mshockwave··on Porth, It's Like Forth but in Python
I don’t agree at all. Unless the author enforces it with license or some legal means and/or the LLVM version author was rude, this is how competition works in a good way. And to be fair, performance is not the only reason people pick between different implementations. A good example being CPython: there are plenty of JIT-enabled python in the wild but I don’t see people turn away from CPython
mshockwave··on How to think about compiling
I feel like many people missed one important point before they complained about how hard it is to write a compiler: start simple! You don’t have to start with mature languages like Java even you really want just support a subset of it. Same for codegen targets: try some simpler (pseudo) architectures/bytecode before even thinking about the real ones like JVM bytecode or native assembly
mshockwave··on How to JIT – An Introduction
maybe put 2013 in the title?
mshockwave··on Consider working on genomics
Is there any open source projects on genomics that I can start looking into as a hobby rather than jumping right into a full time position in this field?
mshockwave··on Mold linker may switch to a source-available license
> Apple has a significant investment in ld64 and probably doesn't want to abandon it.

Yep, Facebook and a few people in Google are actually the primary contributors to LLD's MachO support

mshockwave··on AT&T Syntax versus Intel Syntax (2001)
Similar thing also happens on 68k: Motorola syntax v.s. "MIT" syntax which is probably only used by GNU toolchain
mshockwave··on Bike: Innovative Rich Text Editing
This is a neat solution! Though I wonder if this can carry over to terminal environments
mshockwave··on C2Rust Transpiler
It’s actually funded by DARPA so basically everything in this project is public available.
mshockwave··on Nerfstudio: A collaboration friendly studio for NeRFs
exactly, can somebody ELI5 what is NeRF in this context?
mshockwave··on MacOS 10.15: Slow by Design (2020)
I think you should add 2020 in the title
mshockwave··on Building the Future of the Command Line
> Whats wrong with requiring a GPU?

I'm glad that you never encountered this before and I sincerely wish you never will: getting on call 3am in the morning due to server outage and you couldn't diagnose remotely. You rushed to the server room, which was only 50F btw, connected to the machine and brought up a rescue shell. Oh, did I tell you that none of them has integrated GPU?

See, it's not about the time you sit in front of your M1 MacBook and have a nice cup of tea -- it's about the situation where everything goes south and your tools and infrastructures can still have your back

mshockwave··on Suspected counterfeit components found in ejection seat after fatal F-16 crash
Before reading the article I was guessing the seat failed to ignite. But it was actually worse -- the seat was ejected but the chute didn't open, what an awful way to die.
mshockwave··on X-Plane 12 Early Access
I play DCS and I'm using T.16000M FCS + HOTAS (you don't really need paddles unless you're flying helicopter). I'm primarily flying F-16 and these gears are really good. I only have minor complains so far, for example there is only one D-pad on the stick and the grip is too big for my tiny hand to sit on the palmrests
mshockwave··on Rolls Royce Ends Boom Supersonic Partnership
It's not like GE and P&W are bad choices given the fact that they made some of the best military jet engines in this world. While comparing fighter jet with large aircraft might not be fair, I think B-1B Lancer will be a good analogy in this case (similar size, 4-engine layout, and twice the takeoff weight). And B-1B Lancer use engines from GE.
mshockwave··on C++ Concurrency Model on x86 for Dummies (2020)
nobody says you should always use reference instead of pointer in C++
mshockwave··on Godot 3.5
same here, the hug of death from HN I guess
mshockwave··on Lockheed Martin Prepar 3D
I don't get it, Ghidra is one of best RE tools, what's the problem?
mshockwave··on Operation Gunman – how the Soviets bugged IBM typewriters (2015)
> doesn't even mention bitcoin once /s

that's exactly the reason makes it awesome

mshockwave··on Playstation confirms chain of 5 vulnerabilities on PS4/PS5
SIE is a subsidiary of Sony but they're quite different. Even inside SIE the division that makes PlayStation is quite unique compared to other (first-party) game studios.
mshockwave··on How did people get to Britain 950k years ago?
I can't remember where I read this but I think you need at least 16 people to have a genomically sustainable population
mshockwave··on Quick Tip: Enable Touch ID for Sudo (2020)
I tried this a couple of years ago but it would be reset after every system upgrades. Is it still a case now?
mshockwave··on Diving into GCC Internals
> actively resisted allowing it to be modularized

and this is exactly the place where LLVM shines.

mshockwave··on New GitHub Profile Badges Beta
yeah this achievement is really immature, maybe same as the one who came up with this in GH :-P
mshockwave··on Apple Unveils M2
Despite the exciting news and I'll definitely upgrade my intel MBP to either M1 or M2 in the future, I doubt my personal workflow will change: Linux for development, Mac for productivity and maybe some (lightweight) development, Windows for gaming and gaming only. While Apple probably wants to steal existing user base from Windows, on productivity uses maybe, I don't think they're planning to drag people from Linux on development workloads.
mshockwave··on OpuntiaOS – an operating system targeting x86, ARMv7, Aarch64
finished reading the README but still have no clue how does this compare with other operating systems, or what are the killer features.
mshockwave··on Hack a satellite
Correct, IMHO these competitions are mostly setup in search of talented people and (maybe) catch the attention of general public on certain security fields
mshockwave··on Imagen, a text-to-image diffusion model
IIRC appspot.com is used by App Engine, one of the earliest SaaS platforms provided by Google.
mshockwave··on Including “And. And. And. And. And.” in a Google doc causes it to crash
on my side it didn't trigger the crash right away but if you refresh the page, a popup with "Something went wrong" will show up
mshockwave··on Including “And. And. And. And. And.” in a Google doc causes it to crash
> Should I report it somewhere?

Please do. You can open an issue (Bugzilla has been deprecated) on LLVM's github repo: https://github.com/llvm/llvm-project
