muro··on Testing two 18 TB white label SATA hard drives from datablocks.dev
After a year or two is exaggerating - it's rare to see issues within 5 years.
muro··on Samsung now owns Denon, Bowers and Wilkins, Marantz, Polk, and more audio brands
That's a very pessimistic take. I recently sold a Sonos connect - about 15 years old if not older and working as well as when it was new. I have a Google home max speaker, 8 years old, works flawlessly. We have a pair of B&W speakers from 2001 or so - got the speaker insulation replaced, otherwise everything great. And a 5.1 set from Logitech from 2005 also works without issues - the difficult part is to only make sure the PC has the right outputs, but even that is moot with USB sound cards. We also have some cheap monitor speakers, they work fine after 7 years.

muro··on Unsafe and Unpredictable: My Volvo EX90 Experience
Had a 2006 or so XC90, everything was great. Now driving a 2016 XC90, had one issue with the engine cooling, was repaired in a day, 0 issues otherwise.

muro··on The U.K. closed a tax loophole for the global rich, now they're fleeing
90k / year is not a millionaire, if it's pre-tax. With 35% tax (picked a random reasonable sounding number), it would take 17years to earn a million if you have 0 expenses.
muro··on G7 agrees to exempt U.S. multinationals from global minimum tax
I think this is completely reasonable, services should use the same customs / duties mechanism on "import" as any other goods. The income tax should be also paid the same way. And if the product is created in multiple countries (licenses, Software Components etc), they are part of the whole product and tarifs for parts of goods should similarly apply.
muro··on Gemini Users: We're Going to Look at Your Texts Whether You Like It or Not
It says right in the popup alert message screenshot how to turn it off.
muro··on EC decision on Apple's DMA non-compliance [pdf]
Lots of interesting points, e.g.:

any potential remuneration for facilitating the initial acquisition of end users [...] does not remunerate the gatekeeper for gatekeeper value (= the value a service provided by a gatekeeper on top of the market value of the service, because of its position)

Apple can only charge for initial user acquisition, not for "value" of the user (e.g. if they spend more in app later)

muro··on On Not Carrying a Camera – Cultivating memories instead of snapshots
just got back from there - same. They had various novelty postcards, e.g. build a bridge or elephant out of them - but no picture postcards from the region.
muro··on Apple violated antitrust ruling, judge finds
The court decision is worth the read, you can skip all articles.
muro··on Why Momentum Works (2017)
Only skimped through the article for now, but have to give props to the author - it's beautifully made.
muro··on You can finally buy a Thunderbolt 5 SSD
I have a MacBook pro with limited storage, thus using an external USB 4 drive with 4TB. I rsync some folders from it and then back when I don't want to have it connected, e.g. during flights. It's less convenient but saves a lot of money (external NVMe 4TB was 250 + USB 4 case for 70, vs 1000 for the 4TB upgrade from apple).

I sync my 2TB Google drive folder to it + video files for editing)

muro··on You can finally buy a Thunderbolt 5 SSD
Article is from January 2025
muro··on I tried Windows gaming on a Mac
I do appreciate the article though - was thinking about repurposing a M1 MacBook for games for kids and this tells me it is a better idea to sell it and get a different computer instead, maybe a second hand workstation for cheap.
muro··on I tried Windows gaming on a Mac
tl;dr: you can run windows games with crossover, requires extra manual configuration to make performance better, has input lag and you can get 1080p at medium.

None of that sounds amazing. If you want to play these games without a windows machine, a steam deck seems a much better option.

muro··on Against Best Practices
That's very reasonable.

‘The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable man persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable man.’

muro··on M4 MacBook Pro
Don't bother with thunderbolt 4, go for USB 4 enclosure instead - I've got a Jeyi one. Any SSD will work, I use a Samsung 990 pro inside. It was supposed to be the fastest you can get - I get over 3000MB/s.

muro··on Epic Games and Spotify Say Apple's Latest DMA Changes Are 'Illegal'
They get the money while they play these games. The fine they got for treating their own music store differently than competition is still peanuts.
muro··on Online sports betting hurts consumers
I don't think anyone seriously thought it's not harmful. The only positive spin was talking about responsibility or tax income while just not saying anything about negatives.
muro··on Epic Games and Spotify Say Apple's Latest DMA Changes Are 'Illegal'
They have billions to lose if they comply the way other devs want them to. They like money.
