mthreat··on Language popularity: It’s not about search engine result counts
One metric is job postings containing the language:

edit: fixed spelling of clojure ;)

mthreat··on Facebook acquires Instagram
For $50M the investors didn't buy 100% of the company. They bought something around 10% (assuming the valuation was $500M)

thanks, I updated mine with this one :)

mthreat··on Show HN: API Jobs, a new job site focused on APIs
Congrats on going live, looks good!
mthreat··on TechCrunch’s Picks: The 10 Best Startups From Y Combinator Demo Day
Congrats, carsabi! I know I've spent too much time screwing with craigslist' crappy search. I just wanted to search across every craigslist in the US for a certain (rare) car. I had to setup like 200 RSS feeds to accomplish it.
mthreat··on Consistent Hashing
I remember someone pointing out your AudioGalaxy server cluster at the north austin datacenter (I think it's the one that became SunGard). I just said "wow". You still in Austin?
mthreat··on YouPorn: Symfony2, Redis, Varnish, HA Proxy... (Keynote at ConFoo 2012)
Does anyone know what YP is using for their fulltext search?
mthreat··on Optimizing Solr (Or How To 7x Your Search Speed)
These are good points. Solr/Lucene tuning is an art, so much so that some search consulting companies charge tens (or hundreds) of thousands of dollars for these services. That's the value proposition of Searchify's hosted search - if you just want search, you shouldn't have to worry about shards, commit strategies, batching, GC, etc. You just want to add your documents, search them, and get great, fast results, without having to become a Lucene expert in the process.

If this sounds interesting, check us out at http://www.searchify.com - We offer true real-time, fast hosted search, without requiring you to learn the innards of Solr or Lucene.

mthreat··on Optimizing Solr (Or How To 7x Your Search Speed)
There's no formal relationship, although I have met several of the IndexTank guys and they're a cool group. And Searchify is based on the IndexTank open-source project.
mthreat··on Optimizing Solr (Or How To 7x Your Search Speed)
I'd love to have them try out Searchify's hosted search and see how fast it is. The key to fast search is RAM, which is why we run our search indexes from RAM (not cheap), and most queries are served within 100ms. If you're the author of the blog post, please contact me, chris at searchify, if you'd like to do this comparison, and I'll set you up with a test acct.
mthreat··on Searchify hits a million queries a day to IndexTank search API
We are running the IndexTank open-source project. We link to those white papers on indextank.com - we plan to either update those white papers or remove them. thanks for pointing it out
mthreat··on Searchify hits a million queries a day to IndexTank search API
Sorry about that, I see what you mean. Wasn't trying to mislead, I just suck at titles :)
mthreat··on $1.5 billion: The cost of cutting London-Toyko latency by 60ms
Now I don't feel so bad about spending a month of my time to make our search results page 40ms faster at Indeed.com
mthreat··on 500,000 Requests/Sec – Modern HTTP Servers Are Fast
I'm interested in more info on your linux TCP tuning, especially how you decided to tcp_tw_recycle and tcp_fin_timeout (and how you decided setting the former to 1 is safe)
mthreat··on EC2 On-Demand vs Reserved Instance Cost Savings Calculator
What would be cool is another column containing the number of months after which it makes no economic sense to stay with on-demand pricing, even if you never use the instance after that point. In other words, "if you're going to use this instance for at least 4 more months, you might as well get a reserved instance".

mthreat··on How I Built It: Dropbox
Most interesting answer, in my opinion:

"Mr. Ferdowsi: The problem that we're trying to solve is a problem that only an independent company can solve. We want to let you use a Mac, or Windows PC, or iPad, or Android, without having to think about any of the technical details. It isn't a problem any of those larger companies is going to be as inclined to solve in the same way we are."

mthreat··on Yammer CEO won't hire anyone from Yahoo who doesn't quit in next 60 days
If Jeff Dean went to work at Yahoo for 61 days and applied at Yammer, he'd get the job.
mthreat··on New Reddit CEO reporting for duty
You're correct - the current search only searches the titles. This is one of the most common complaints, and one that we would love to help reddit fix. One challenge is there are 5 to 10 times as many comments as there are threads. So a search index for that would be much larger, require more machines and RAM, and in the end it would be quite a bit more expensive for reddit to offer.
mthreat··on New Reddit CEO reporting for duty
I'd love to hear your ideas for improving search. IndexTank improved reddit's search greatly when they took it over, but IndexTank is shutting down in one month. At Searchify, we would love to power reddit's search, and are willing to spend a good amount of resources to make sure the results are good.
mthreat··on Spire.io is out of beta
Hopefully constructive criticism here:

I've looked around your site, and I'm still not sure what you offer. I've figured out that you offer APIs, but APIs that do what? Push messages (urban airship)? Search (indextank, searchify)? Geostuff? Video encoding (zencoder)?

I could probably dig into the example libraries and figure it out, but if people don't figure out what you offer pretty quick, many will bail.

mthreat··on Why the cloud isn't for your startup
"However once you're project starts growing, the costs can grow exponentially." [sic]

Exponentially, really? What exponent?

mthreat··on Israel to destroy Palestinians' solar panels
I found it at least as relevant as articles on how to take better naps, which get plenty of upvotes.
mthreat··on Did You Hear We Got Osama?
I would add that the media's job isn't only to entertain you, it's also to keep you worried. Read/watch the news, and ask yourself "what are they trying to make me worry about today?" You'll be surprised.
mthreat··on Be Careful When Comparing AWS Costs...
Agreed. Here's a good relevant blog post by mark maunder challenging the "cloud hype" - http://markmaunder.com/2011/10/31/clouded-vision/

I love some aspects of AWS, but I find it hard to trust them when it comes to the cloud vs. dedicated hosting discussion.

mthreat··on Amazon S3 Price Reduction
This is good news. Now if they would lower their EC2 instance pricing, especially large RAM instances!
