mscasts··on Want to Stop Fake News? Pay for the Real Thing
Yes I do understand that. I don't really see any real difference between the two though.
mscasts··on Want to Stop Fake News? Pay for the Real Thing
Why would I pay for a media that humiliates me, writes biased articles and tells me that I am a bad person because my political views differ from theirs?

I am actually kind of glad that the media landscape is changing, because they way it has been has been terrifying. I'm not american, so I can't speak for new york times but the layoffs in the shit-media that was buzzfeed and others like it is just good news.

I'd rather see a world without a news media than with them being the only option. But I do pay, for alt-media.

mscasts··on Microsoft’s Azure DevOps: An Unsatisfying Adventure
1. I don't use Google products if there is any other choice.

2. I think Azure is better overall than AWS. It's way easier to grasp the different features, while I haven't used Azure Devops, I've had little issues with the rest.

mscasts··on TDD is boring
> There is nothing wrong with TDD.

But there is. For example how the focus on testing takes away the focus on the architecture. Tests shouldn't be the priority.

mscasts··on A Stroke Turned a 63-Year-Old into a Rap Legend
My browser can't even play that and whats me to download a .mov file. No ty.
mscasts··on A Stroke Turned a 63-Year-Old into a Rap Legend
Interesting legend, tried to search for him on youtube and other places but nothing showed up. I'm not saying this man can't rap, but how can you call that being a legend if there isn't a single recording?

Nowhere in the article is there a link or an embed to an example of his legendary rap.

mscasts··on Airbnb and security camera disclosure
Really, I haven't heard anything about that?
mscasts··on Airbnb and security camera disclosure
I live in the EU (Sweden) and here it's definately legal to record a video of someone in your own apartment. With or without their consent.
mscasts··on Airbnb and security camera disclosure
Well in Sweden (which is where I live), at least one case I know of where I man video taped him having sex with women in his apartment didn't get any repercussions for it since it's perfectly legal to film someone in your own home without them knowing about it.

It is illegal however, to share that film without consent or video tape outside the apartment. You can video tape with your camera moving around in a public space without permission, but same here you cannot share it online or something like that.

I agree with these rulings and I think it should indeed be legal to video tape inside your own home. It's very illogical if that wasn't the case.

mscasts··on New logo
Looks good imo. Not much else to say about it. Good job!
mscasts··on Show HN: Shiny.js simulates reflections on the web for mobile devices
It's more like "blinking" on my device. I have a samsung s9 and I am willing to test any update if you hit me up later.
mscasts··on Airbnb and security camera disclosure
That is kind of creepy indeed. In my country you are allowed to video tape inside your own home and I assume that right extends even if you rent it out temporarily.

I guess far from every host does this, I would even say it's probably very rare. But maybe there is a reason to stay in a hotel after all ;)

mscasts··on Show HN: Shiny.js simulates reflections on the web for mobile devices
It isn't working well on Firefox for Android (at least not for me). It is very laggy, so much so that I would say that there is no shiny effect at all.
mscasts··on Article 13 is almost finished and will change the internet as we know it
It won't happen any time soon I'm afraid. I want to leave the eu because I don't believe in big centralized countries making decisions for hundreds of millions of people. I like decentralization.

Just look on all the big countries of the world, they all kind of suck. There is simply no way for ordinary citizens to have any effect on EU because of it's size alone. Almost all my countries MEPs voted no to Article 13 but it still got passed.

I don't want Germany and France to control Sweden (which is the country I'm from).

mscasts··on Article 13 is almost finished and will change the internet as we know it
I hope my country leaves the European union, soon.
mscasts··on Bungie departs from Activision
I hope they can start to make good games again. Game companies seems too politically correct to cater to gamers though.
mscasts··on Roadmap to becoming a web developer in 2019
I have, but I have always used normal html+css?
mscasts··on So Long, Macbook. Hello Again, Linux
Well, I thought about that while ordering. Sent a mail to System76 which was the only company I knew about besides Dells XPS (that wasn't available in my country at the time). They didn't have chargers that fit with the european sockets and their system was still more expensive than the other options anyway. Plus, if something goes wrong, there is no real support available in my country. I would have to ship it half around the world for any support.

Even on hardware that are supposed to be supported, I have many times run into problems because of it only supports x distro or something like that. Sure it often is an pretty easy fix, but you still have to dig into to config files, read forums on the internet to get help.

mscasts··on So Long, Macbook. Hello Again, Linux
I installed (ubuntu) Linux recently on my new HP Spectre x360. Unfortunately, there was some issues still. My webcam didn't work at all. The touchpad was bad in comparison to Windows drivers and the graphics drivers sucked.

But overall it works much better today than like ~5 years ago. Got back to Windows and I am unsure if I will ever run linux on the desktop full time even if it is a distant dream and have been for long.

The only issue is that there is still a lot of issues on many laptops. Most desktops work great and it is easier to switch hardware parts.

On laptops, it seems that it's still a dice throw. I hope that changes in the future. Unfortunately, it is the chicken and the egg problem here and will most likely continue. Linux is a lot better than 5 years ago, but so is Windows and MacOS as well even if they both have stuff that sucks.

I used to believe that [current year] was the year of linux on desktop, but I no longer believe that mostly because of what makes linux so great, all the choices.

mscasts··on Roadmap to becoming a web developer in 2019
I am too young to have ever used tables for anything else than table data. I am almost 30 years old today and have worked as a dev my whole career.

We sure have made some progress!

mscasts··on Ask HN: Is web development still a viable career choice?
Ok yeah, I guess that is probably a common story. I have though and I would assume that is also common :)
mscasts··on Ask HN: Is web development still a viable career choice?
I am a web developer and I get contacted a few times a week on LinkedIn about switching jobs. I assure you, if you are a web developer you will not go job less no matter where you live unless you're doing something very wrong.
mscasts··on Game dev: Linux users were only 0.1% of sales but 20% of crashes and tickets
Well yeah, it is of course much better today I believe. But I wouldn't be surprised if you still have to spend hours in trying to configure stuff if you have the wrong hardware.

Misunderstand me right, it's still mostly on laptops I have experienced issues. On a stationary computer you just get a performance drop, at least for most graphics cards.

I think it's great that it has improved so much and I hope it will continue to improve so that sometime in the future I can return to the promised land.

mscasts··on Game dev: Linux users were only 0.1% of sales but 20% of crashes and tickets
I have seen this claim many times, but wonder about it's validity.

It's easy to think that a truly cross platform game that has Linux as a first class citizen would make a lot of stir. But I used to play Heroes of Newerth years ago when Linux support were way worse than today. I also read HN then.

I never saw any special treatment for that even tho I loved the game and it worked really, really good on linux.

Searching on algolia just proves my point: https://hn.algolia.com/?query=heroes%20of%20newerth&sort=byP...

I simply do not buy the story that just because you release it on Linux, have good linux support etc it will spread like wildfire.

S2Games, which made HoN, made a superior MOBA imo but none of my friends play it anymore. They play Dota2 tho. I think the reality of the situation is that no one cares about if a game run on linux or not except extreme nerds that would never use Windows and go through the daily struggle that is desktop Linux.

I used to be one of them, nowadays I only use Windows.

mscasts··on Netflix's Bow to Saudi Censors Comes at a Cost to Free Speech
It is real easy. When they want to limit your product with censorship and other evil things, do not do business there. Perhaps they will come around when their people starts screaming for these kind of services.

If all companies just adhere to their rules, well the population will probably never require the change that they should because it will be good enough so the dangerous path of complaining is not worth it.

mscasts··on Ask HN: Did you delete your Facebook account in 2018?
No I deleted mine in 2017
mscasts··on Did Google Cripple Edge’s YouTube Performance?
They also are still blocking pretty much all browsers except Chrome from Google Hangouts.
mscasts··on Bye Bye Mongo, Hello Postgres
Some issues with your statements:

1. Well, they probably own the car though which is a better parable. You don't need to rent your car, you can simply purchase it just as you can purchase servers. People build their own garages.

4. So you should only used already written software? Sometimes it is just faster and better to write it yourself. You get less dependencies, you know how the whole thing works etc.

5. Why not? That is exactly what one should do.

mscasts··on Bye Bye Mongo, Hello Postgres
I worked on a large site that used MongoDB. We hundreds of thousands of rows in one specific collection that were used as a log. We couldn't even query it without the whole database crashing.

We moved that specific collection to MySQL, no problem and there was virtually no change in the data structure. Both were of course indexed.

mscasts··on Did Google Cripple Edge’s YouTube Performance?
Both but mainly playback.
