I have side projects in Rust, Javascript, C and many other languages. I've worked back end, front end, embedded, built massive web-scale distributed systems and one off prototypes.
Yes I'm short apple (as of August 2025 $206 average price)
When I used to live with my parents I specifically bought the physical Orange box so I could play portal and half life without having to download anything over the horribly slow and metered satellite connection.
Steam immediately forced a multi-day process of downloading and updating steam, then downloading and updating portal, before I was able to launch the game and have it crash from broken GMA950 drivers.
I buy maybe one game a year these days but I always buy it from GOG pretty much because of that experience.
That's a completely ridiculous definition of fascism and again, if you pick that most Americans would be fascist and consider it a good thing.
At this point it doesn't look like allowing anything other than net emigration is practical. You just can't trust the people involved to do anything else.
Instead all you have is spamy garbage full of ads and addictive social media cybernetics.
Think for five minutes about your abstraction and create meaningful types and config languages, don't just hack it with a hashmap.
Frankly I think it's fine. PR and marketing people have put a lot of effort into making people anxious about this when the reality is that socializing in a late stage imperial society tends to be a net loss for most people and they are actually better off alone.
The reality is that the technology is incidental. People are grabbing whatever they can to solve their problems and the technology just happens to be there. It's certainly better than the last solution (Instagram and friends.)
Except having what are essentially televisions in their pocket. That's the one win they get.
You might say it's a PR problem, others might say it's an actual problem. Either way it's going away now.
