muh_gradle··on Asking authors about their own papers
completely necessary.
muh_gradle··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (August 2026)
This is sick.
muh_gradle··on How I use LLMs to learn complex topics
> In plan mode (using CC, or OpenCode) I ask a model to build the foundational knowledge for X topic.

Makes sense.

> I ask it to review the accuracy of the knowledge base it built in the previous step.

Ooookay that sounds good.

> I proceed asking it to build a simulation of that topic in a low-poly, Rollercoaster Tycoon-like animation.

wat.

muh_gradle··on The Joy of Folding Bikes
I live in NYC and I was tempted to buy a Brompton but ended up not doing so in the end. A friend of mine that always lives in the city said he regretted his because it's surprisingly heavy and bulky even when folded.
muh_gradle··on Will vibe coding end like the maker movement?
noooo we have to go back to stackoverflow to feel small.
muh_gradle··on Myocardial infarction may be an infectious disease
I'm curious how you managed to get access to testing centers in NYC. I thought there was a law that restricted this last I checked.
muh_gradle··on TikTok goes dark in the US
Don't bother, it's always crickets on this one. China doesn't play by the rules in literally anything and "well that's too bad".
muh_gradle··on Shopify discourages meetings by shaming employees with cost calculator
I used to feel this way as well. But meetings can spiral out of control. In my previous company, my stand ups were taking 30 min minimum and sometimes up to an hour. At one point, I was looking at 3 hours of meetings a day. As an IC, I felt pretty powerless because it was my EM that was making these decisions.
muh_gradle··on Kelly Rowland couldn't have used the =HYPERLINK() function to message Nelly
This is what the Internet is for.
muh_gradle··on PoisonGPT: We hid a lobotomized LLM on Hugging Face to spread fake news
Poor comparison
muh_gradle··on Being “rockstars”: when software was a talents/creatives industry
> Turns out reading HN comments is not a good way to run a company. Who would have thought?

Literally everyone thought this, and probably even the talentless hacks that you hired. Strange that you had to create a throwaway account to figure this one out.

muh_gradle··on Being “rockstars”: when software was a talents/creatives industry
Why hire these people then
muh_gradle··on New York City will charge drivers going downtown
> Penn Station is fine.

Yeah you either don't live in NYC, or you just have a lower standard for basic hygiene. But let's agree to disagree.

muh_gradle··on New York City will charge drivers going downtown
Have you ever visited the 155th station? Maybe you should actually try living in the city before talking. Or maybe Penn station which is next to the biggest methadone clinic in the city. If you think that I'm saying the station is literally covered from floor to ceiling with feces and syringes, then no that's not what I'm saying. But maybe you're just so comfortable with the griminess that it doesn't bother you.
muh_gradle··on New York City will charge drivers going downtown
I live in NYC, have taken the tube when I lived in London. I've also lived in other cities like Seoul, Tokyo with superior public transportation. The "aesthetics" aspect that you describe is an incredible understatement. The nearest MTA station is covered in feces and used syringes and I'm not exaggerating. Trains are constantly late. Apparently building a barrier and a gate on the platform is a 10 year, trillion dollar project. I have to put my back to a wall because I'm worried some crazy person will push me onto the track. Yeah, I wouldn't concur with the statement on MTA being so functional.
muh_gradle··on Ban all gambling adverts, say more than half of Britons
Sports betting has gotten out of control. I used to be an avid UFC and NBA fan, but the constant betting lines being pushed has really hurt sports.
muh_gradle··on I Quit Reddit in 1 Day
Agree. I think reddit will eventually die like Digg in a few years. I've been on reddit for 15 years now. It's been getting steadily worse.
muh_gradle··on Incompetent but Nice
Context is important. There's a way to say that nicely like sending that person a DM to let them know. And then maybe send a note to the team chat if the rest of the team need to know and it would be a blocker.

But your friend should also have less of an ego about it and accept responsibility.

That being said, I've been in team environments where the language felt personal and like I was being thrown under the bus unnecessarily. So I've been on both sides.

muh_gradle··on Ivy League Prices Are Pushing $90k a Year
Oh I'm sure it has. But I think not taking on $200k in debt was worth it. 10+ years later, I don't regret my decision.
muh_gradle··on Ivy League Prices Are Pushing $90k a Year
I was set to go to an Ivy League school 12 years ago and a couple years after the 08 recession. Back then, tuition, combined with room & board came out to $50k a year. I ended up backing out and following a less conventional path because I couldn't afford tuition. It's hard to imagine that we're now seeing $90k a year now in 2023. It's just absolutely ludicrous. College in this country is a scam.
muh_gradle··on Half of Black High School Students in the Bay Area Can Barely Read
You are nothing more than a racist and you should feel ashamed of what you are.
muh_gradle··on Half of Black High School Students in the Bay Area Can Barely Read
No that's a terrible idea.
muh_gradle··on Law school dean discusses recent protest, outlines next steps
If Tirien Steinbach was acting on good faith to de-escalate, she wouldn't stop saying "is the juice worth the squeeze" to the speaker ad nauseum. I watched the 9 minute video of her speaking uninterrupted. In fact she loves asking "is the juice worth the squeeze" so much to the point that it becomes a subtitle in her Wall Street Journal article (https://www.wsj.com/articles/diversity-and-free-speech-can-c...).

That's not a good faith attempt at de-escalation in that moment nor do I believe she was ever trained to de-escalate in such a manner. It's a prepared, written piece of dramatic, performative theater and she wanted a stage to deliver her thoughts.

muh_gradle··on Law school dean discusses recent protest, outlines next steps
This comment itself is in such bad faith that I don't even know where to begin. Imagine this. A progressive event was taking place in which a progressive speaker didn't get to do their planned talk. Instead an administrator gave their pre-written notes (literally printed) and went into a diatribe admonishing the intended speaker when their job was to help moderate the event. Are you seriously telling me that this was appropriate?
muh_gradle··on Law school dean discusses recent protest, outlines next steps
It was not in good faith. She delivered prepared remarks and basically hijacked the event to do so instead of doing her job. She was not doing her job in good faith.
muh_gradle··on Triplebyte acquired by Karat
I've used Triplebyte the past few months. It hasn't been a good experience to put it lightly. The idea for it sounded nice 4 or 5 years ago, but they've just pivoted in a poor direction.
muh_gradle··on Amazon will require employees return to the office 3 days a week
Yes "all" is the important word there.
muh_gradle··on Amazon will require employees return to the office 3 days a week
I'm not tied to FAANG. It's been pretty bad for me. 6 YOE looking for mid and senior roles all over.
muh_gradle··on Amazon will require employees return to the office 3 days a week
As one of the comments say, employers really do have all the leverage right now.
muh_gradle··on Reddit Staffers Who Lost Jobs Livid at Being Painted as Low Performers
This is an irrelevant distinction to be made for reddit in 2023. Reddit is profiting off of work from unpaid moderators, who do have a significant say in reddit user experience. And there are a small number of power users that moderate many of the largest subreddits and then some.
