mslagh··on Show HN: Dangle – Family Task Management and Reward Service
Awesome work, team. Great to see this on here!
mslagh··on Give HN: 3 character .net domains
sure, just email me (profile)
mslagh··on Give HN: 3 character .net domains
It costs anywhere from $8-15/year to renew a domain depending on the tld, so it's pretty expensive to sit on them. I thought this would be a good way to put them to use within the hn community before I set them free to the crazies of the domain registrant world.
mslagh··on Give HN: 3 character .net domains
Most were part of a bulk buy on ebay. Others are remnants of years of domain buying and selling.
mslagh··on Offer HN: Will Work For Karma
Definitely.
mslagh··on Who wants to develop remix.com?
I apologize if this is not the right forum for this request, but Hackers are desperately needed. The domain industry sucks and remix.com should be a cool web app.

I’m in a position to engage in a joint venture, sell or lease this domain. The term remix receives more than 100 million monthly searches (35MM U.S.), and the domain is adequately backlinked that it displays on the first page of google results. I wanted to develop this, but my life is going in a different direction. I’d prefer a hands-off equity stake position with the right team because I think the name has exceptional potential.

Send me an email (either from my profile or on remix.com) to let me know we can work together. Ludacris used to actually own this name as well, I guess it didn’t work out for him either ☺ http://www.dnforum.com/f17/ludacris-selling-his-domain-remix...

mslagh··on Lease Premium Domain Names Traffic for Local Businesses
This really is a phenomenal way to monetize generic domains. The best part is that the leases are so short so that I could still sell my domains if the right end-user happened to come along (a rare thing these days).

"Root Orange is a game-changer for domainers. At Root Orange, we agree the best way to monetize a generic domain name is often to sell it to an end-user. Businesses that offer the product or service described by the generic domain name can almost always get more value from the domain than the owner of a parked or developed website that depends on direct navigation traffic and PPC revenue.

Sales to strategic end-users have long been the dream of domain owners and investors, but there have always been two catches:

1) Once your name is sold, the recurring revenue stream is gone.

2) If your name does not describe a product or service offered by a major, national company the potential sale price is not very attractive.

Root Orange solves both problems. We lease every domain to multiple end-users, each in unique metropolitan markets. Instead of one sale, we can generate over 200 leases for each name in the U.S. alone."

mslagh··on Microsoft strikes back: introduces docs for facebook
Don't see any reason to switch from google. "You need a SharePoint server and license in order to collaborate, and either: You need to pay license fees for an on-premise version of Office 2010 or You need to pay an as-yet-unspecified subscription fee." http://industry.bnet.com/technology/10002712/the-hidden-cost...
mslagh··on Ask HN: Any other crossfit lovers? We need a better app
Tyler, thanks for reaching out. I'll email soon. I'm wondering how intensive the location-based functionality would be to incorporate, because beyond that, I'm finding As RX'd to be really useful.
mslagh··on The new math of community
Sorry, as a new poster, what's proper protocol? Should I change the author's title for HN?
mslagh··on Ask HN: What do you think of the domain industry right now?
I think that's absolutely compelling, as long as it isn't anything like Sedo. The only things Sedo does well are (comparatively) low fees and customer service (which is excellent and necessary in the industry). Other than that, the interface is impossible to work with, and the internal messaging system leaves much to be desired. The only success I've had in selling domains to startups in the past were funded, so this would facilitate more revenue for the domainer, as cash flow from parking domains has really taken a hit over the past couple of years. I'm confident this idea has a fighting chance of being a success - I've seen other companies with large portfolios of domains go down the leasing route, but there's no transparent, market normalizer that lets the individual user post and lease domains. My one concern would be that this is a nice niche business (and one that could be fulfilling at that), you'd have to do your own research to see if the idea is big enough to warrant your own time and energy.
mslagh··on Ask HN: What's your biggest gripe with craigslist and/or ebay?
They don't, and I agree that it is flawed. But perhaps flawed is too strong of a word, and it's just that ebay auctions don't tend to mimic real-life auctions (and maybe there is a reason for the discrete time limits, ie sellers need to know exactly when items are ending; buyers are often time limited sometimes as well: 7 days often seems like an eternity anyways). Many of the up-and-coming penny auction sites include this feature, as it is much more necessary to their business model.
mslagh··on Books all kids should read at school (a list)
Great post. I've loved following 100redesigns too..
mslagh··on Ask HN: What do you think of the domain industry right now?
I have definitely considered it. This option probably makes the most sense for startups who don't have a lot of capital up front.. turning as many fixed costs into marginal costs early on in the business.
mslagh··on Apps for the Army: the military offers cash for app dev
Hooah!
mslagh··on Ask HN: What do you think of the domain industry right now?
Very sound advice. +1
mslagh··on Ask HN: What do you think of the domain industry right now?
100M+ global monthly search volume according to google. I've owned the com, us and org variants for a little while now. I think names like this will always command a high dollar, but aggregators and traffic arbiters like google, fb, twitter, hunch, digg are only going to increase the value of solid landing pages rather than the one-word domains that "corner a market." Of course it's highly dependent on the search algorithm formula -- domainheads are always coming up with google conspiracy theories :)
mslagh··on Apps for the Army: the military offers cash for app dev
Only open to Army civilians and soldiers, but this signals that the Army will welcome applications that improve the lives of soldiers in the near future.
mslagh··on Has anyone worked with the military or have military experience?
Haha. Sounds like you are the prototype. I'm working with former Army officers who had an awful time finding the right gear before Ranger School, deployments, etc around the big bases that are in remote geographic areas (Benning, Bragg). I knew the military community was large, but it was incredible to find out how clustered it is.
