mtnGoat··on AI companies cause most of traffic on forums
Just to clarify Claude data is not years old, the latest production version is up to date as of April 2024.
mtnGoat··on AI companies cause most of traffic on forums
Some of these ai companies are so aggressive they are essentially dos’ing sites offline with their request volumes.

Should be careful before they get blacked and can’t get data anymore. ;)

mtnGoat··on Amazon forces sellers to divulge COGS, won't reimburse other costs
That’s a fact, not a personal opinion. Unless the damage was done in malice it’s not a crime. It’s the owners negligence for not protecting their property

No need to downvote just because y’all don’t know the law, lol!

mtnGoat··on Amazon forces sellers to divulge COGS, won't reimburse other costs
If it was done with malice, you could be prosecuted, malicious mischief is a crime. Damage by accident no, not in any of the 50 states.
mtnGoat··on Amazon forces sellers to divulge COGS, won't reimburse other costs
No it’s not fair at all, if you break something you don’t actually have to buy it. It’s the merchants liability for allowing things to be within reach of customers. Just walk out and don’t negotiate at all.
mtnGoat··on Show HN: Cut the crap – remove AI bullshit from websites
I got a thank you email the other day after a meeting that was clearly written by AI, it was a real turn off. English was the authors second language, but she does public speaking in English, so I know she has decent command. Regardless, id still rather get an authentic heart felt thank you in broken English then a fake one. It comes off as inauthentic.
mtnGoat··on Americans see their savings vanish in Synapse fintech crisis
Probably whoever gets it the longest just failed to properly reinvest their ill gotten funds into legal advice.
mtnGoat··on FTC to launch investigation into Microsoft's cloud business
I’m not confused. Thank you though.
mtnGoat··on FTC to launch investigation into Microsoft's cloud business
As I said this is close to a majority of states by count, but far from a majority by population. Read better. I guess you don’t think we should be mindful of false information about sex with minors being written as fact on the Internet and should go uncorrected. Check! Me, I don’t feel that way, I’ll correct it.
mtnGoat··on FTC to launch investigation into Microsoft's cloud business
You really should check your facts on that first statement my friend. Frankly you are dead wrong and should not be spreading this kind of false info, it’s dangerous to minors. Only 24 states have age of consent below 18, and a number of those have restrictions on age gaps between participants. And of those 24 states that don’t come close to covering “the majority” of the population of the United States.
mtnGoat··on Hackers use ZIP file concatenation to evade detection
Nice remix of an old technique.

I remember file packing exes together for fun and profit back in the day.

mtnGoat··on Meta Fined $843M by EU over Marketplace Ads
Seems similar to a lesson alphabet learned in the EU a while back.
mtnGoat··on Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy to Lead Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE)
How long ago and what has the outcome been? Curious to start learning more abut what we might be walking into.
mtnGoat··on Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy to Lead Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE)
It will exist for roughly 18 months. January 2025 to July 2026. Thrice as much time to do the “work”.
mtnGoat··on Show HN: Stretch My Time Off – An Algorithm to Optimize Your Vacation Days
Even a simple weighting might work… “do you prefer your time off to be near major public holidays?” Or “which season do you prefer to travel?” Then with the 4 day weeks accordingly. The results it gave me skipped over a lot of other federal holidays and seemed to focus all time off at years end, when I definitely do not want to travel. Which really it just needs to look for weeks with a single day off to buddy up with.
mtnGoat··on How I ship projects at big tech companies
Thank you for looking that up, I was on mobile and being lazy. So it looks like he’s done some decent sized stuff.
mtnGoat··on All the data can be yours: reverse engineering APIs
Things on sidewalks are not free to take because you can touch them. Just like things in your front yard are not. Just because you can get to it, doesn’t mean it’s yours to take and act upon at will.
mtnGoat··on How I ship projects at big tech companies
Articles like this are off to me… you’re going to need to quantify and qualify your claims of things otherwise I don’t know how much credence to throw ya.

“I ship at big tech” is a broad statement… as a reader, I need elaboration or I tend to question the rest of the article. Is this just a guy bloviating or does he really know his stuff? And bold claims need to be back up.

mtnGoat··on All the data can be yours: reverse engineering APIs
Same could be said about things in your front yard?

I’m not sure taking liberties with things you don’t own, is always the best policy, nor is putting the entire responsibility on the owner.

I don’t think this is something you can boil down to a simple black and white.

mtnGoat··on All the data can be yours: reverse engineering APIs
I’m just not sure jealousy is the correct word for this though. Most systems don’t like these kinds of things for a number us reasons.
mtnGoat··on I quit Google to work for myself (2018)
I know at my last job I closed any resumes that had Google on them. They generally didn’t do well at startups in my opinion, the scope and responsibilities are too broad and there is no where to hide. And the ones I did hire tended to want to make everything look the way it did at Google.
mtnGoat··on Toronto crypto company CEO kidnapped, held for $1M ransom before being released
You can buy crypto for cash on Craigslist. Don’t need to be wealthy. You’d probably need “connections” to buy six figures or more off market.
mtnGoat··on Toronto crypto company CEO kidnapped, held for $1M ransom before being released
True, but not in this mental exercise where the person is being held hostage. They would still need to liquidate assets and transfer to crypto, and also need connections to this type of seller. In that case, that’d probably already have it.
mtnGoat··on I attended Google's creator conversation event, and it turned into a funeral
in fact the standing weekly meetings were cancelled after we got to the point where the entire half hour was consumed with going over all the AIs their end had they we were still waiting for answers on. Since we never got any, we cancelled the meetings as wasteful.
mtnGoat··on I attended Google's creator conversation event, and it turned into a funeral
I've been invited so two similar events over the past couple decades and one company I worked for had standing weekly meetings with Google. All I can say is my experience is pretty much they same, they lure you in wanting info and to help you, but don't give any answers and just keep wanting more info. In the end they didn't unblock us and in my opinion built a lot of what we shared into their systems. It was a knowledge theft exercise in my opinion, was NOT in any way meant to help anyone but Google.
mtnGoat··on Buy payphones and retire
Great theory lesson, but… You are basing all of this on a non cash world. Cash is still king in many parts of society that aren’t entirely on the up and up. These are the OGs of this sport and definitely aren’t incompetent. Plus sale of goods is very easy to fake if you have multiple parts of the vertical covered. things don’t make sense if you’ve never done them.
mtnGoat··on Wikipedia article blocked worldwide by Delhi high court
The fact they pulled it means I will no longer be donating. I can’t support orgs that won’t go the distance to protect a free and open internet when that’s what they argue for.
mtnGoat··on America's new millionaire class: Plumbers and HVAC entrepreneurs
Well of course producing your own wood would be cheaper than paying market rate. Lumber growers are a business too, they grow where it’s cheap and ship to market that pays best. A local guy not getting it for a discount isn’t incestuous, it’s capitalism working as intended.
mtnGoat··on America's new millionaire class: Plumbers and HVAC entrepreneurs
It’s very regional, for instance in Quincy Washington they are actively constructing well over a million square feet of data centers. Each one has hundreds of electricians working in it. My personal friend is clearing $350k before union benefits the last three years as an electrical foreman. They work 6 days a week 3 weeks a month and work 10 hour days in a really small town. Union work, prevailing wage, over time and completion bonuses increase the pay in these jobs to be triple what a local electrician would make doing house calls. Of the 500 heads my friend oversees, most are not even from this state. But… once those data centers are done being built the economy will crash for many local business rely on those high paying jobs. Restaurants, hotels, etc are hit hardest. And a lot of the workers will to another “hot” region, or go back to where they came from and earn half. I know a few that “retired” by 40, making $300k living in a trailer on site, in a town with nothing to do after 8, gives you a lot of chance to save money.

How do you think compensation would/could be handled? Do you think it would set a bad/good precedent?
