some total war scenario where your own safety is literally at risk. But that is very far from what is happening here.

mustafa_pasi··on U.S. drone pilot leaks footage reveals accidental killing of children and adults
What a disgusting attitude you have. Imagine if somebody invaded the US because they didn't like the Biden administration. In the process they kill your family, but don't worry, it's just civilian causalities during a war. Shit happens.

If you don't already you should document your project on Youtube. It's a super cool project and I'm sure you can even get lots of Patreon sponsors that way and even commercial ones probably.
mustafa_pasi··on Farmers always worked from home
The statement is not true in general. The typical layout of a European village is having the houses close to the centre and the arable land surrounding the village. You wouldn't have your arable land directly outside of your porch (you wouldn't even have a porch). And that was probably the setup centuries ago when feudalism was still practiced. Through inheritance, the last pre-industrial farmers were tending to parcels of land all over the place, although probably still within a reasonable commute of their village. But definitely not "working from home".
mustafa_pasi··on Israeli military search team helped recover majority of Surfside victims
It is very much on topic. If they want to be seen as humanitarians they need to stop committing war crimes and other atrocities in their backyard.

Morality does not subscribe to some kind of arithmetic where doing good deeds can somehow cancel the evil that you also commit.

mustafa_pasi··on Israeli military search team helped recover majority of Surfside victims
It is hard not to notice that all the US/UK media were very afraid to put Israel's name in the titles and articles when they reported on that scandal.
mustafa_pasi··on Toyota is quietly pushing Congress to slow the shift to electric vehicles
>Hybrids were a mediocre half-measure

That is not true. Hybrids can be greener than an full EV. To make EVs palatable, automakers realized they need to use huge batteries with 400+ miles of range. But the average daily commute is much much less than that.

The result of which is that you waste a lot of money and CO2 emissions to produce a battery that is 3x too big.

A hybrid with a range extender and 1/3 of the battery, can better accommodate the needs of daily commuters while actually being cleaner than an EV since the CO2 emissions from EV manufacturing is almost entirely due to the battery and it takes years (two to three depending on your commute) to offset those emission even against a new ICE car.

mustafa_pasi··on The Assange case is collapsing but it remains a travesty of justice
But my point is their intention is to exploit the weakness of the democracy they enforce on the target country. And that is assuming this is a situation where they are exporting democracy. There are also the opposite situations where they declare democratic outcomes invalid because they don't bow down to US interests. They happily support dictators in that case.
mustafa_pasi··on The Assange case is collapsing but it remains a travesty of justice
I am not sure it is always a better system in all situations. Democracies are very easily corrupted by foreign influence. This is one of the reasons rich western countries love to "export democracy". One of the reasons strongmen rise to power in third world countries is as a reaction to imperialism. In that situation it is not even clear you can have a functioning democracy, and then the choice is between a puppet of foreign interests or a strongman.
mustafa_pasi··on The Assange case is collapsing but it remains a travesty of justice
There is no such thing as countries spreading democracy and I am not aware of any country that has ever went to war to spread democracy. The only time the US attempted to "spread democracy" is when their influence over a foreign country was being challenged by anti-imperialist entities. At this point they invade to make sure the country transitions to a democracy, which when it comes to a poor country with little international clout, democracy amounts to it being very susceptible to foreign interference. And of course the US also invades actual democracies when they elect anti-imperialists that challenge US interests in the region.
mustafa_pasi··on Ask HN: What would a Facebook that isn't evil look like?
A nonprofit akin to the Wikipedia foundation running the platform funded by donations*. No advertising and no tracking. Facebook is mostly good (even tough I don't use it). It's funding it the rotten part.

*You could also have some tax scheme akin to a TV license to get public funding without public influence.

mustafa_pasi··on Bezos donates $100M each to CNN contributor Van Jones and chef Jose Andres
Humanity won't go extinct any time soon, and at this point in time focusing resources on fighting problems like climate change is infinitely more rewarding than any stupid dicking around on the moon or mars.

Mars won't ever be even as habitable as a thoroughly fucked up earth. It is a huge waste of time and resources that could be better employed on more immediate problems.

mustafa_pasi··on Bezos donates $100M each to CNN contributor Van Jones and chef Jose Andres
The quote is wrong. Antarctica is next. Then the moon. Then the bottom of the ocean.

But all these places are desolate of life and not even resource rich, so there is little point to go there. Mars is like this as well. It's not like you are colonizing a rich continent like America.

mustafa_pasi··on Imperial Delusions
I am no great fan of the EU, but the EU as a whole does not engage in much imperialism, besides that forced on it by the US.
mustafa_pasi··on Ask HN: Focus Oriented Desktop Environment?
There's loads of them.[1] Seems like you want the ones with "graphical configuration". Openbox, Fluxbox and others allow everything to done using the mouse.

mustafa_pasi··on Ask HN: Best Place to Live in 2050?
The best place to be is home. In an emergency situation, your own government (the one you hold the citizenship for and have cultural ties with) is the one you can rely on. Non-citizen residents will get shafted. Any country that is too foreign will be hard to navigate (I mean navigate the bureaucracy) in an emergency situation. And also consider, as a foreigner your ties with the locals are going to be weak so you will need to fend for yourself.

I mean, as an EU citizen who has lived in multiple EU countries, this is also true today when everything is smooth sailing.

In any emergency situation it won't take long for anti-foreign sentiments to become a cause for concern.

mustafa_pasi··on Ask HN: Should I sell my house to fund my startup? Anyone with the same story?
You should never risk you personal wealth on startup ventures, ever.

Startups the SV way are hard to do, if you are not part of the bubble. As you said, you don't have an "in" so nobody is going to easily give you money. You have two options:

1. consider a different growth strategy, startups are not the only way to grow a business, focus less on growth and more on stable income, try to acquire at least one recurring client

2. build your reputation, then you will get capital, doing no.1 first will also help you with no.2.

mustafa_pasi··on Electric aircraft set to take flight by 2026 under new agreements
Digging through their website[1] trying to figure them out. Seems to me that the whole business proposition depends on their understanding that Norway, Sweden, (and I guess they expect others to follow) will mandate all short flights being electric in the next decade. They also say turboprops are higher maintenance and this expense reduces the viability of short flying routes, and I guess their implication is that electric will be cheaper. I am not sold on that one. 95% of the maintenance cost is the routine inspection. You'd have to do a routine inspection on electric propulsion as well. This is all just speculation until you see it in action.
