This is a post that only a straight middle-aged white guy could make. I’m also a white middle-aged guy, but being in a same-sex interracial marriage really opens your eyes to the reality of living in America.

Also, there was a time when your neighbors’ politics probably didn’t want to strip you and your family of their rights and citizenship; times have changed a bit.

You can follow him other places. I believe he is active on mastodon.
mulderc··on Apple reveals 'shocking evidence' from ex-employee's MacBook in OpenAI suit
I'm pretty sure Marx has some things to say on this. When your skills live in company-owned agents instead of in your head, you've been alienated from your own labor in a way Marx predicted. This is exactly why companies like Meta have been so aggressive to integrate AI tools into the day-to-day work for their employees. The more your skills live in their systems, the less you can take with you.
mulderc··on Apple reveals 'shocking evidence' from ex-employee's MacBook in OpenAI suit
Your training of a team of agents is a product you developed while working for that company and would be owned by them. You could in theory train a new team of agents after leaving the company, but it could not be trained on anything that isn't in your brain. If you gave it anything, like the old company's live metrics, then you'd be stealing trade secrets. The key difference from you personally learning those skills is that an agent trained on company data turns personal knowledge into a portable, structured artifact, which crosses from "your skill" into something that looks a lot more like company property.

I love R and the various things people do with it.

Yes, that is a good manager, but in my experience, it is better if the culture of the team is about ensuring everyone has opportunities to grow, build on their strengths, and connect with opportunities. When that is considered the manager’s job, and not the job of every member of the team, people get neglected, and many strengths and opportunities go to waste.

Are you on the investigation committee? Seems we can wait for the independent report before making any claims like that.
mulderc··on Count Binface receives over a quarter of votes in Clacton by-election
Farage was always going to win, but he also ended up losing, as this showed Reform to be weaker than it looked before the election. His vote count was basically the same as the last election with 22,239 yesterday compared to 21,225 in the 2024 election, even though he had no competition from the major parties. Count Binface was able to get 27% of the vote, similar to what the Conservative Party candidate received in 2024.

Farage wanted a huge mandate from the voters and got at best a tepid response and then he didn't even show up for the vote count and cancelled planned events. This was an embarrassment for him and reform and might mean a very likely future by-election could be much more competitive than it was before all of this.

Agree on google, Kagi though is usually better than ai responses. I’m actually a bit annoyed at the new Siri AI as it often does an AI response when I just want a Kagi search.
mulderc··on New cars are getting 1.2cm longer and 0.5cm taller each year
That is around $50k, no way would I ever spend that much on a car.
mulderc··on New cars are getting 1.2cm longer and 0.5cm taller each year
We already barely drive and the car is largely just for groceries and other shopping. We can almost get away without having a car but it was be a bit frustrating and neither of us enjoy biking.
mulderc··on New cars are getting 1.2cm longer and 0.5cm taller each year
BYD also has very reasonably sized cars like the Dolphin.
mulderc··on New cars are getting 1.2cm longer and 0.5cm taller each year
Cars have become absurd. We have an older car, and I occasionally look at what we could replace it with, and everything is huge and expensive. Literally, the only car I have been interested in is from BYD and will never be available in my country.
mulderc··on Microsoft raises Xbox prices by up to 43%
I think that is a much more complex plan than I have seen come out of most corporate planning and promotions.
mulderc··on Microsoft raises Xbox prices by up to 43%
Notice that there is no mention of the gender of the CEO.
mulderc··on Microsoft raises Xbox prices by up to 43%
More found it distracting and irrelevant.
mulderc··on Microsoft raises Xbox prices by up to 43%
I would have. I think the focus on gender would also have been inappropriate.
mulderc··on Microsoft raises Xbox prices by up to 43%
Twice for no good reason, he didn’t bother to mention the gender or age of the CEO.
mulderc··on Microsoft raises Xbox prices by up to 43%
Curious that you focus so much on her gender.
mulderc··on NSF pilots 4-year PhDs with industry research placements
There is no reason to assume it is “more practical” or that it will increase utility for the student. Especially at the graduate level, the deeper you are able to explore a subject and the more you can connect that subject to a broader range of topics the more utility you get from the degree. Less time to finish a degree means you are less able to do that. I would think this will decrease the likelihood of new ideas being developed which will quickly become a problem for society in general. Also no one gets a PhD because it is practical, you get it because you want to explore a topic and push the boundaries of human knowledge.

My states system is very transparent and has many systems for detecting fraud but people on the right claim otherwise and they are either ignorant of how it worked or just lying.
mulderc··on UHF X11: X11 Built for VisionOS and Apple Vision Pro
Without the Lisa we wouldn’t have the Mac. The Vision Pro is a first gen of a new product category for Apple and I fully expect whatever comes from it will be very different than what we have today.
mulderc··on UHF X11: X11 Built for VisionOS and Apple Vision Pro
The Apple Lisa was introduced at around $10k (~$32k in today’s dollars). I do agree it is expensive but not historically out of line for a version one of a new product category for the company.
mulderc··on Microsoft new Outlook takes 10 seconds to do what Outlook Classic does instantly
I have always been amazed at how outlook just seems to always get worse. When I first used it decades ago I found it awful but it had a logic to it, now it is worse and makes no sense in the current world of options.
mulderc··on Linux/M68k
I would imagine there are actually more 68k devices out there than 486 and, I am told, the 68k architecture is much more enjoyable to work with.
mulderc··on Cars collect a startling amount of data about you
I live in the pacific NW and feel that we do largely have those but people don't know about them or don't want to use them. For example, the easiest way for me to get to Portland/Seattle/Vancouver is by far the train. In none of those cities would I recommend driving as public transit is better in almost all cases. I live in a medium sized city and even here we only drive about once a week. So it is totally possible but it takes some additional planning and tradeoffs that many people don't want to do.
mulderc··on Cars collect a startling amount of data about you
Given how insane people are driving today, I sort of want a car to snitch on bad drivers.
mulderc··on YouTube to automatically label AI-generated videos
It is wild the type of AI generated videos I have seen on YouTube. Today I saw a short video on the history of OS/2 that I am 99% sure was AI made and I was just left wondering why would someone make that? Is there a market for a video like that?
