Bitcoin was derailed from being peer to peer electronic cash to this strange "store of value" that doesn't store value. It heppened almost six years ago, back in 2017.

mtrycz2··on Signs of de-dollarisation emerging, Wall Street giant JPMorgan says
> Bitcoin: a peer to peer electronic cash system

If you're buying into something that isn't "a great currency" then you are being lied to, and the thing that you're buying has been derailed from the original plan.

My pet conspiracy theory is that is is wired to please the user, to get better coverage from the media and social media.

mtrycz2··on Cheating is All You Need
It can appear reasonably smart on the surface, but all it is is a stochastic parrot. It cannot reason with you about the code.

To best illustrate what I mean, watch this chess match[0] it's quite riveting.

Since it read millions of matches, it can predict a legal move most of the time, and even some good moves some of the time, but it cannot "understand" the rules of chess, and makes some hilariously illegal moves, especially if the match lasts longer.

Looks like it. The linked article does NOT show what HN title does. Even the original title does not imply what the HN title does. The article is about one specific area of the brain, which is not the most obvious difference.

So it is a sandboxed, abstract filesystem, not rw access to my actual filesystem?

The first lines of the description say

I don't want this in my browser. Why would anyone want this? How do I disable it?
mtrycz2··on GPT-4
Have you seen it play chess[0]? It's pretty funny.

It doesn't really "get" the rules of chess, but it has seen lots of matches and can do some "linguistic" predictions on the next move. It gets hilariously lost pretty fast, tho.

mtrycz2··on The end of Type 1 fonts
It's a common problem on HN to have too little context. Even in the tech space, there is so many subdomains, that it's easy to get confused. It also doesn't help that often (not in this case, tho) writers assume you already know what they are talking about.

A couple of words of context (or maybe a "category tag"?) would be so much helpful, most of the time.

mtrycz2··on The good delusion: has effective altruism broken bad?
The whole thing reminds me of "I, Robot", when the AI realizes that the greater good for humanity can't care for themselves, it is to be ruled by the AI for good.

This is the kind of vibe I get from this writeup, and the level of separation from humanity these people operate.

mtrycz2··on Canon EOS R7 Disassembly and Teardown
It's all tradeoffs. Reflex cameras are pretty standard, also the electronics have been around for a longer time now. But there is a balance in getting things to

* have all the basic and possibly premium features

* be rather compact and portable

* have the right weight

* possibly be weather/waterproof

* process images fast (including video)...

* ...don't drain battery in minutes...

* ...but also don't overheat in users' hands

* etc

* Urban stealth

* Image processing

* Fashion contagion

* Music and rhythm

mtrycz2··on An unexpected revival of Firefox OS
I owned a Firefox phone and it was awesome. It had understandably few apps, but it worked really well.

One thing I really appreciated was that it was conceived as an appliance rather than as an attention grabber. We tolerate our phones being attention grabbers, but unrightfully so, it doesn't have to be this way. The default UI even had the saturation toned down, to not be so much in your face.

It was pretty capable for an 80 Euro phone. It was the only smartphone I owned that I could feel vibrate in my pocket. I concede that Android ran better on it, but it's not like FirefoxOS ran bad, on the contrary.

I unfortunately lost it, and it was about the time it was being discontinued. I would probably get another one. Heck, I would get one now, if they were still around.

Anecdote: friend had a KaiOS and it was pretty aweful.
