msy··on Ask HN: Who is hiring right now?
CrowdStrike | UX Designers, UI Engineers, Technical Writers | | Remote USA, UK | Full-time

CrowdStrike is one of the world's leading cybersecurity companies, using cutting edge technology to protect our customers from the most sophisticated adversaries. We IPO'd last year and we aren't slowing down. We're a remote-first organisation (and have been since day one) and distributed across the US & Europe. The UX team is looking for talented designers, writers & engineers to help build interfaces used by our customers to triage & respond to attacks, consume intelligence and manage their environments.

Roles can be found here: https://www.crowdstrike.com/careers/ Happy to answer any questions in thread.

That this data ended up with aggregators doesn't seem too surprising but I'd be genuinely shocked if the source was Apple selling it vs some kind of 3rd party analytics leakage + correlation with other data sources for demographic data. I can't see any evidence of Apple selling it in the complaint.
msy··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (July 2017)
Crowdstrike UI Team | London or US (various or remote) | Full Time

Help detect and prevent the most sophisticated hackers at massive scale. We're a rapidly growing company that just raised another $100M from Google Capital and Warburg Pincus amongst others.

We're looking for JS devs (we use Ember but don't require it for new starters) as well as python/node/devops. Clean code, up to date libraries, simple deployment processes and professional development practices. Drop me a line at alex dot graul at crowdstrike dot com

msy··on Show HN: Tenence – Making Renting Easier
I cannot read the logo, it would be more appropriate for a sci-fi game.
msy··on React-Boilerplate v3: The “JS Fatigue Antivenin” Edition
The adoption of the approach ember-cli took over a year ago by both React & Angular (angular-cli) is to me the strongest validation of the relative architectural maturity of Ember over its competitors.

Ember has demonstrated singular organisational maturity - stable and consistent release process, standardised build tools, high quality documentation, excellent deprecation warnings & clear upgrade paths. It allows teams to focus on delivering value without prevaricating about build pipelines and trust that the whims of the maintainers won't result in months of rewriting at arbitrary intervals.

Equally it's been pressure and progress from React on render speed that's helped push along Ember's Glimmer engine, long may the ecosystem and healthy competition drive innovation!

msy··on On asking job candidates to code
Have you considered that part of the purpose of the challenge might be to filter out particularly arrogant applicants who might be problematic in a team setting?

msy··on Indian Air Force Issues Security Warning; Xiaomi Clears the Air
That exists, it's called an iPhone. I may sound like I'm being facetious but its privacy defaults and possible settings around cookies & local website data, removing plugins and making app permissions requests explicit, transparent & not permitting apps that ask for totally unnecessary ones are leagues in front of the competition.

This isn't to say they're perfect but if you care about your privacy and you're in the 99.9999% that isn't being explicitly targeted by a TLA it's your best choice.

msy··on Avoiding Event Chains in Single Page Applications
It took me a while to come round to it but this kind of madness is something that Ember's event/render loop and implicit property dependency graph makes really, really easy to solve.

People knock Ember for its complexity but in reality it's simply a complete/coherent solution for the kind of problems people like this are iterating towards - and watching their code get more complex as they do.

msy··on London black taxis plan congestion chaos to block Uber
Black cabs have no obligation to pick up fares and will regularly refuse to take trips that they feel are inconvenient or they think will likely result in a return journey without a fare, even after you're in the cab. Want to go south and it's near the end of the driver's shift and he lives north? Back to waiting for you.

This is in comparison to the NYC system where once you're in the cab, they're obligated to take you where you want to go.

msy··on Mi.Mu Glove for Music
(backer) It's worth taking a look at the comparison of existing data gloves on the website - http://theglovesproject.com/data-gloves-overview/ . These aren't the first to try and do this by any means but they are as far as I can see by far the most considered and refined for their purpose, think of it as the iPhone of data gloves.

The combination of flexibility, comfort, precision, being totally wireless & a an impressive sensor combination (individual finger flex in both directions + hand accelerometer & gyro) combined with in-glove haptic feedback mean there's truly incredible potential here for creating entirely new ways of interacting with software.

Like the iPhone, or the iPad, or the iPod it's not that the technology itself is revolutionary or unique but it's the way that the technology has been used to create an amazing product that makes this to me as if not more exciting than things like the Oculus Rift.

msy··on Show HN: Steal back your productivity
There's an older app called Self Control that does this but for a specified time window and cannot be disabled once it's started, including by rebooting. http://selfcontrolapp.com/
msy··on LogMeIn to discontinue free remote access product
Teamviewer's been great for mac & windows for me for a long time.
msy··on Living a High-DPI desktop lifestyle can be painful on Windows
Can we get 'on windows' added to the title? None of this is about high-DPI/Retina displays in general, it's just Windows and Windows ecosystem issues
msy··on Sourcing.io
That they launched with a price tag and functionality for recruiters but nothing to even let developers see the profiles they've assembled, without consent, by scraping public data tells you all you need to know about their respect for engineers.
msy··on Google Shopping: Upload Your Content Without Watermarks or Be Banned
So in short Google wants to use merchant's product images, which they've worked to produce or paid for as generic product images without compensation and if merchants don't like it their account is banned.
msy··on UK Prime Minister: We have put in place Internet filters to block extremism
AAISP are awesome and any self-respecting geek should be using them but they would have no ability to affect filters of this kind, only the optional porn filter, which they do disable.
msy··on Sales Are Colossal, Shares Are Soaring. All Amazon Is Missing Is a Profit
Amazon logistics in the UK at least seems to be a cover for using a variety of no-name low-cost couriers, which for me at least has resulted in most deliveries now involving at least one fake 'delivery attempt' and needless runaround. I'm starting to buy things elsewhere as a result, it's not worth the hassle.
msy··on Lavabit founder turned over the private SSL keys as an 11 page printout
There's plenty of examples of governments forced to comply with open data/FOIA doing precisely this. You can definitely hack the legal system, you just need to understand it fully and properly first, which tends to be where people, particularly hackers with high opinions of their own abilities fall down.
msy··on Developing Dataflow-Like Programming Systems
Are there any links etc to systems or tools the author has worked on? I'm interested in the subject matter but usually I look for a book by someone with demonstrable domain expertise.
msy··on Show HN: A free collection of maps for every country in the world, in 11 sizes
The British Library did an amazing exhibition of maps over history with their role in politics and propaganda a while back. My favourite was a bit of middles ages bravado that was about 3x3m, with meticulous detail, showing one country having completely swallowed another, this was was sent to the king of that country as a warning. The book of the exhibition is still available, I highly recommend it. http://www.bl.uk/magnificentmaps/
msy··on SteamOS
Add in Netflix (or a competitor) integration and you've got the potential to put all 3 major consoles on the ropes in a few years. Given Halflife 2 launched steam my bet is HL3 will be used to launch this.
msy··on Computer program uses Twitter to 'map mood of nation'
As a human, out of curiosity I've previously tried to classify random tweets into emotions and failed, there just isn't enough context to make the judgements not arbitrary. In consequence I'm deeply suspicious of software that claims to be able to do so.
msy··on Don't Plug Your Phone into a Charger You Don't Own
I'd pay decent money for a small, neat little power-only USB passthrough/condom for peace of mind. Hotel clocks, planes, there's all sorts of places I'd like to charge my phone and every time it feels like a risk.
msy··on NoFlo Kickstarter, the hacker's perspective
The complexity and spagetti will just end up inside those nodes rather than between them, the same discipline required to refactor and rearchitect as requirements change will apply. This just seems like a visual wrapper on a much more functional programming / actor model style approach.
msy··on A Shiny Content Farm is Still a Content Farm
Most of those platforms don't demand to own the content you post on them, that's an important distinction.
msy··on How upgrading to Google Apps for Business killed my company's email for 6 hours
I've been using Rackspace mail for a few years now, flawless service and shockingly good customer support - helpful, competent people available instantly, cannot recommend enough. Given our email accounts our the skeleton keys of our digital lives relying on a free service, or even a paid service where support is something the company sees as a numbers game seems madness.

My only gripe is the lack of support for two-factor authentication, apparently this is under development currently.

msy··on DevDocs
I would love an interface like this for MDN's JS documentation.
