Telnet sounds cooler.

Telnet is just a better name though.
mulderc··on Apple Copland D11E4 Booting in the Browser
Based on what has been reported, I don’t think it was all that tough a call to axe it. What to do after that has hard but cancelling Copeland was an obvious decision to make.

I tell everyone to set it to what you find comfortable and then adjust it up a notch.

One thing I do with my students is show them how to adjust text size and have them try out larger sizes. I think a surprisingly large number of people have never even attempted to change the text size on their devices and many can benefit from something different than the defaults.
mulderc··on Minimal Phone 2
I feel like if you are really want to have a minimal phone, you can just use a smart watch now.
mulderc··on Steam Frame starts at $1059
I have tried this in the past and it wasn’t nearly sharp enough but I guess I see people using 1080p screens at work and those make me want to rip my eyeballs out.
mulderc··on XCancel service is suspended until further notice
Maybe it is different elsewhere but I have seen little reason to use X at all and none of the public services or institutions seems to use it all that much. If they do post to it, they are also posting to all the other major social media services.

All the news you want is available elsewhere and often with far less toxic commentary attached.

I have used Siri for years and turning on and off lights has never been an issue.
mulderc··on Julia 1.13 highlights
Same, Julia really does just feel right to me. Which makes sense since I mostly program in R.
mulderc··on Apple Watch Series 12
Apple doesn't generally make products that are for 100% of the market and focuses on specific market segments that it thinks it can make a compelling product. The $800 watch actually does more than what the $1200 Garmin does once you look at all the features available and has enough battery life to cover doing a 100-mile race.

In the end, what I am arguing is that Apple provides a different set of features and provides battery life in the Ultra that covers the needs of most people going outdoors for multiple days. For everyone else, there are plenty of other options available.

mulderc··on Apple Watch Series 12
Few people do those types of races and The ultra 4 can handle the times you are describing.

From apple website: Apple Watch Ultra Workout

Up to 18 hours workout tracking Up to 25 hours Extended Workout tracking Up to 45 hours Max Extended Workout tracking

My experience with the none ultra is that the battery life estimates are spot on.

mulderc··on Apple Watch Series 12
Few people spend a week or more living out of a backpack. The ultra 4 is rated to do 84 hours in low power mode and 45 in workout mode. Few people are going to max that out and those people probably aren’t interested in an Apple Watch and have other priorities.
mulderc··on AirPods 5
It is pretty hard to see in the case and what I found is even when it looked clean, when I used a tool to dig around a bit there was almost always some gunk in there causing the charging issues.
mulderc··on Apple Watch Series 12
Guess it depends. I do trail races (usually 25k and 20-milers) and marathons regularly, and Apple Watch has worked just fine for me and has a lot of other features that I use regularly that are largely not available on Garmin. I also prefer the map app I use on my Apple Watch compared to what my partner uses on his Garmin.
mulderc··on Apple Watch Series 12
The Garmin Forerunner 970 is only $50 cheaper than the Ultra. Then, the Garmin Fenix 9 is more expensive than the Ultra and doesn't have cellular and charges significantly extra for the satellite connectivity.
mulderc··on Apple Watch Series 12
I regularly do long races like marathons and 20 mile trail races and have never had to charge my watch during those events and I am often even streaming music/podcasts from the watch. With an Ultra you should be able to easily do a 12 hour hike.

Having had an Apple Watch since the Series 0, I think Apple wants people to have a ~3-year upgrade cycle. They essentially update the internals one year, the next they come out with some interesting software features, then the next year they do some external design tweaks. Then they repeat.

There is no reason to upgrade every year, or even every two. It is around the 3-year mark where there tends to be enough new features or your battery life is getting bad enough that there is reason to check out the new watches. Even then my mom uses a Series 6 and is very happy with it and actually uses it a fair bit.

mulderc··on Apple Introduces AirPods 5
yeah I loved the tap controls. Would be nice to have both available. My guess is that for many people the "tap" wasn't as accurate as apple would like it to be as I had heard lots of complaints about that not working for people when I was available.

mulderc··on Alberta (Canada) slaps punitive tax on solar panels
It is easier to do with a clear funding stream. Having it happen at point of sale means that funding can keep pace with consumption. Ideally you would also have different fees based on the difficulty of processing the item and also some type of redemption fee to help incentivize people to properly dispose of the items.

Has always seemed like a policy failure to not just charge those fees at the point of sale and then fund a robust waste disposal program for the community.
mulderc··on South African diamond mines are closing due to weak sales and lab-grown stones
Since the company itself didn’t mine diamonds and basically just took the market rate, his estimate was that they could achieve even better profit margins with lab-grown diamonds and would be positioned well even with eventual market competition. Given some other stories he had about the company, it sounds like they were more interested in not rocking the boat than long-term profits.
mulderc··on South African diamond mines are closing due to weak sales and lab-grown stones
I knew someone who was an economist for a major jewelry company and he said ~15 years ago that the writing was on the wall that lab grown diamonds were going to decimate their sales. He wanted them to start promoting them and be the more ethical and green alternative. He did not last long there.

This is a post that only a straight middle-aged white guy could make. I’m also a white middle-aged guy, but being in a same-sex interracial marriage really opens your eyes to the reality of living in America.

Also, there was a time when your neighbors’ politics probably didn’t want to strip you and your family of their rights and citizenship; times have changed a bit.

mulderc··on Apple reveals 'shocking evidence' from ex-employee's MacBook in OpenAI suit
I'm pretty sure Marx has some things to say on this. When your skills live in company-owned agents instead of in your head, you've been alienated from your own labor in a way Marx predicted. This is exactly why companies like Meta have been so aggressive to integrate AI tools into the day-to-day work for their employees. The more your skills live in their systems, the less you can take with you.
mulderc··on Apple reveals 'shocking evidence' from ex-employee's MacBook in OpenAI suit
Your training of a team of agents is a product you developed while working for that company and would be owned by them. You could in theory train a new team of agents after leaving the company, but it could not be trained on anything that isn't in your brain. If you gave it anything, like the old company's live metrics, then you'd be stealing trade secrets. The key difference from you personally learning those skills is that an agent trained on company data turns personal knowledge into a portable, structured artifact, which crosses from "your skill" into something that looks a lot more like company property.
