mtrycz··on A Postgres Perspective on MongoDB
There's also additional considerations that weren't touched in the article, and they're not functional but architectural.

Sometimes you have payloads that can't fit in a traditional RDBMS, and SQL/Relational don't cluster/shard well.

NoSQL bring convenient clustering/sharding to your data. Anecdote: an old team chose Cassandra solely for its admin-tools (which are really cool), even if we didn't actually need a NoSQL; I lost that battle, but I least we all learned something.

mtrycz··on Why didn't Common Lisp fix the world?
While i do like the the idea of DSLs and they certainly do have a place, what I would love to have is to be able to enforce a strict subset of a language in a piece of code.

Where first there was discipline and hardly passed on conventions, there now would be statically enforced rule coerction.

I deeply believe that the utility of language is not in what it enables, but in what it forbids. For example Clojure and Rust have neat mechanisms to deal with mutability, where you need something extra to mutate a value. Contrast this to C where you need to go extra lenghts to make things const (ie nobody'll do it).

Is this even possible without writing your own tools?

mtrycz··on Apache PDFBox – A Java PDF Library
I see that they have released 2.0 lately, but can't find any dates, nor the improvements over 1.x. Is this the news? A press release would be better, probably. It's not [Show HN], it's an established Apache project, so I don't get what the news is here.
mtrycz··on $ cat ~/myfile | curl -X PUT --upload-file “-” https://transfer.sh/myfile.txt
I think the newness about this is that they've released the code on github under MIT, so you can self-host the service if you want. I think none of the othe rprojects mentioned here have are opensource or have a slef-hosted version.
mtrycz··on Which Type of Exercise Is Best for the Brain?
I don't do BJJ, but am familiar with it and have done some judo.

In contrast to stand-up striking arts, you have limited possibilities of movement when "hugging" your opponent on the ground, so you need to do have a strategy, do some planning, and have to adapt rapidly to changing conditions. Like "what move can I do in the current position?", "what moves could my opponent pull off form this position?", "what moves could I do if I changed to this other position?", etc. etc.

I do believe that you won't find any better than anecdotal evidence for this subject, tho. Expecially if you'd need to compare between arts.

mtrycz··on The Leica Q: A six month field test
The article contains referral links for amazon at the bottom.

Just saying.

mtrycz··on The NSA’s machine learning algorithm may be killing thousands of innocent people
The title actually reads like your usual clickbait.

Unfortunately, it is also tragically accurate, wrt the info in the article.

mtrycz··on GitLab 8.0 released with new looks and integrated CI
The messaging integration certainly looks really good, we're trying out Let's Chat, but development is kinda slow (and we don't have the time to contribute). How does GitLab CI compare to Jenkins? Will I be able to substitute it for simple and complex projects?

Is there a slender version of GitLab for small computers like the RaspberryPi? All of the dependencies kinda hog/slow it down, and I don't really need realtime performance. I've grown fond of the interface (at work), and would like to use it for my hobby projects.

PSA: With climate scientists having 97% consensus that climate change is mandmade (NB not wheather it exists or not), and the remaining 3% been shown to be seriously biased (to say the least) and having ties to interested parties, there is no such thing a a "climate change skeptic". There is only "climate change denier".

Thank you for your attention.

It says "how it works", but not even "what it is".

Then it's ridden with finance gergon I can't relate with (I tried).

What's this all about?

mtrycz··on Firefox Bug 111373 - don't allow animated site icons
Yeah, yeah, everyone loves to hate on Firefox.

Still, if you're gonna do some shaming, pick something serious, there are some serious things to pick form iirc.

mtrycz··on Firefox Developer Edition
I vote for this.

Websockets have been around for years, and are becoming normal in day to day internet. Mozilla was one of the biggest promotors. I'm using them more and more.

It just doesn't make sense that I can not debug websockets in Firefox.
