msy··on Google Fiber
I'm finding spideroak superior to backblaze - it actually backs up my entire system rather than skipping /Library & /opt and allows me to backup external drives without needing to have them constantly plugged in. I think the pay-for-what-you-use model allows them to be a lot more flexible.
msy··on Neal Stephenson wants to revolutionize sword fighting video games
Hiro.
msy··on Seriously? Ads?
Why not, it worked out so well for Google with their deep search history, world-beating teams of big data specialists, deep pockets and massive Gmail/Gapps userbase... http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-03-21/google-said-to-reth...
msy··on Back That Gmail Up
I couldn't agree more. Email is essentially the skeleton key to all your other accounts thanks to email reset, even if you use your own domain and don't risk the virtual armageddon of losing both all your mail and your address forever you still risk losing all your mail. Even worse, if your account is hacked you have no effective recourse whatsoever and someone will have access to all your accounts, contacts and email history. I pay for Rackspace mail because when I have a problem, I can call a real phone number and talk to a real human whose interests (company continuing to be paid) are aligned to mine (having a working service).
msy··on Miso Dataset
Nice to see this here! I'm one of the devs so more than happy to answer any questions.
msy··on Meteor meets NoGPL
I think the obnoxious part is not being entirely upfront and clear about what you're looking to do. Sencha make no secret of the fact they're a business, with Meteor you need to infer it from a vaguely worded FAQ point and the licence type.
msy··on Lat/Long to Time Zone API
I'd love to see this open sourced! It'd make a wonderful companion to the great open mapping work being done my Open Street Map and is exactly the kind of thing a community can build on and refine for the good of all.
msy··on Dear Internet: It's no Longer OK Not to Know How Congress Works
IBM's Many Bills (http://manybills.researchlabs.ibm.com/) did much of what you're suggesting. The problem is making people interested and engaged enough to use these tools and push their congresscritters to act in the interest of their constituents rather than their paymasters/lobbyists.
msy··on It Is A Violation Of The Adobe Trademark To Say An Image Was "Photoshopped"
Excuse me while I photochop someone photoshopping themselves giving two fingers to adobe.
msy··on Why Dart is not the language of the future.
Just use inline implicit conversion: "r #{5+3/2}"
msy··on "Hello World" in Dart, compiled to JavaScript
Wouldn't happen to be a Flash dev would you?

I do not want the core technologies on which the web is built owned or controlled by any one company. No matter how you look at it Dart is not a standard, it's not controlled or directed by any open body and its development is not public.

It took a goddamn decade to break Microsoft's endless attempts to own core web technology, if you're happy with another company doing it just because you think they're a 'nice' company you're the fool.

There is a large, public and active effort to solve many of the issues JS has, it's called Harmony. Maybe you should get involved with that instead of jumping on a proprietary bandwagon.

msy··on "Hello World" in Dart, compiled to JavaScript
Sorry but it's been more like

Google: Hey everyone, we have decided the future, here it is, get used to it.

Community: Maybe you should get behind Harmony instead of secretly building replacements to the building blocks of the web and issuing them by imperial decree.

msy··on Businessweek Magazine's Classy Tribute to Steve Jobs
Without a doubt prepared in advance - you'd be incompetent as a news org not to do so. It's still however a fantastically put together thing and to have no ads in there whatsoever is quite a dedication.
msy··on German Chaos Computer Club analyzes and releases government malware
Oh please, the advertising profiles I've seen are only a half-notch above pure entropy. They're about as accurate as the kind of rubbish you see from sentiment analysis on tweets.
msy··on Web apps are dead, long live web apps
Seconding this - Sproutcore 2 is such a different beast to 1.0 it's a pity they share a name. There's a number of concepts, particularly around handling cascades of DOM updates in there that are far more advanced that you'd have to write yourself in backbone.
msy··on Markdown Editor for web developers, on Mac OS X
Why does a text editor and a renderer with a fraction of the complexity of a browser engine require 10.7?
msy··on Client asks for 100% uptime
It's always helpful when clients give unambiguous signs of unreasonable insanity upfront instead of hiding it until you're halfway through the project. It makes running away as far and fast as humanly possible so much easier.
msy··on Cross-Browser Testing Tool Will Rock Your Socks Off
should
msy··on Knockout.js vs Backbone.js
The real competition to Backbone in this space in my mind is Sproutcore 2. At its core it's lightweight enough to be a drop-in replacement but has a vastly more sophisticated approach to handling dom updates, cascades of updates, data bindings and dealing with large sets of data.
msy··on Another Airbnb Victim Tells His Story: “There Were Meth Pipes Everywhere”
I'm starting to think that much like Quora, AirBnB worked because of the nature of its early members and that the model simply doesn't scale.
msy··on TrustFabric - Most ambitious startup ever
That was not there when I wrote that. See google cache. http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:Kyue2dB...
msy··on TrustFabric - Most ambitious startup ever
This requires me not just to absolutely trust trustfabric, but to trust that they're security is bulletproof and that their identity reclamation mechanisms such carefully engineered paragons defence in depth.

Given their admittedly very clear privacy policy does not rule out selling your information in aggregate or in detail nor changing the policy without explicit notification they've fallen before the first hurdle.

We desperately need a neutral provider of cryptographically secure identity, ideally that can be verified against 3rd parties such as banks or passports. The problem is I don't know what the business model for that looks like.

msy··on CSS Lint is harmful
I agree on the large CSS issue, the problem is one of naming rather than one of utility. The tool is of use to a small audience, JSLint is of use to anyone writing really any JS.
msy··on CSS Lint is harmful
JSLint is opinionated but it's hard to argue that anything in there isn't a good idea, even if it isn't necessary. CSSLint is just opinionated.
msy··on Leaftlet - A Lightweight JavaScript Library for Interactive Maps
Unlike Polymaps this also supports IE6 & 7 which is a big win for orgs that have to support a wide range of browsers.
msy··on Companies that make money by distributing misleading versions of VLC
Fake anti-virus software, counterfeit pharmacies, counterfeit products in general, malware of all sorts. Google have been taking their money for years. They have the resources not to. That's pretty shitty behaviour that endangers their users in my book.
msy··on Facebook blocks Google Chrome extension for exporting friends
I doubt there's a legal issue here, just grubby, low-brow behaviour, which is basically par for the course for Facebook.
msy··on The Capacitive Button Cult Must Be Stopped
Because the iphone uses accelerometers and other sensors to work out when the phone is even near your ear when on a call and disbles the screen, both saving battery and disabling input.
msy··on Stealthy Trick Makes Facebook Look Like an Excel Spreadsheet
This isn't meant to stand up to scrutiny (as has already been pointed out). What it is meant to do is generate cred for Diesel, the fashion label gunning for a rebellious image that created (or more accurately paid for the creation of) this. It's mashup-as-advertisement.

This may come as a surprise given the lack of a Disel logo anywhere on the site but this is where something odd happened.

This was available via http://www.bestupidatwork.com/ Now it isn't. Something happened, some kind of dispute or question of ownership and now it's gone but turned up at a different URL. Sans branding.

Either that or two people just happened to make exactly the same tool within a week of each other and one got pulled for some utterly unrelated reason but I'm running with Occam's Razor on this one.

See: http://www.adweek.com/adfreak/diesel-makes-facebook-look-exc... http://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2011/06/hide-y...

msy··on Fitbit users are unwittingly sharing details of their sex lives with the world
And that comment right there is why programmers shouldn't design social networks.
