mschireson··on Why I am leaving the best job I ever had
Yes, but he lives in NY so will have less travel.
mschireson··on Why I am leaving the best job I ever had
Theoretically I am a career manager but I feel more like a hybrid between that and an entrepreneur. I have done mostly management roles but more on the technical side, some individual contributor stints, and joined my last two companies quite early (8 employees and 27).
mschireson··on Why I am leaving the best job I ever had
I am indeed incredibly lucky to be able to make this choice.
mschireson··on Why I am leaving the best job I ever had
Congrats mate!
mschireson··on Why I am leaving the best job I ever had
Thanks. The more I thought about the choice the easier it became.
mschireson··on A fun math puzzle whose solution will surprise you
yes, each mathematician guesses incorrectly as often as they guess correctly. but that is not the same as saying that there is a 50% chance the group "wins" on any given round. remember with the possibility of passing the number of guesses on a round need not be uniform...

Hope that helps get you on the right track,

Very good! Now how about the hard version?
mschireson··on Ask HN: What are your thoughts about consulting agencies (CS major)?
I think these places are not first choice but depending where you are from may be a way to stay in the country. Where are you graduating?
mschireson··on Don't use MongoDB
Besides office hours in California NY and London we also have user groups in many cities http://www.10gen.com/user-groups and have (one day, very inexpensive) developer conferences frequently (next two in Dallas and Seattle).
mschireson··on Interesting math puzzle - harder than it sounds
It depends which diagonal. I'll explain in more detail later but don't want to completely spoil it :)

Stay tuned!

mschireson··on Interesting math puzzle - harder than it sounds
Its the best I've found.

Another way of thinking about the visualization is to make a model of the surface that can fold up to form it. The shortest path (which will be a diagonal if not a straight line) on any of those is the answer.

mschireson··on Interesting math puzzle - harder than it sounds
No, it does not. And while someone suggested that it could drop to the floor without injury, you could consider it to be afraid to do so :)
mschireson··on Interesting math puzzle - harder than it sounds
Lol. That's out of the box thinking!
mschireson··on Interesting math puzzle - harder than it sounds
This one got my kids a bit interested but not enough to get them really engaged in trying to solve it. Anyone have fun puzzles for middle-schoolers?
mschireson··on Interesting math puzzle - harder than it sounds
Nicely done. Take the diagonal!
mschireson··on Oracle does NoSQL
Yes, the big question is whether it will be open source. I have no insight into that, waiting to see along with everyone else.
mschireson··on Oracle does NoSQL
Curious to see what this demographic thinks. Will they have an impact in the market?
mschireson··on Startup stock options explained
If I'm lucky, some day you'll use it against me :)
mschireson··on Poll: What database does your company use?
Quite interesting to me how the HN demographic has changed. Oracle usage is up dramatically from a year ago, and I don't think it's because Oracle has grown :)
mschireson··on A data modeling challenge: relational vs document oriented for modeling orders
Thanks. Didn't expect as much interest as I got - would definitely have worked longer on the post if I thought thousands of people would have read it :)

My view is not that relational is bad, but that the world needs an alternative.

mschireson··on A data modeling challenge: relational vs document oriented for modeling orders
Agree on using both point in time values and FKs.

Agree also that there are plenty of second and third order apps where RDBMS is great.

The non-DB comic is funny.

mschireson··on An even better way to get a job working on mongodb
The puzzle was fun, and I do expect to hire someone from out of that process, but if you have the time and the background, this is even better.
mschireson··on Want a job working on mongoDB? Your first online interview is in this post
Is it hacker news that's potentially damaging or my blog? If its my blog I'm kinda flattered :)

(Would rather be "potentially damaging" than useless)

Simpler to do the arithmetic modulo a prime just smaller than 2^64 if you ignore the case where n is very close to 2^64 (which should be fine in real life). In case you leave your code will be easier to maintain than if you bring Galois Fields into it.

I was kinda expecting the bigint solution though.

curious what algorithm you use to determine that. i personally think my blog has useful content. maybe because i talked about a job it looks like just a job board?
