murrayb··on Microsoft announces Windows 11
What happened to "Windows 10 is the last version of Windows?" (eg. https://www.theverge.com/2015/5/7/8568473/windows-10-last-ve...)

Will the upgrade be in-place as per Windows 10 updates?

murrayb··on Show HN: Reclist.me – Share your favorite books, podcasts, newsletters
I like the idea. It's completely fine if your chosen target audience is Twitter users however if that wasn't your intention you may want to look into some way of using the application that doesn't involve a twitter account as not every-one has one or wants one :)
murrayb··on Ask HN: What was the biggest contributor to your happiness in the past year?
Yep that's the one! Cheers
murrayb··on Ask HN: What was the biggest contributor to your happiness in the past year?
From memory it was called The Marriage Course. It was offered by The Uniting Church. We are not affiliated with the church and did not find the course overly religious. The session on sex was the most moralistic but no surprises there and the content was still useful /helpful.
murrayb··on Ask HN: What was the biggest contributor to your happiness in the past year?
Did a marriage course with my wife. Very helpful wish we had done it a decade earlier!
murrayb··on Foam: A personal knowledge management and sharing system for VSCode
+1 for Joplin, I moved over from Evernote because I was worried about Evernotes future and I have been pretty happy with Joplin. It's not quite as featured as Evernote but it is more stable and reliable.
murrayb··on GNOME has no thumbnails in the file picker and my toilets are blocked
This. I get periodically frustrated with Gnome and give KDE a go and always end up going back to Gnome within a couple of weeks. I want to like it, I want it to work but Gnome (on my setup) is more responsive and that is more important than all of the other deficiencies of Gnome.
murrayb··on Introduction to the Zettelkasten Method
I recently moved to Joplin from Evernote. I think I use Joplin in a Zettelkasten way (though no doubt it would upset a purist) nonetheless I find Joplin a good fit and it is interesting that I independently arrived at a similar (though less complete!) solution. Now I have to think about how much of that completeness I go back and apply to my existing x thousand notes... :)
murrayb··on India authorises sale of electric vehicles without batteries
Not sure how Govt duty works in India but if it is anything like in Australia removing the battery would make the vehicle cheaper and thus reduce the amount of duty paid.
murrayb··on The joys of owning an ‘OG’ email account
I have a firstname.lastname Gmail account. Neither frst or last are particularly common. There are various people around the planet who hand out my address as there own, I get invoices on a regular basis but also correspondence from real estate agents and legal correspondence. Most recently I spam listed a Canadian telco because some gentleman in Canada is joyfully handing out my address. On the other hand I very rarely get someone else's snail mail and if I do it is for a neighbour I know a house or two away and never someone in another country :-)
murrayb··on 'Dord': A Ghost Word
I thought it was going to be about the musical instrument- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dord_(instrument), somebody should let Merriam-Webster know :)
murrayb··on Why the French love to say no
I hear "yeah, nah" more used in this sarcastic way than any other in Western Australia.
murrayb··on 30-plus years of HyperCard, the missing link to the Web (2012)
I have never been a hypercard user but everything I have seen/read about it suggests that it would be a great replacement for my Evernote use case (accessible anywhere personal database of stuff). I have looked at some re-implementations but lack of Linux and/or mobile device (Android) support have ruled out the ones I have seen.
murrayb··on Can Dirt Save the Earth?
Thanks for the recommendation, just ordered a copy for my wife as a Christmas present. She's a horticulturalist so I think she will love it.

Hacker News accidental Christmas gift shopping tips?

murrayb··on Why Pencils Are Yellow (2017)
Yep same in Australia
murrayb··on Life Got You Down? Time to Read The Master and Margarita
Apparently I was searching wrong- no clue how, possibly as a result of following a Google link into Amazon. Thank-you for the links.
murrayb··on Life Got You Down? Time to Read The Master and Margarita
Disappointed to find out that there is no Kindle version. I actually find that uncommon lately so it is a surprise when there isn't one.
murrayb··on Tiddlywiki – A non-linear personal web notebook
Yep search, search across attachments and web page capture means that Evernote rules in this space for me.

Evernote has traditionally been marketed as a note-taking app but for me it is a personal database/encyclopaedia. The ease of finding anything without having to worry about structure or links (though I have a bit of both) is fantastic.

murrayb··on The most relaxing vacation you can take is going nowhere
"Dismissing the perspective of any and all non-<insert group>" is a generalisation and not unique to parents. Though as a parent I have noticed it too.
murrayb··on The most relaxing vacation you can take is going nowhere
I have 2 primary or lower school aged kids and do upkeep my own house, I also have relatives nearby though I am not sure how that is relevant. I love stay at home holidays and am on one now. We do take non stay at home vacations but I don't find them as relaxing. This week I am looking forward to walking the kids to school (something too time prohibitive normally) hiking, reading, playing in the shed and if I feel like it some home maintenance too. Horses for courses I guess :)
murrayb··on Our brain is a storyteller, not a reporter from an inner world
I suspect that the organization that the OP is referring to is Landmark and they do say that the material they present is their intellectual property and their "technology". Mostly though it's non original ideas eith added word soup.
murrayb··on Ask HN: 2018 Summer Reading List?
There are a lot of really great suggestions here. I would recommend putting all of them aside and read Deep Work by Cal Newport and then re assess.
murrayb··on Ask HN: What is your comfort book?
Terry Pratchett- I've re-read Thief of Time the most but they all work.

For poetry, Mary Oliver.

murrayb··on Which note taking app has support for linux and android?
Evernote does me perfectly fine.

I have recently downloaded NixNote for another try (last time I tried it was still called Nevernote). It seems ok so far but nothing compelling (for me) to make the switch from Evernote.

murrayb··on Amazon to block Australian shoppers from its US website
They have been increasingly blocking purchase of digital content (Kindle books, Audible etc) based on geographic region anyway to the point that the advantage of being an international/.com customer was getting smaller.

It annoys the crap out of me that content can be available in one region and not another, I want to consume it and happy to pay for it.

murrayb··on Stripe to donate $1M to California Yimby
> I would say it is the defining problem of our generation.

Respectfully disagree. I would say it is a defining symptom. The problem is centralisation and the insistence that people need to show up to an office to do their work. There is plenty of cheap housing even in the US, the issue is to let people work from where the housing is rather than insisting they move to "where the jobs are".

IMO Stripes money would be better spent on telecommuting policy and technology.

There will always be area's more popular for whatever reason. Those that want to spend their money on an address can do so but every-one else needs some assistance to work from an address that suits them and their budget.

murrayb··on It's time to head back to RSS?
I went to Blogtrottr https://blogtrottr.com/ when Reader shut down. I have been very happy with it and it means one less place to go look, my feeds just come to my inbox.

murrayb··on Enemy within: gut bacteria drive autoimmune disease
I have the same condition and have improved it significantly by removing gluten from my diet and adding fibre and natural probiotics from fermented foods. I am also not a biologist of any sort. I get regular blood tests done (yearly) to monitor, read and experiment. Not cured but levels generally heading in a better direction.
