muffa··on Ask HN: Which browser do you use and why?
Firefox, easy to use and modern. I started using it because I found it hard(Impossible?) to install uBlock on my phone, tried Firefox out and it was super easy to install uBlock that is was forced me to change.

Look here! An engineer with around 4 YOE. Mostly been focusing on the backend(RestAPI, infrastructure, databases) side of things but als comfortable to solve problems on the frontend(web and mobile) as well. Been working as large companies as well as mid+size and small ones.

Looking to work with a team that values code-quality and testing as well as an occasional cold beer during happy-hour.

Please send me an email and I will be more than happy to share my résumé, my current company frequently checks this page hence me being a bit anonymous

muffa··on Ask HN: How do you run better meetings?
What worked the best in my experience is to have an agenda. Having an agenda with time-slots for each bullet point makes it easier for everyone to get their voices heard instead of having a lone ranger talking nonstop about their favorite subject for 1h non-stop.

In short: - Have an agenda with time-slots - The meeting organizer is the one in charge of sticking the meeting to the agenda. When someone goes off-topic steer the conversation back to the topic. Be strict and ruthless about this (In a nice way ofc :) ) - Avoid the small-talk that can be done before or after the meeting, not everyone in a meeting wants to know about how many goals you're kid score this last Saturday. - Take notes for each bullet-point in the agenda, actions points could be make a jira-task for this, contact John Doe about budget changes etc. - After the meeting share the meeting notes with everyone, tag people in the notes so they get re-informed of their tasks after the meeting.

That usually does the trick for me, this template can ofc not be applied to all kinds of meetings, read-the-room.

muffa··on Looking for samples of great PR reviews
Here is some documentation about how google does their reviews. I think it is pretty good https://github.com/google/eng-practices/blob/master/review/r...
muffa··on Ask HN: What are your goals for 2021?
- Play less video games and use that time to read more

- Exercise

- Less takeout since I love cooking that is what I should do instead of being lazy :D

muffa··on Ask HN: What podcasts do you like listening to?
I just started to listen to "Science VS" a podcast which tries to see what science says about different topics. For example anti-vaccination, what does science say about what kind of harm vaccine can cause what's the pros of vaccines. And in the end of each episode they present the number of citations used to create each episode.
muffa··on How a British Covid-19 vaccine went from pole position to troubled start
This is interesting, the article suggest the vaccine at a half dose might be 90% effective for people below the age of 55. And might be more effective then previously thought for people above the age of 55 using half dose as well. Good news this means more vaccine is available to the public
muffa··on How a British Covid-19 vaccine went from pole position to troubled start
It does not have the same strict criteria in terms of keeping it at a very cold temperature which makes it interesting for developing countries.
muffa··on Ask HN: Former engineers, how did you transition your career to software?
Got a bachelor in Nanotechnology and a master in high frequency electronics, when it was time to hit the job market I realized there was none for someone like me.

Started to teach myself programming, started with CS50, got a job. More as an engineer then sw-developer, taught myself python and machine learning in my free time. Transitioned to lead a project with big AI focus also was the lead dev. Switched companies a couple of times since then but still today I try to do a online course or to read a book, article etc.

I guess I will always feel like I need to fill the academic gap of not studying CS in university.

Also a course I think is amazing that will give you good knowledge of one of the most popular frontend frameworks and some background knowledge in databases and backend.

muffa··on Ask HN: Is truth a basic human right?
yes.

No, we should not accept journalists being killed it is their job to find the truth when people of countries etc does not want you to know the truth.

Why is the truth important? It is a democratic cornerstone, the people we have elected are working for us and shall report to us just as basic as that. When you don't get access to the truth or get misinformation you are taken away your democracy as you see in countries like in example Russia, China and USA.

muffa··on Ask HN: What do companies WITHOUT a whiteboard interview ask?
I've had interviews with take home assignment, nothing to big, like refactor and write unit-test.

Other interviews have been more a conversation about my resume, like it said I worked at X company with Z, Y technologies and just had a conversation about that.

Honestly I think this is enough, if someone managed to study at a university for 5 years get an engineering degree hold similar positions as the one you are applying to, why do whiteboarding, take-home etc. You can tell rather quick when you have a casual conversation if the applicant knows what they are talking about and also if you would like to work together. This is usually something you can tell after 5-10 minutes talking to each other :)

muffa··on Tesla hacker reveals what driver-facing camera is looking for
So having worked in the space of driving facing cameras here are my 2 cents.

- Why use it? If you have the car driving autonomous and you want the driver to take over, you need to know if they are able to take over or not (sleeping)

- Placement The placement of the camera needs to be well below the head, otherwise you will not be able to fully see the eyes and also not be able to tell if a person has it's eyes open or not. This is more true for Asian people.

The placement of this camera shows a lot of the inside of the car compared with other OEMs. This is an interesting feat and could for example be used if you see the temp in the car incrase during parking you might want to turn on the AC if a child or animal is left in the car.

muffa··on Ask HN: What podcasts do you recommend CS/geek related?
Software engineering daily - A daily pod of around 1h per episode every day a person from a company/startup/OSS is interviewed about their product and or company. Can be quite heavy from time to time but you always learn something new Talk python to me - Great show about python, feels a bit lighter and the talks varies from interviews to more rants about the python community python bytes - Same as above darknet diaries - Documentary style about hacks etc.

muffa··on Ask HN: Favorite Nonfiction Books of 2019?
Why we sleep - Deep-dive in why we sleep and what to do to sleep better

Born a crime - Follow Trevor Noah in his early life in South Africa.

muffa··on Ask HN: What are you thankful for?
Not even close! (Sweden) Do you have the same perks in Bangladesh? :)
muffa··on Ask HN: What are you thankful for?
Sweden!
muffa··on Ask HN: What are you thankful for?
Thankful to grow up in country where hospitals are free(I have never needed medical attention but close family members) and higher-education is paid for so I could study for 6 years without stressing about money.
muffa··on Ask HN: What is your morning routine?
Usually: 07:00 - Alarm goes off 07:15 - If I exercised the night before I go get dressed(Got very little hair on my head, benefit: No more morning hair) 07:30 - Leave for work

I stopped eating breakfast, I just drink coffee when I feel hungry until lunch around 11:30, doing this I actually feel more energetic.

2-3 times a week I head to the gym before heading to work, this actually is the best routine, you get to work all pumped up, full of energy and your brain feels like it is running on steroids!

muffa··on Ask HN: What are some non-FAANG companies with great engineering culture?
Ericsson
muffa··on Ask HN: What was the most absurd/funny statement that you ever heard on meeting?
Overheard a meeting where some project people were talking(you know the kind) they were talking about some project being done in C++ but kept referring it to CC++. True meeting engineers!
muffa··on Ask HN: Linux vs. Mac for Developer
I got to admit that linux subsystem is actually pretty good. However using git in the subsystem on a repo you have outside is slow, we are talking 10 seconds to do a git log...
muffa··on Ask HN: Why does software development suck so much in finance?
I was thinking exactly the same! The bullets he listed, I recognize every single one of them and I work for a self-driving car company.
