mshockwave··on Advanced x86: Virtualization with Intel VT-x
The links to PDF and ODP materials should be swapped
mshockwave··on Why Host in Kosovo?
Taiwan also hosts one of the few GCP datacenters in (east) Asia
mshockwave··on I have written a JVM in Rust
> writing a full OS in Java

IMAO, Android kind of achieve that...kind of. They write lots of OS logics in Java (or Kotlin) but mixing lots of system services written in native code at the same time, interconnected by the famous (or infamous?) Bind IPC.

mshockwave··on Why was the F-117 retired so quickly?
Highly recommend reading "Skunk Works: A Personal Memoir of My Years at Lockheed", written by the father of F117, Ben Rich. It detailed the history of creating NightHawk as well as other famous aircrafts like U-2 and BlackBird(A-12 / SR-71). Too bad the book couldn't cover F-22 Raptor as it hasn't been declassified at the time of writing (1996)
mshockwave··on “How is your thesis going?” Students’ perspectives on mental health and stress
getting phd at 27 is suuuper early. Granted, friends might start to work at 23 or 25-ish but we're talking about a doctoral degree, which makes a visible difference on job hunting in the field of computer science I'm in.
mshockwave··on Goldman is looking for a way out of its partnership with Apple
I thought it's the opposite: MasterCard has much wider global coverage compared to American Express.
mshockwave··on Goldman is looking for a way out of its partnership with Apple
that's my impression too. The reward is mediocre to say the least, but it's super convenient by optimizing the most common path: payment in a single click on the dashboard and real-time activity feed. And the killer feature: autofill on web pages with Safari.
mshockwave··on Jellyfin: Free software media system
Jellyfin is my jam, it just works. Its administration interface is intuitive, pretty solid, personally I think the dashboard looks good aesthetically, and most importantly it’s open source so if anything is broken I can just fix it myself. If anyone is interested in feel free to check out Swiftfin (https://github.com/jellyfin/Swiftfin) a native iOS client
mshockwave··on Logistics challenges of saving Air India’s diverted 777 in Russia
Similar things happened on military aircraft too: I remember ~2yrs ago a gigantic C-17 mistaken a tiny airport near San Fransisco as an AF base located not far away.
mshockwave··on TransparentHMD: Revealing the HMD User’s Face to Bystanders (2017) [pdf]
another follow-up, slightly tangent question: how does F-35's helmet do that without blocking all the lights?
mshockwave··on The tale of "-mrtd" in GCC and Clang
I didn’t know they put pre-VCS GCC on their own server. Thanks for pointing out!
mshockwave··on New Playground: Integer.exposed
> I feel like when you play with byte order you want to see how the bits change for a given number, rather than the number for the same bits.

+1, as someone who is exclusive working on a big endian architecture this will be really helpful.

related but slightly tangent: I hope there is a button for toggling 2's complement.

mshockwave··on ACM Software System Award Given to seL4 Microkernel
Airbus is also using either seL4 or some other microkernels in aerospace applications.
mshockwave··on Driving Compilers
From https://llvm.org : "a collection of modular and reusable compiler and toolchain technologies"
mshockwave··on Driving Compilers
clang packs all three things into a single executable. GCC however will always call out to external executables for compiler (cc1) and assembler (as)
mshockwave··on Driving Compilers
Glad that the concept of compiler driver gets more exposures. "The `gcc` program itself is actually not a compiler...but a compiler driver" [1] is one of my favorite things to tell newbie compiler engineers.

[1]: Clang, on the other hand, is not the case (at least the modern one). The `clang` program is a compiler driver and compiler AND assembler for majority of the platforms.

mshockwave··on Yurt Calculator
I wonder if there is any military application of using Yurts-alike tents, considering them being more resilient to extreme weather yet easy to set up and take down.
mshockwave··on The Windows 11 Trash Party
Mind to elaborate a little more?
mshockwave··on Microsoft's Software Is Malware
you still can invoke msbuild manually. If I really need to test on Windows, most of the time it's a CMake project so I just generate build files for VSCode, go back to whatever editor I like and `cmake --build .` to launch the build job.
mshockwave··on A CPU is a compiler
same...I feel weird because I learned AT&T syntax since day 1. And even with that, I think Intel syntax is just another way of writing, period. No hard feeling at all. Don't quite understand why the author is so...pissed.
mshockwave··on Show HN: Yaksha Programming Language
Are you planning to add alternative backends in addition to transpiling to C99?
mshockwave··on Word-as-image for semantic typography
the Chinese examples are legit. Though the example on the far right (冲浪) is a word comprises of two characters, which means surfing only when the word is read as a whole.

Also noted that that is simplified Chinese, used by mainland China, that is, well, simpler than traditional Chinese used in Taiwan and maybe Hong Kong. For instance, 冲浪 is written as 衝浪 in traditional Chinese, which is more complicated and I'm wondering how they handle it.

mshockwave··on Open Airport Map
For some reason it couldn't find LAX's full designation, KLAX. Also, just realized SNA, an tiny local airport, has a whopping 5000+ft runway, longer than some major ones like SFO or BOS.
mshockwave··on Apple Entertainment Services are slow or down
Both App Stores, Apple Music, Podcasts...wow these are all high-value services
mshockwave··on One does not simply 'pip install'
The author mentioned venv in the article. Also I believe the parent comment is talking about the difficulties of choosing between different dependencies management solutions, venv among them, rather than the lack of (a good) one
mshockwave··on U.S. FAA closes some airspace in Montana for Defense Department activities
> getting a precise location would be difficult.

(slightly tangent) and even more difficult to lock on the target. This is actually one of the primary purposes of stealth technologies: enemy can clearly see you on their radar but just can't instruct a SAM or air-to-air missile to shoot you down

mshockwave··on WW2 Bomb Explodes in England
No I believe it's a common approach. Without the fuse dynamites are inert and you can burn it without exploding it, since they are actually flammable. Of course, lots of steps can go wrong like incomplete removal of the fuse.
mshockwave··on Flare Programming Language
I was just going to say the website looks really '90s
mshockwave··on Why Finland Selected the F-35A (2021)
And also the cost: F-35 sacrifices some stealth technologies (in comparison with F-22) in favor of a lower cost
mshockwave··on FYI: LLVM-project repo has exceeded GitHub upload size limit (2022)
There are some workarounds to shrink the size. I think the most noticeable ones being only build certain backends (-DLLVM_TARGETS_TO_BUILD="X86;..."), built as shared libraries (-DBUILD_SHARED_LIBS=ON) and split (DWARF) debug info for debug builds (-DLLVM_USE_SPLIT_DWARF=ON). Plus, usually I just build the tools I need instead of firing `ninja` or `ninja all`
