murderfs··on Meta's Muse is fantastic for web scraping
The answer is that no one gives a shit: just look at people's views on adblock.
murderfs··on TiddlyInstall: A universal, reusable, install system
> Designed by Matthew Roberts and implemented by Claude. If you like this software why not hire me?

Why would I hire you when I could pay $17 for a Claude subscription?

murderfs··on C++26: Trivial infinite loops are no longer undefined behaviour
Correct. See N1528: "Why undefined behavior for infinite loops?" https://www.open-std.org/jtc1/sc22/wg14/www/docs/n1528.htm
murderfs··on Android 17 is the first since 3.x to add new APIs without releasing to the AOSP
> If Samsung and everyone else said "sorry Google', or even a large majority, you're out. Gone. Nada.

The OEMs are incapable of writing a competent operating system, and don't particularly care to.

> Google is also getting more and more pushy with Chrome. What if everyone depending upon that backend, shrugs and says "Sorry Google, we're hard-forking Chrome and we'll all maintain it".

With what maintainers?

murderfs··on TSMC revealing details about next gen A14 node
"14" does have a nice touch to it.
murderfs··on AI safety is mostly a sex cult
That would be a reasonable argument if it were indeed their private lives, and they didn't go around offering to throw gangbangs for AI safety researchers.
murderfs··on An update on Wayback Machine access
That's not even the fundamental problem. Even if the payload runs optimally in the browser, the cost of CPU is so small that it's basically irrelevant.

If you waste your user's time with something that would take a full minute to run on a datacenter core, you're costing the scraper something like $0.000005: 360 W TDP on a 128-core EPYC 9754 * $0.10/kWh. In reality, it'll be substantially less than that, because CPUs don't use 0W at idle.

The only way this would make any sense is if there were many more scrapers than users and scrapers cared more about latency than real users, but that's the exact opposite of reality. The entire endeavor is so fundamentally misguided that it almost seems like a psyop.

murderfs··on XCancel service is suspended until further notice
It seems pretty easy? Someone viewing it through a mirror isn't going to see ads.
murderfs··on I Added a Non-Wi-Fi Mitsubishi AC to Home Assistant
Most new construction with heat pumps are going to use similar thermostats, both because of improved efficiency since the outside unit wants to know how much heating/cooling load is being requested, and more importantly, because builders are lazy and would rather use a battery-powered wireless option than run thermostat wires.

Off the top of my head, Mitsubishi, Rheem, Lennox, and Carrier all have similar default options, with converter boxes for retrofits to 24V controls.

murderfs··on Show HN: Copperhead – Cursor for circuit boards
> Somewhat functional in the trivial problem domains, and always useless where design choices mattered.

This is laughable when you consider that semiconductor design is the least "trivial" problem domain, and it happens entirely in RTL. There's basically zero human intervention when it comes to layout: even floorplanning is being automated nowadays.

murderfs··on Just Bury Your Trash
I interpret "can be cleaner than X and similar to that of Y" to mean "inferior to that of Y, but kinda close". Otherwise, it would be "cleaner than X and Y".
murderfs··on How accurate have Ed Zitron's AI skeptic predictions been?
Have they actually announced that they're charging less than the marginal cost of inference, or that the revenue they're taking in doesn't make up for the cost of training each newer and better model?

The former does not pass the smell test when there are random providers selling tokens for competitive open weight models.

murderfs··on Just Bury Your Trash
What's the point of this when incineration is an option? Even its wikipedia page has only negatives compared to incineration.

> Air emissions can be cleaner than landfills and similar to that of incinerators.

> Large initial investment costs relative to that of alternatives, including [...] incineration.

> Operational costs are high relative to that of incineration.

murderfs··on OpenAI Jalapeño: Better than Nvidia Blackwell
Closer to 2 weeks, as long as the new model fits: your model bits are entirely in mask rom, so you can change them with a metal only ECO that only touches two metal layers. You probably don't even need to run any timing analysis, etc. since all of the changes are going to be isolated in a gigantic square that's isolated from everything else.
murderfs··on How Europe is killing makers and micro-entrepreneurs
Clothing, famously less important on Maslow's hierarchy of needs than semiconductors.
murderfs··on Field measurements of neighborhood-scale air temperature impacts of data centers
> Many people metabolize the alcohol more slowly, and get less of a "hit" from drinking, which makes them less susceptible to addiction.

This is the opposite of how it works, ethanol is the active ingredient for all of the fun parts of drinking, the metabolite, acetaldehyde, is the cause of all of the unfun parts (nausea, headache, flushing).

A significant percentage of East Asians have one or both of a superactive alcohol dehydrogenase (which converts ethanol to acetaldehyde) and a defective aldehyde dehydrogenase (which converts acetaldehyde to acetic acid), and they have significantly lower rates of alcoholism.

murderfs··on California's new tire efficiency rules could save drivers $1B a year
Not the OP, but for my EV, it was a combination of higher load rating because batteries are heavy, tread compound needing to be different (more expensive) because of high torque requirements, and rolling resistance and tire noise being much more important for EVs than ICE cars.
murderfs··on A third world engineer responds to “RISC-V: They should have known better”
Aliexpress doesn't just sell RISC-V parts... I've purchased dozens of STM32, GD32, nrf52 parts from Aliexpress and LCSC.
murderfs··on At-home test for infected ticks could improve Lyme Disease diagnosis
The prophylactic treatment for potential exposure to Lyme is a single dose of doxycycline within 72 hours of being bitten: https://www.cdc.gov/lyme/resources/pdfs/lyme-pep-low-ink-p.p...

If you catch it early before it takes hold, the treatment is almost inconsequential. If you delay, it's up to a 4 week course of antibiotics.

murderfs··on Asus Bike Booster
It's pretty well established for violent crime, at least: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC3969807/

The recidivism rate for property crime is higher than violent crime, so it seems plausible that the same is true for theft: https://counciloncj.org/recidivism_report/

murderfs··on At-home test for infected ticks could improve Lyme Disease diagnosis
The "exhausting treatment" is a single pill, once.
murderfs··on NP-overrated
Most expressions with overloads are a disaster in swift: https://www.cocoawithlove.com/blog/2016/07/12/type-checker-i...
murderfs··on NP-Overrated
It's the other way around, I think: it's not a problem for most languages because bidirectional type inference with overloading is NP-hard. It'd be nice to have, but it's impossible to implement in a way that's reliably fast, so it's not even considered as an option.
murderfs··on NP-overrated
> A few prominent NP-hard problems:

> Type checking (not all type systems)

> I mean, installing packages and type checking can surely be slow. But, at least in my career, I've never seen a galactic blow-up.

Swift was infamous of having exponential time type inference that made expressions like `"foo" + "bar" + "baz" + "qux" + 123` take literal minutes to fail with a compiler error.

murderfs··on Show HN: Gander, an Android file viewer that asks for no permissions
> Apps get to choose what permissions are needed to access their intents, so under Android's security model, really it's Chrome's fault (or whatever browser the user has installed) for exposing an intent that allows apps that don't have the INTERNET permission to exfoltrate data.

You might as well blame the phone for not being encased in concrete and thrown into a well. You might not want your text message application to have the internet permission, but you'd certainly want to be able to open links from it.

murderfs··on Glue bonds to nonstick surfaces and wipes clean with ethanol
> There's a reason smartphone screens use some special mystery glue not CA.

AFAIK, smartphone glues tend to be acrylic adhesives, which are just as brittle as cyanoacrylate. They get around this by not bonding the screen directly to the chassis with the glue, but having the adhesive carried on tape.

murderfs··on Our position on open-weights models
> I don't understand how Anthropic or OpenAI can have overpriced models, yet losing money like there is no tomorrow.

The marginal cost of inference (which is roughly what you're going to pay to a provider that's running an open weight model) doesn't include the cost of training that model.

murderfs··on EU Fines Google $1.02B for Favoring Its Own Services
> Unless you have evidence that they'd have prevented the industry from suggesting/agreeing on a better standard in that timeline, MicroUSB would have made the most sense at the time.

The evidence is the law that they passed for USB-C: https://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/?uri=CELEX%3A...

Mandating a plug means that it is effectively never going to change.

murderfs··on EU Fines Google $1.02B for Favoring Its Own Services
> Eh, on the other hand the EU has now effectively forced usb-c for devices after apple refused to play it clean for years and they still got people who complained (how dare the regulator be opiniated toward tech !).

They almost forced micro USB for devices, which would have been far worse: https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2009/06/10-companies-agree-t...

murderfs··on Glue bonds to nonstick surfaces and wipes clean with ethanol
> “Since ethanol is the main component of hand sanitizer, we believe it is possible to de-bond and recycle the adhesive by using hand sanitizer as a substitute in certain real-world situations,” Aida says.

These sorts of environmental impact blurbs are hilarious. What kind of scenario are they envisioning where someone wants to remove and reuse a specialized adhesive bonding PTFE parts to something, but don't have ethanol on hand and have to fall back to using hand sanitizer?
