mumrah··on WebSocket benchmarks
Not surprised to see Erlang come out on top. As I understand it, this is precisely the type of problem Erlang is good at - doing lots of little lightweight things with minimal overhead.
mumrah··on How Not To Sort By Average Rating
There was an article about this a few years back: http://blog.linkibol.com/2010/05/07/how-to-build-a-popularit...

I've found, in practice, a Bayesian weighted average is easy to implement and pretty effective. It's also a good candidate for "stream" processing (i.e., calculating in a single pass)

mumrah··on 'A Test You Need to Fail': A Teacher's Open Letter to Her 8th Grade Students
As I recall the written portion of AP science exams was like this. No prose necessary - you could just write a bullet list of the required facts and get full credit
mumrah··on Help Reddit build a recommender
I think that, given the volume of users on reddit and the volume of content they interact with, any of the various collaborative filtering techniques would work well at this point.

You could take it a step further and incorporate more than explicit up/down vote features, such as "clicked", "commented", "saved", etc.

Then incorporate some business rules that filter recommendations by subreddits, boost results by time, and now you have a decent recommender.

Easier said than done of course.

mumrah··on Poll: Do you touch-type?
Depends on what I'm doing. If I'm writing out a lot of text, usually I'll stay hovered near the home row keys (but never resting my fingers on them). However, if I'm in vim, my hands spread apart some to give better access to Esc+Ctrl and Shift+:
mumrah··on Id Software Open Source releases on GitHub
Here's a link to the infamous fast inverse square root function: https://github.com/id-Software/Quake-III-Arena/blob/master/c...
mumrah··on Flake: A Decentralized, K-Ordered Unique ID Generator in Erlang
You'd be hard pressed to generate 2^16-1 ids in a millisecond, so yea - it's probably overkill.
mumrah··on What happened to CouchDB's popularity?
If we're comparing CouchDB's popularity to that of MongoDB's, it's simple - 10gen. 10gen has done a very good job generating lots of hype around their product. I believe they have people dedicated to this task (aka, evangelists). CouchBase on the other hand, has not done so well at this.
mumrah··on Throwable 360 degree Panoramic Ball Camera
Shouldn't that be 41,253 deg^2, not 360 deg?

mumrah··on It’s time for Python 2.7
Did not know about set and dict comprehensions - very nifty.
mumrah··on Learn You Some Erlang: Buckets of Sockets
I can't wait for chapters on Mnesia and distributed Erlang. I've been learning Erlang for fun over the past few months and LYSE has been an absolute godsend.

Also looking forward to this in book format

mumrah··on Guy builds nightvision drone to hunt feral pigs
I have some relatives that have the same problem in central Alabama. It got so bad that the local officials have allowed the use of scoped night vision weapons to let farmers hunt the pigs.

Also, this same relative says he doesn't walk around at night without a 0.50 caliber pistol and a shotgun. Apparently these pigs can be pretty unfriendly

mumrah··on A Hodgepodge of Python
izip is the super useful generator counterpart of zip

Also, 2.7 introduced a couple of cool things in collections: OrderedDict and Counter

mumrah··on More information on Google's new web language, Dash
Maybe rather than a new language, we should work towards browser "assembly" code. Lots of modern JavaScript development is in the direction of: write in language X, compile to JS. Would be nice if there was a lower-level target than JS
mumrah··on LevelDB: A Fast Persistent Key-Value Store
Anyone know how LevelDB compares to Voldemort? From a cursory glance, they are identical in their simple API (get, put, delete)
mumrah··on Data Warehousing 101
Hive is a really slick DW tool built on top of Hadoop. It has a SQL-like language and supports typical DW techniques like table partitioning, key clustering, etc.
mumrah··on JSON users: Avoid CSRFs by not using top-level arrays
Generally speaking, all incoming requests should be verified - authorized or not. These days with all kinds of wonderful web frameworks, CSRF protection is pretty simple. Django handles CSRF with a token in a hidden form field: https://docs.djangoproject.com/en/dev/ref/contrib/csrf/
mumrah··on Guy makes a knife from scratch. He has to make a smelter first.

mumrah··on Google: Les Pauls 96th birthday
Ironically, can't play the birthday song due to a lack of B-flat (could be played in G, but not enough notes)
mumrah··on For Science: WhichShiftButton.com
I'm guessing the I use left shift since several of my passwords have capital letters on the LHS of the keyboard.
mumrah··on Redis Lua scripting implemented: how to play with it.
I think there needs to be some way to store scripts on the server. I like the CouchDB method of a storing a view as a special document. Could use a Hash to store the code along with metadata (version, last modified, etc).

That said, if Redis can EVAL a script stored as a String or a Hash->Key, the client can deal with registering and versioning scripts.

Awesome work btw - been looking forward to scripting in Redis for a long time

mumrah··on Hashify.me - store entire website content in the URL
Alternatively, you can use the Data URI Scheme like so:

  >>> "<h1>Hello, World!</h1>".encode('base64').strip('\n')
  'PGgxPkhlbGxvLCBXb3JsZCE8L2gxPg=='
Paste this into your location bar: data:text/html;base64,PGgxPkhlbGxvLCBXb3JsZCE8L2gxPg==

Works in Chrome 10.0

mumrah··on Recommender Systems: We're doing it (all) wrong
Treating ordinal ratings (1-5) as nominal labels is not the best solution, IMO. It's true that the "distance" between each rating is not equal, however disregarding the fact that 4 stars is greater than 3 looses quite a bit of useful information.
mumrah··on Why did Google feel that Google Wave was a good product?
In case anyone didn't know, Wave is now in the Apache Incubator: http://incubator.apache.org/projects/wave.html
mumrah··on Poll: How old are you?
Waited until this morning to respond so I could answer 26-30. Wouldn't want to be counted with all those "early 20-somethings"
mumrah··on JavaScript Interview Question
I create a closure outside of the event registration: http://pastebin.com/igzWkgKF
mumrah··on Introducing AWS Elastic Beanstalk
AWS is not without it's "cool" storage: SimpleDB, S3, RDS. Not to mention, being within AWS with full control of your machines, you can setup any database you'd like.
mumrah··on Diskstore and a new b-tree implementation
I could see one running out of inodes for a sizable dataset. Also, this seems like it would incur a good deal of iowait opening and closing all those fds.
mumrah··on How to fetch URLs in parallel using Python
Seems like it would be easier to use xargs or GNU Parallel.
