mscasts··on Did Google Cripple Edge’s YouTube Performance?
Well Youtube performance used to suck under Firefox as well to the point that I felt that running youtube without the addon "Youtube Classic" in firefox was unbearable.

I still run Youtube Classic.

mscasts··on Microsoft Edge
Not really, I can choose between Chromium and Firefox. It's like choosing between an iPhone and Android. Sure you technically could use an older phone but that is becoming an issue for everyday life, at least where I live.

Before there was Firefox, IE, Chrome and Opera which all had their own rendering engines.

mscasts··on Microsoft Edge
Google has won the browser battle (for now) and it sucks for all of us. Competition is a good thing.
mscasts··on Windows Server 2019 Includes OpenSSH
Yeah sure, but this was before Powershell was available afaik.
mscasts··on Windows Server 2019 Includes OpenSSH
That is really something, before as a dev coming from linux when I first was about to login on a Windows Server I didn't understand how to do it since it were no SSH.

Administrating the server via a GUI always felt backwards somehow. Why waste CPU cycles on rendering a UI when the CLI is so great (on linux)?

mscasts··on Show HN: JSON.equals in Java to compare two JSON's
Ok cool, thanks for the explanation!
mscasts··on Open Location Code
This is really cool, but not really that much easier than coordinates. The good thing about coordinates is that you can choose the kind of granularity you want.

But kudos to Google for doing this.

mscasts··on Show HN: JSON.equals in Java to compare two JSON's
Can't one just simply check if the strings are equal?
mscasts··on Choose Firefox Now, or Later You Won't Get a Choice (2014)
Yeah right, Mozilla didn't even fight for him one second.

> “We didn’t act like you’d expect Mozilla to act,” wrote Mozilla Executive Chairwoman Mitchell Baker in a blog post. “We didn’t move fast enough to engage with people once the controversy started. We’re sorry.”

mscasts··on Front-End Microservices
What is the benefits of doing this? Micro-service evangelists never care to explain that.

They link to another blog article that say:

> The monolithic approach doesn’t work for larger web apps

> Having a monolithic approach to a large front-end app becomes unwieldly.

But in my opinion breaking up the frontend (or backend for that matter) they way that they say you should is much more "unwieldly".

Seriously, is there any benefits at all? Job security?

mscasts··on Choose Firefox Now, or Later You Won't Get a Choice (2014)
I used to donate to Mozilla, but ever since they fired Brendan I haven't been able to look at them the same way.

I use Firefox daily, but actually don't really care if they die because it's their own fault.

mscasts··on Facebook's seized files published by MPs
Holy cow, I feel very lucky I dont have facebook now :O
mscasts··on Go 2, here we come
> For those that aren't familiar, byebug lets you put the command "byebug" anywhere in your code that opens an in context REPL. It's enormously helpful for hard to figure out bugs.

Isn't that what a normal debugger does? Or am I simply just living in lala-land because of C#.NET/Visual Studios terrific debugging experience?

I remember php and the hell that was xdebug. It was much easier and more efficient to simply to a `var_dump` whenever you needed to debug.

mscasts··on [dead]
I think this is content that does not really fit on HN.

From an european perspective I can understand why you want to lower immigration since all you have to do is look at Germany, Sweden, France etc and anyone can see that it doesn't work well.

mscasts··on Ask HN: Why not more hiring of junior devs, then on-the-job-training?
In my country you will have to switch if you want any significant increase in salary. At least at the overwhelming majority of firms.

Loyalty goes both ways and unfortunately most companies doesn't seem to understand that where I am from.

mscasts··on Why Aren't There C Conferences?
The very first C compiler wasn't written in C though.
mscasts··on Why Aren't There C Conferences?
The php conference was free, but held in that part of town that made you lose all dignity and sense of pride.
mscasts··on Want to Recruit Better Engineers? Open Source Your Code
I don't know about you people, but I don't give a rats ass if the company I work for open source their code or not. I care what benefits i receive and mostly the salary and the possibility to work remotely.

Also it is a positive thing if what I do is fun and/or meaningful.

mscasts··on Insomnia: 'No link' between sleepless nights and early death
If sleep wasn't very, very important our bodies wouldn't prefer 7-9 hours of sleep each day.

I have a hard time believing long term sleep deprivation doesn't lead to an early death. If lack of sleep makes it harder to stay slim, increases chances of dementia and diabetes well then these issues probably help shorten the life expectancy?

I have a hard time believing this report.

mscasts··on My App Is Dead in the Water
Of course that makes a lot of sense. Thank you for clearing that up for me.
mscasts··on My App Is Dead in the Water
What are you refering to? HN guidelines?

I was just trying to be funny as well as point out the obvious reason why Apple won't care about him :)

mscasts··on My App Is Dead in the Water
Have you tried to be wealthy and/or an important app developer?
mscasts··on Preparations companies are making for Brexit
Honestly, who cares? Even if my country suffered economically from leaving the EU I would still vote for leaving.

I don't think the UK will suffer economically, at least not more than many countries that still is in the union but just have a bad economy in general.

mscasts··on Spectre.css – A Lightweight, Responsive and Modern CSS Framework
Looks good, I'll use it!
mscasts··on Google has sacked dozens over sexual harassment since 2016
> Sure, but if you're terminated for cause you shouldn't receive anything.

I disagree. It all depends on what the cause is. Regarding sexual harassment which today means any woman can accuse you of that and no questions is asked and you'll get sacked is not a valid reason for not getting any money imo.

mscasts··on Chrome will soon ad-block an entire website if it shows abusive ads
I don't like it. Honestly, I don't want Google to be the gatekeeper for what an abusive ad is or isn't.
mscasts··on Google has sacked dozens over sexual harassment since 2016
If you created Android which runs on the overwhelming majority of phones today, you probably should get a very good exit package deal.

Imagine how much wealth Android has generated for Google.

mscasts··on Ditching Windows: 2 Weeks with Ubuntu Linux on the Dell XPS 13
AFAIK, Slackware doesn't even have a package manager, does it?

The only experience I had with Slackware was just that, I installed it, found out there is no package manager and installed Ubuntu.

I have a hard time understanding why someone would use Slackware when there is distros that is literally better at every aspect.

mscasts··on Amazon is helping ICE track, detain and deport immigrants, report says
> Unfortunately, our website is currently unavailable in most European countries.

But given the title, I assume "help" is providing tech resources just like to anyone else?

mscasts··on State considered harmful: A proposal for a stateless laptop (2015)
Can't this kinda be achieved with Windows and Windows Server with AD? You login to the server and it downloads the content for the session and when you logout the content is removed from the local computer?

I remember when in school they used to have this, which made logins take forever.
